Re: [RE-wrenches] Irradiance data

2010-03-06 Thread David Buckner
Drew,

Aside from getting the weather data for weather-adjusted performance calcs, you
might also note to your client that the excessive snowfall has skewed
performance even further. One of our projects just outside of NYC had a
pyranometer that would be clear of snow the day after a storm and therefore
showing say 400 or 500 watts/sq meter irradiance at the site. Meanwhile there
was a foot of snow on the array! I suppose we should move the pyranometer down
to the module height so that it doesn't clear of snow any sooner than the
modules.

It might also be comforting to point out that a 10 degree pitched system in
Newark NJ could be down 100% in January and that's still only 5% for the year.
If it starts snowing in July, then we have more problems than lost PV
production.

Is anyone aware of a resource for finding local historical irradiance data?
We've had a cloudy winter around the DC Metro area and I would like to quantify
how far down we are from the average for new customers concerned with
production.

Thanks in advance,

Drew

Aloha Folks:
NREL had a book list order form years ago (which you could download
online), and you could check any of the books you wanted, and they would send
them to you for free! This irradiance data book was one of the free books I
got at the time, plus others on BIPV and other topics. I actually ordered
multiple sets of these for friends and co-workers.
I don't know if that deal is still around. The same irradiance data has
been published in Ed Mazaria's 'Passive Solar Energy Book.' From the 70s.

David - Thanks! This is great as an average for comparison. Any thoughts on
where I could get data specifically from 2009 or the last couple of months?

Re: [RE-wrenches] Irradiance data

2010-03-03 Thread David Brearley
You might check in with the monitoring companies you work with to see if
they can pull up the data from one of your sites with an irradiance meter.
You might already have this in an admin view. If not, maybe someone on this
list does.

NREL or Sandia may also collect this data on an ongoing basis. While I¹m not
sure who you¹d contact, there are extensive resources listed at the end of
the Production Modeling article in SolarPro. That issue will post online
this week start mailing very soon.

I also suspect 3TIER has the data you want (http://www.3tier.com/en/), but
I¹m not sure they¹d give it away. Since you¹re not planning on making money
with the data, maybe they¹ll share. Doesn¹t hurt to ask...
