We are also hearing very good reports of longevity with Kestrel's too.

For instance, there is one (110) in Hawaii that has been running with a
Classic without any trouble for about 3 years now.

But somebody just posted a Sunforce message on the AWEA small-wind list that

2012-04-04 Thread Larry Crutcher, Starlight Solar Power Systems
Hi Chris,

If by "Y'all" you mean me, since that was my comment ;-), I do think the Air X
and Breeze are a good product overall. I said "fairly well" as we have seen our
share of failures, some right out of the box. But for the volume we have sold
and serviced over the last 8 years, I still like them. Many of them are located
on the shores of the Sea of Cortez which has a very high salinity. 303's and
403's still come in for service and even though we can't get parts, I open them
up. The problems vary; slip rings, brushes and bearings being the most common
failures, control boards after that. For comparison, what other small turbine
has the same performance/price point?

40 and Air Breeze. The 30 is like the old X land, the 40 is like the old Breeze
Land and the Breeze is like the old Breeze Marine. The Breeze is the only
marine model available. Confusing enough? The 40 and Breeze have a limited

Hi Dick,

Kestrel is going through certification at this time. This is good news,
as this

will help them enter the US market with some established credibility.

It has the potential to be a good turbine. And with the Eveready battery
company

behind them, they should have the capital needed to be a solid company.

Last I knew, they do not have a US distributor. Too bad because I want
to test one here!

FYI- I had the opportunity to dismantle and reassemble one in a course I
taught in 2010.

It's built like that proverbial outhouse.

that climbing a tower or lowering it is nervous making enough that after a
few years, even if the owners understand electronics, they tend to neglect
the systems to death. Big wind can have a dedicated and trained staff that
small wind can't afford. That's why I prefer solar.

I am a dealer for Ampair wind turbines. The 100 watt is low output, about 50 to
75 ah/day but extremely quiet and durable (survives hurricanes). I have been
competing in the marine market with the now AirBreeze for 15 years. Or take a
look at the 600 for more output. All Ampair's are marine grade. Contact me off
line for a price if your interested.

The turbine spinning has no relationship to actual power into the battery bank.
If you can't get it into the air a ways don't bother at all, just add
more solar or a larger battery bank.
They might spin at 15' but they accomplish absolutely nothing.

Re: [RE-wrenches] small wind generators

2012-04-03 Thread Roy Butler

Hi Drake,

The Air 403/ Air-X/ Air Breeze/ whatever it's name is now, is fairly
dependable.
In most wind regimes it's the equivalent of a 10 or 20 watt solar
module but
seems to work just fine. FYI- it's ~ 200 watts or so.

It's not the quietest thing though, being a fairly high rpm turbine.

But the Sunforce 600 is not a 600. The rotor diameter tells the
truth, making it
somewhere around a 200 - 250 watt machine. Perhaps they have the
bugs worked
out but when they first came out, there were many reliability and
performance issues.

What's the application for this?

  Hello Wrenches,

Are the new Air 403 wind machines more reliable than in times

I'm also looking at a Sunforce 600 W machine.  How do these small
  turbines hold up these days?

  Thanks,
