42mb mesh is generally quite big, so that might be a problem. Usually we use
meshes that are around 1mb. What viewer version are you using, and also what
server? If you are using Taiga, then the problem is probably in your MySQL
connection. See this wiki page for more information:

[realXtend] rex server driving me insain

2010-09-03 Thread Icreative
Hi I am a 3d artist and i have great need to run my own open sim
server.
Now about a year ago under windows xp i ran the rex server and rex
viewer and even tough a lot of things dint work i could work with it
but now I run windows 7 and it has become impossible for me to
understand how to run a server.
Guys... I am a noob not a programmer nor a platform developer i am a
3D artist i need to run my own server. Could you maybe just maybe
clear things up so someone like me with a little reading can learn how
to do it ?

I tried to run the old server on windows 7 but thats nothing but
trouble the rex viewer does not work either, and yea sure i set it all
to admin mode and so on the usual stuff you do when it does not work
but that dint help a bit.

But as i noticed the rex viewer is now old and we have the new Naali
viewer and Taiga server ?? grid is now called gid ?? one connects to
an url ?? even trough a browser ?? you guys completely lost me this
time rex was a stand alone server and with a little help trough emails
to far away friends i got it online but this thing

If you could just tell me what where to download and what to install
where then ill be out of your hair and i can go on with my life
hahaha, that serious yes that serious whips smile of his face not
kidding I have great need to run this server mainly because this is
the only platform I know of where one can use 3D meshes instead of
uhum prims and has the ability to use more advanced lighting.

I can only ask you to help me because my desperate search on the net
for a forum or some media to help was hopeless.
So please help me out tell and me how i can run my own public server
on a windows 7 system

They both should work. I've used the old rex viewer on a win7 system
recently, no probs. A little more time has passed since ran the old
server, and don't actually remember doing that on win7, but I'm pretty
sure it works.

Perhaps if you can describe those probs somehow we can help.

And the new Naali viewer works against the old server too.

But as i noticed the rex viewer is now old and we have the new Naali

:) It is not actually that much different, perhaps not at all from your
standpoint - connecting is similar but you can now also use openid
accounts like google mail etc. so don't necessarily need the separate
rex accounts etc. (but those also work still).

One problem is that Taiga is always in grid mode, and (due to the Cable
Beach extensions) doesn't support the simple to-file saving with sqlite
which the old rex server was using by default, but requires the mysql db
engine to be installed to the system and creating some db tables etc.

I can only ask you to help me because my desperate search on the net

This is right place to ask, as AFAIK there are no active forums on the
web and this is the users mailing list. We are also on on irc during
work hours here in Finland, on #realxtend on freenode.

I think the simplest for you is to just use the old 0.5 server release,
as it doesn't require any configuration.

If there is some problem on your win7 that you can't resolve, the
instructions to get Taiga up are at
http://wiki.realxtend.org/index.php/Getting_Started_with_Taiga

The part about MySQL is here, not too complicated but some trouble,
http://wiki.realxtend.org/index.php/Getting_Started_with_Taiga#Setting_up_MySql

We are now working on also simpler server confs that don't need database
servers always etc. but that is the situation now.

You must assign materials or textures to it.

Collisions currently work only for the first submesh, the first material
index. There is a patch for the server that should fix it to work an
all, but there was some problem with it so it's not in current version
yet. Now you can make a collision model which is all in one part, and
set that as the collision model of your object. I don't know if Sketchup
can do that for you (i know Blender can).

Sketchup doesn't make automaticly a collission model, you need to make that
manualy

Re: [realXtend] rex server driving me insain

2010-09-03 Thread Jonne Nauha
I would give taiga a shot, its quite easy to setup with the config wizard,
and youll get some nice things like webdav inventory and avatars. Setting up
rex servers wont be the problem, but if you need a public server from your
home computer that might be a bit tricky. I think opensim basically wants
your machine to have the new ip, so if you are behind a router this is not
the case. I think you might be able to do some port forwarding, i have tried
this some months ago with Taiga 0.1 or something and didn't get everything
going. I think login went to the user server ok but the udp stuff just didnt
work, you can forward udp too of course but there was some feature that you
need to have on your router to make it work with opensim.

