Re: [RE-wrenches] GT inverter for SWWP turbine

The Skybox,
I only have one installed, AC-coupled with a Solaredge 5kw inverter, it's
been working fine for 9 mos, fingers crossed. But obviously I'm not using
many of its touted features. Probably I'm dodging a bullet for that reason.

Re: [RE-wrenches] GT inverter for SWWP turbine

2022-08-12 Thread Nick A Lucchese via RE-wrenches
Interesting timing on this Skybox subject. Over the last few weeks I’ve been
getting requests for help from a local individual that has been experiencing a
lot of problems with his integration of Skyboxes and a Fortress Evault. I am
too overwhelmed with my own work to jump right in but still trying to help him
out in a limited manner as I feel bad for his situation. Sounds like the two
main issues he’s experiencing are lack of success updating firmware in the
Skyboxes and related miscommunication with SOC between the components and the
charge being terminated once the batteries only reach 30% SOC.

Is it worth the effort of believing once a successful firmware update is
completed that the associated problems will be remedied or would those of you
experiencing Skybox problems recommend swapping out the inverters before any
additional labor expenses are wasted? Seems like he is willing to go for the
latter but I’d rather not doom a decent product to e-waste if it’s not
necessary. I always avoided the Skybox myself due to their high idle
consumption so other than an afternoon training I have no experience with this
particular Outback offering.

Enjoy your weekend, Nick

Same disastrous experience here as well with the Skyboxes.

We installed three – I now own them as I replaced them at my expense with
another competing product.

Worse solar product I dealt with in the last 15 years.

Re: [RE-wrenches] GT inverter

2011-11-21 Thread Brian Teitelbaum
Jay,

If you use the Aurora 6000, it has two separate MPPT channels, and each channel
has dual input lugs, so you could have up to four PV strings without any needed
fusing (two strings per channel).

On the 6000, the max input power per channel is 4kW, so you can't just put two
strings of 10 modules on one channel (20 x 225W = 4500W), but you could use
four strings, with, say 16 modules on one channel (two strings of 8 for 3600W )
and 14 modules on the other channel (two strings of 7 for 3150W ). The Aurora
inverters have an adjustable input voltage range that will go all the way down
to about 90VDC and still power-point track, so strings of 7 are no problem,
even with regular 60-cell modules. There is some loss of efficiency at the
lower voltages, but it's minor.

30 of the Sanyo 225's might be a bit high for a 6kW inverter however, so you
may want to use two smaller Aurora inverters instead of a single 6000. You will
need to analyze how much clipping you might get at the location, and see if the
lost wattage is worth the extra cost of using two inverters. Personally, I
don't think that an array at 6750W on a 6kw inverter will really see all that
much clipping, unless it's in a cold climate. I doubt that the extra cost of
using two smaller inverters would be justified.

But what is on the market for a TL fused disco?

Hi Brian,

I just found on Midnite's site a brand new set of combiners that do the job,
very cool, can be configured in multiple ways!

For the size I was looking at it would need 3 strings, ( 5+ amps per string, 15
 series fused rating)

So as I understand it, I've got to install fusing, which means that I'd need 2
of those expensive discos.

So usual that the manufactures are not providing the equipment to do the
install.

I have to say, given the confusion for this hook up, I might opt for the tried
and true sma.

Thanks all for your imput.

Right! Double-break terminology confusion on my part...I meant use the
four-pole switch for two separate circuits (and break the positive and
negative of each) to take advantage of the two MPPTs if need be.

The Square D switches would work (as would others, I'm sure, but I knew
how to find this file). And you don't need to break each pole twice:

Schneider/Square D does make a fusible, 4-pole, 30 A, 600 Vdc disco,

Re: [RE-wrenches] GT inverter

2011-11-21 Thread mac Lewis
Jay,

I'm not sure as far as external disconnects. In the handful that we have
installed, we have been able to use the integrated disconnects. Could you
use a standard DC double-pole double-throw and run the + and - through each
pole?

I like this choice also.

But what is on the market for a TL fused disco?

I would see if the Aurora 6000 would be a good fit. I believe it will
string but it may clip depending on tilt, orientation and anticipated temps.
