Re: [RE-wrenches] module level control for offgrid

2019-02-16 Thread Dave Angelini Offgrid Solar
Jerry,

Why do you have to meet rapid shutdown on an existing installation please?

Down here in the central Sierra we have been uninsurable for fire really
since we built the home. Many of my clients self-insure offgrid. We do the
best we can for installation and fire hardening and then just cross the
fingers. I am interested in this subject because it will get looked at
more. Since I mostly always use ground mounted solar I have not been as
concerned. You guys really had it bad. I can't imagine all the fires we
have had here with those kinds of wind speeds.

Re: [RE-wrenches] module level control for offgrid

2019-02-16 Thread Matt Partymiller
I tried to design a system with TS4-Os and an Outback CC. They were not
compatible at that time (about a year ago) due to conflict between
optimizer function and Outback MPPT. The system would get stuck off MPPT.
I assume that is still the case but cannot confirm. Tigo support kept
saying they had resolved the issue (while blaming Outback) but never did.
We finally just removed the units.

Re: [RE-wrenches] module level control for offgrid

2019-02-16 Thread Jerry Shafer
Wrenches
Regarding the RSD both here and coming soon to a town near you, I found
that the Tigo TS4-R-S is completely compliant for the OutBack system
including module level monitoring, however the F model also from Tigo is
not at all. I attempted to contact other manufactures but had no success,
if they are hard to get or find that does not make me feel warm and fuzzy
down the road.
So for all of us living and building the off grid dream and wanting to be
2017 compliant when it happens we have a solution.
I have had conversations with the insurance groups and for us in the 2017
fire storm on Sonoma and Napa Counties here in California, there has been
questions about paying out if the system is either not permitted or
modified in such a manor that is unsafe.

I do not think Tigo or IMO have a presence on Wrenches and I know this is

I hope this helps.

Below is a link to an OutBack webinar concerning module level shutdown.
Date: Wednesday January 9, 2019
Time: 10:00 AM PST – 10:30 AM PST

http://www.outbackpower.com/resources/obt-training/webinars

Class Description:
As of January 1, 2019, 27 states have adopted the 2017 edition of the NEC and
with it Article 690.12(B)(2) addresses PV array safety, for firefighters.
California’s adoption starts in 2020. The biggest change in the 2017 edition is
the requirement for inside the array rapid shut down. For many installers, the
most effective way to meet the requirement is with a module-level device to
limit voltage of conductors to less than 80V, 30 seconds after shutdown
initiation. In this webinar, we will discuss solutions that meet this
requirement that work with OutBack Power products.

Re: [RE-wrenches] module level control for offgrid

2019-02-02 Thread Dan Fink
Jay; Off grid we have worked through some strange requirements over the
last few years, and in most it had a lot had to do with how electrical
inspectors interpreted NECthey are as puzzled as we are. There were
AHJs calling for giant remote-trip DC breakers on battery banks to comply
with rapid shutdown (I think that fire went out when it was pointed out
that meant all backup generators needed to be integrated into rapid
shutdown too, a no-go) And AHJs who said that because the conduit from a
ground mount array went 4 feet up the outside of a building to the first
disconnect before penetrating the building, that meant the PV array was "on
the building." And local solar companies frantically pounding in 250.47(D)
aux grounding electrodes below every PV array, even though that's a recipe
for disaster.

I'd boil it down to keeping good lines of communication open between PV
installers and the AHJs and being able to discuss frankly what exactly the
problem some of these more mysterious code items are trying to solve.

HI Dan and Kienan,

Yea I understand some of the work arounds, but its not always possible to work
around things. At some point its going to be in a building or on the roof etc.

So sounds like from the crickets that things are not quite ready yet. Better
slow and ready than fast and not.

Midnight solar has an RSS and Tigo has an RS4 they all need to have the
rapid shut down sw turn off the inverter to stop the DC current then the
module level Switches can shut off the module

Re: [RE-wrenches] module level control for offgrid

2019-02-02 Thread Dan Fink
A very common way around rapid shutdown for off-grid systems especially
with ground or pole mounts is using a "power shed" for the BOS
components.if it is not inhabited / uninhabitable then rapid shutdown
is not needed per NEC 2017.

Re: [RE-wrenches] module level control for offgrid

2019-02-02 Thread Kienan Maxfield
Jay,

I'm interested in this too, but I don't have any good answers (I was hoping
that someone else would have responded by now). I know that this doesn't answer
the question... but my only comment is to use a pole mount whenever possible.
Rapid shutdown only applies to systems on a building or where the PV system
conductors penetrate beyond 3' into a building before reaching the PV system
disconnect. For a pole mount, as long as your equipment is on the outside wall,
you can easily get to the PV system disconnect within 3' of wire length from
the building penetration so no rapid shutdown of any kind is required. The
battery system is considered a separate system in the 2017 code and there is no
requirement for rapid shutdown of any kind in that system.

Thanks,
Kienan
