Re: [RE-wrenches] Ten K Solar
1. Too much reflected light onto the array in the old Carrizo Solar caused the acidic acid in modules' encapsulant to turn brown, reducing production to the point that the whole field was scrapped after I don't know how many years of service. But I would wonder if similar problems might occur with these...especially in very hot locations in the summer. Otherwise, I think that a smaller ratio of reflected light has been a neglected and cheap route for increasing array output ("energy density"). 2. Microinverters operate with MPPT from relatively low voltage modules, so that is not especially new. Tho did I read MPPT at the cell level? That would be new. Re: [RE-wrenches] Ten K Solar
This is possible because they have cell-level MPPT. I'd guess that even when the sun is perpendicular to the module you'd have a [tiny] bit of extra current from diffuse light reflected onto the module, and you'd see more substantial gains from reflection if the sun can "see" the reflector and PV. I don't think this would be enough to outperform a 2-axis tracker, but it's an interesting approach to maximizing kWh/kW. Re: [RE-wrenches] Ten K Solar
Chris: The issue is not so much the voltage as the amperage. Utility power has amperage capabilities that far exceed the rating of the usual over current protection devices. In a fault, the current is temporarily very high, opens the OCPD and the problem is resolved. With PV, the power is current limited and we want to draw 100% of the amperage available, so OCPD must be sized smaller than the available ampacity of the string, otherwise the OCPD would trip every sunny day. This is the crux of this very serious problem, and the reason PV wiring should aspire to the highest standards. There is no breaker that will protect your wiring. (OCPD is required and is useful in preventing parallel strings from back-feeding each other in a fault condition.) Re: [RE-wrenches] Ten K Solar
tenKsolar has contacted me several times recently about their product. They have a slightly interesting concept with the cross woven cell wiring but otherwise I'm not sold. Not only am I not sold but I'd stay away with a 10' pole. At least for me, the last thing I need is to be experimenting with new unproven technology. The one thing that has worked very well over the years is a good quality standard crystalline silicon module. It feels like the industry is just now getting some traction in reducing the balance of system and soft costs and that's what I'm focusing on. -August *From:* re-wrenches-boun...@lists.re-wrenches.org [mailto: re-wrenches-boun...@lists.re-wrenches.org] *On Behalf Of *Chris Mason *Sent:* Monday, October 22, 2012 3:24 PM *To:* glenn.b...@glbcc.com; RE-wrenches *Subject:* Re: [RE-wrenches] Ten K Solar Do we really buy that a reflector panel will produce more power than just laying the solar pv at the right tilt? ___ List sponsored by Home Power magazine List Address: RE-wrenches@lists.re-wrenches.org Options & settings: http://lists.re-wrenches.org/options.cgi/re-wrenches-re-wrenches.org List-Archive: http://lists.re-wrenches.org/pipermail/re-wrenches-re-wrenches.org List rules & etiquette: www.re-wrenches.org/etiquette.htm Check out participant bios: www.members.re-wrenches.org
