Re: [RE-wrenches] Plaques

2024-04-01 Thread Sam Haraldson via RE-wrenches
Lou,

It was mentioned among the myriad responses you got to this question but
it's definitely worth trying the custom placards from PVLabels.com.

https://www.pvlabels.com/custom-placards/

You upload a simple graphic through their website and they'll ship them out
within a day or two. We only use this service for when we need a directory
placard (e.g. a site map) which are 4x6 or 5x7 and cost around $30 to $45
per placard.

For textual-only custom labels we own a Hellermann-Tyton thermal label
printer that we bought six or seven years ago and has served us well.
Those together with standard PV label stickers are all we need for the work
we do.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Plaques

2024-03-31 Thread Chris Schaefer via RE-wrenches
After years of having a local vendor do my engraving and using a couple of
different thermal printers, I settled on a Brady BMP 51 label printer. All
kinds of colors and UV protective labels. The machine remembers your labels
in a file and has battery backup. Definitely best to keep the labels out of
the sun when possible, but even so they are holding up very well. I've had
the unit for almost 10 years now. I don't recall the cost but it wasn't a
deal breaker for me.

Hellermann Tyton seems to be big into labels. They also sell a thermal
printer which is branded as theirs, but it can also be found at
www.creativesafetysupply.com, branded as a Labeltac 4.0, at half the price
of Hellerman. $699 at present vs. the $1,500 Hellerman. That's where I
bought mine about 10 years ago. I used their MS Word label software to
customize templates. They also sell blank label rolls including white on
red reflective tape, UV resistant.

I only used Hellerman generic write-on labels once. They were terrible,
indelible pen bleached out within a year.

required. I recommend Tony :::

We send him a PDF doct and the size/font requirements. within a couple days
I receive a perfect red placard with white lettering, 3M sticky on the

Re: [RE-wrenches] Plaques

2024-03-30 Thread Ray Walters via RE-wrenches
I once got a trophy company to engrave some plaques and it was stupid
expensive. ($50/ plaque)  Then I started using PV Labels.com, and their
pricing is quite reasonable (under $10/ plaque).  Turn around time has
always been quick too.  I'd have to be printing a lot of plaques for
doing it in house to pencil out. I'm not sure if it ever would,
considering that you still have to pay yourself or someone else to
operate the engraver, and the blank plaques probably cost a bit too.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Plaques

2024-03-30 Thread William Miller via RE-wrenches
Lou:

I tried this with my little, cheap shapeoko CNC router. It can be done but
it kind of became more of a hobby than I wanted. Your bed has to be dead
nuts flat, much more so than through-cutting parts (like interlock plates,
for example). Holding the material tight to the bed really requires a
vacuum bed. You need the software and a spare computer you don’t mind
getting dusty. I spoiled three for every one successfully completed. Maybe
I gave up too soon. Maybe I had the wrong approach.

I suppose you-tube might give you some insight. Have you checked there?
Sorry my experience is so limited.

PV Labels is so darn quick and good and reasonable I could not justify
carrying on with making my own.

I use a thermal printer with labels that are UV rated. (duralabel). The
problem with engraved is if you make a mistake and have to have it
redone.  The labels from my printer are best placed out of the sun
although UV rated.  I do see fading after 8 or 10 years.
