Glenn, these pre-set wrenches are still pretty pricey. Are there some you’d
recommend?

I get the torque wrench out occasionally to check, especially if using some new
hardware with different specs. However on a daily basis, I generally do it by
feel. I have come across an amazing number of over and under torqued
connections over the years, though, so it really is an issue for all of us to
watch out for. Even though I'm not toting a torque wrench up on the roof, I
still hand tighten the final half turn on all connections, to make sure they
are right. I don't run a big crew anymore, but I could see the advantage in
having pre-programmed settings for the new people.

2016-11-30 Thread Chris Mason
I absolutely use a torque wrench on big electrical equipment, when
tightening 2/0 to 500MCM terminals. I carry an electronic 3/8 torque wrench
in the truck for that. When I do generators and large switchgear I regard
it as essential to get the correct torque settings and use them.
I use a set of three Filo torque screwdriver handles covering 1.5 to 4.5 Nm
with two sets of drivers, use them for all inverter connections.
I'll generally use the torque screwdriver to check a new panel, go over all
the breaker terminals once we have finished.

M18 lithium batteries deliver full power until they are almost fully
discharged. I doubt it’s an issue.

As I understand it, there are 4 buttons on the drill, each can be programmed to
one of 10 torque levels through the app. And yes the torque levels are 1 – 10,
not torque values. For example, tighten an L-foot to a scrap piece of rail at
each torque increment, measuring after with a torque wrench, til you have the
values of each increment. Then program the drill buttons to your most often
spec’ed torques, and you’re done. Just press one of the four buttons on the
drill to get the required torque. The values are set in the drill even with
battery removed.

I thought the idea of being to preset torque RPM settings from the app was
good, my reasoning being have one impact set (by the boss, behind password) for
installing racking lags, another set more delicately for mounting equipment,
etc, but watched one of their videos and the torque is not calibrated to
in-lbs, it's like a range of 1-4, and the app lets you do a 2-1/2 for example.
The actual torque is up to you to figure out.so you still need calibrated

Not enough to make me switch brands (that would be super expensive)and I'm

Re: [RE-wrenches] Milwaukee M18 one key tools

2016-11-29 Thread Ray Walters
I believe that the reason they don't list actual torque values for drill
settings is that they can vary quite a bit depending on the SOC of the
battery, temperature, drill age, etc.
If its a critical torque application, I would not depend on the drill
settings, but instead do a final tightening with a calibrated torque wrench.
BTW, I have several of the M18 tools (not the programmable) and they've
been pretty good. Except the time in Haiti that I had to take the drill
apart to clean the dust out of the switch.

Its all electronic now, no simple switches these days.

Yeah, the Flexvolt system even has 120V tools. Unless you have some serious
cutting or boring tasks, I can’t imagine needing these in my line of work.
I’ve found the Milwaukee 12V series is surprisingly good for many tasks and
super lightweight (nice on a roof). They even make a capable 12V hammer
drill, which is hard to find.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Milwaukee M18 one key tools

2016-11-28 Thread Jason Szumlanski
Seems like an unnecessary gimmick to me. That said, I switched to Milwaukee
M12 for light tasks and M18 for heavy use and I’m very happy. They even
make combo M12/M18 multi-charger. The M12 are super light and the M18 are
very good. They also have a better selection for oddball tools. Perhaps the
best feature is that I’ve been buying knock-off batteries online for cut
rate prices with excellent results.

I thought the idea of being to preset torque RPM settings from the app was
good, my reasoning being have one impact set (by the boss, behind password)
for installing racking lags, another set more delicately for mounting
equipment, etc, but watched one of their videos and the torque is not
calibrated to in-lbs, it's like a range of 1-4, and the app lets you do a
2-1/2 for example. The actual torque is up to you to figure out.so you
still need calibrated hand torque wrenches.
Not enough to make me switch brands (that would be super expensive)and
I'm not sure I like the idea of adding complicated electronics to a really
simple, reliable tool.

Pardon my ignorance but what would be the purpose of a smart phone app for a
cordless drill? It's not like we'd be using it hands-free anyway. You can
imagine being up on a ladder, drilling with one hand and adjusting at the
same time with the smart phone? Sounds like a bad mismatch.
