Re: [RE-wrenches] mod waveform LED dimmer

2018-09-05 Thread jay
HI Ray,

Yea thats a good assumption based on CFL’s.

But LED are different.

What happens is that the LEDs will dim a small amount and then ( there are 4
LED lights in a light fixture) one will turn off for a short while ( few
seconds) then it’ll come back on and another will go off and on and on it goes.

I’ve see this on other systems from a generator with poor quality.

Its pretty odd and totally random.

The options for this customer are going back to incandescent, or maybe there is
a LED/Dimmer combo out there that works. And as to trying out others, yea
thought of that but they are expensive and could be a big rabbit hole.

thanks
jay

If a regular dimmer doesn't work, which because of the sharp edges I
would not expect to work very well,

you could try a variac.

Sorry I can't help with specific models, but my guess is that most
dimmers will work.  They will probably buzz annoyingly due to the mod
sine, and probably die a relatively earlier death from the extra heat.
That being said they could last several years, and reduce total load.
Let us know what you find out.  I'd probably just grab a couple from the
local supply and play with them.  I do quite a bit of Mad scientist work
here.
