[RE-wrenches] roof types
A bit off of the solar subject. Any recommendations for a new roof that would be an acceptable means for collecting drinking water? Re: [RE-wrenches] roof types
The only choice is metal, or maybe tile. Use a water dump arrangement to get the first flow to catch the dirt off the roof that is in the first flow. You're on an island so salt is a consideration also, as you know that gets everywhere. It's a lot easier to put panels on a metal roof than on tile, at least from my point of view. I can send u more info if you want. What's your budget look like? Obviously standing seam metal is superior to everything else. 3tab asphalt is not only a petro product but its texture traps water and a lot never runs off to be collected. Wood shake too will absorb water and is a good place for microscopic moss & other thingies to grow. Treated wood leaches out its chemicals over the years and those go right into your storage tank. We built with SS metal then didn't have enough money left for the big 10k storage tank so for now the downspouts just water the grass. Have a plan B ready we learned. Re: [RE-wrenches] roof types
We used to always see Propanel steel roofs on rain cisterns. I used a galvanized corrugated steel roof for my own rain catch and never had a problem, although some people don't like it. Earthships used Propanel in the 90s but had them leak (less than 1:12 pitch) and then were using a EPDM roofing membrane with white painted on coatings (don't know what the coating was). We were always told not to use any asphalt based roofs (comp, or tar and gravel) Also I would imagine wood shingles are treated with nasty stuff, and wouldn't be a good choice either. As others said, standing seam would be optimal for rain catch and PV. Regardless, no one should plan to drink it without serious treatment. Most cisterns in New Mexico test positive for E Coli bacteria, when tested for real estate inspections. R. Re: [RE-wrenches] roof types
Has anyone mentioned EDPM rubber? A system we just finished for Acadia National Park's entire roof was EDPM and they collected all the rainwater through downspouts. There are EDPM rubber boots for penetrations and it was extremely tough and the color was white (great for reflected sunlight as well! Daryl DeJoy > What's your budget look like?
