Re: [RE-wrenches] Reliable 48 to 24 V DC to DC reducer

2018-09-17 Thread Ray
As many other folks have noted, the El Cid pumps are very low flow rate,
so it can be very hard to get air out of the system. These air pockets
can build up and keep the fluid from flowing at all in some loops.  No
flow, no heat.  Besides being half the power draw , the ECM pumps are
variable speed so their power draw can be reduced even further.  At
initial start up they can be run at full power (roughly 40 watts) and
then once the air is purged from the system, they can be throttled back
to even lower power draw.  I have not heard of either company doing
anything DC.  I've found that when involving the other trades (plumbers,
house electricians, well service, etc) that the closer it is to being
how they normally do it, the better.  Using these ECM drive pumps for
instance, is just a matter of specing the pump.  It plumbs and wires in
just like a regular model.

However, I would consider skipping the El cid pumps and going to the

Re: [RE-wrenches] Reliable 48 to 24 V DC to DC reducer

2018-09-17 Thread John Blittersdorf
I went a more expensive route but never regretted it as I want a stable
power supply for my SunFrost and 12V DC Pumps. I have an Iota AC to 12v DC
charger/power supply which works with or without batteries. I have kept a
12V battery attached as it gives me 2nd level redundancy when my main bank
hits low battery cutoff the DC equipment starts with a full battery.
My 48V Outback is on all the time anyway and the small AC to DC loss is
insignificant it my system and also when I monitor the outback system with
Optics, I see all my loads, including the 12V DC Loads as one measurement.
I have been using this system for about 10 years with no problems. Most of
the time the Iota is just coasting but if I need surge capacity, it can
handle 30 amps. Also I left my 12V system in tack so I have some DC
lights and anything else I want to plug into 12v (ie, charging a car
battery, 12V laptop power cord) it is available. My 2 L16 batteries on the
system are vurtually dead right now, probably no water in them, but the
surface charge works with the Iota and no negative affects.

There are certainly many options I didn't know
about. You guys are an incredible resource!

On the LED drivers, do you bypass the transformer
and rectifier and wire in directly to the DC leads inside the box?

Thanks,.

While not as inexpensive as David's solution, I have used Mean Well
converters with success. This manufacturer supplied the DC-DC step-down
converters used by Wattsun for their tracker drives, so there's a pretty
long history with them. Check out