To sum it up: easy to put locals up and play around, harder to publish and
more so if you dont know how to access your router and do some magic. Let us
know how it goes.

P.S. People that know opensim better feel free to correct me, last time I
studied this your host machine needed the net ip to itself.

Re: [realXtend] rex server driving me insain

2010-09-03 Thread George van Zeeland
First of thank you very much for your fast reply MR Toni we greatly
appreciate it.
Art and realXtend yes I can't even begin to describe how many purposes
realXtend serves when it comes to 3D design and art its amazing !

I tried to run the 0.4 server not the 0.5 because i was not sure if it
came with the underwater world great place by the way
The problem i ran in to with win 7 is somewhat hard to explain for me
and now i left the office i cant give an error log but ill get back on
that.
For now i can describe the problem as good as i can.
After extracting and changing some permissions in win 7 the server
seemed to run just fine, apart from some terrain texture problems and
raw file uploads that dint work properly but after some testing and
changing preferences of the rex viewer I found I was only able to run
the viewer in window mode acceptable for now but that's not the real
problem.
After closing the viewer to see if every thing would get saved
properly i was not able to get back on the platform.
The login worked and I connected, authenticated all fine but wile
loading it timed out and froze the viewer.
After a little wile of changing permissions i found out that when I
ran it under vista compatible mode it worked again but the same
problem occurred after closing it again, now setting it to XP
compatible mode and it worked again untill I closed it same problem
and running out of different compatibility modes I could not get it to
work again.

TBH i have no clue of what the problem might be.

So this is what ill try next.
Ill download the 0.5 older server taking your advice :) and will try
to connect to it on the much more fancy viewer Naali.
Indeed because our purpose for realxtent now is to use it as an art
medium for just a small group architects and land developers and
artist who use the platform to simulate real pieces of land to see
what new buildings art or other object have for impact on the land.
Realxtend is unique when it comes to its ability to use advanced light
features and or the use of 3D meshes in a much faster way then
building a 3D enviroment in additional 3D programs and the ability to
walk around in it as an avatar really opens up new perspectives. We
use realxtend in combination with outodesk maya and 3Dmax to get the
most out of it.
It's an amazing medium platform !!

I will keep you posted on the progress, again thank you very much for your help.

Re: [realXtend] Re: I can't upload

2010-09-03 Thread George van Zeeland
Hello

There is a somewhat long way around that problem, I have tried to do
the same thing but dint work the way i wanted to.
If you are familiar with outodeks maya then an option might be to use
the Sketchup plugin for maya to import the models in to maya then use
the org exporter in maya to export your model to your hard drive for
uploading.
Maya will create the collision file as it will also create material
and mesh files.
You might need to reverse Face normals on your model in maya or your
object will turn invisible because Sketchup only creates planes
one-sided visual suvices

Maybe it helps you a bit.

Best regards George.

BTW besides the old way of uploading the mesh, material and texture
assets individually to the inventory, from where you can assign them to
objects that you create in-world, we've been now using full scene import
to RealXtend and I think there is a suitable exporter for Maya too:
http://realxtend.blogspot.com/2009/12/tutorial-to-import-scene-from-blender.html
is a tutorial where Blender is used, and there is an open source
exporter for Maya which should be compatible:
http://www.ogre3d.org/tikiwiki/Maya+Scene+Exporter

The thing there is that you get to upload meshes, materials and textures
in one go, and don't have to re-assign them manually in-world. They also
go to their right places if you export the whole scene, but it can also
be handy for even just individual objects (just need to export a scene
with that single object). Besides the opensim console implemented last
year and explained in that tutorial, there is now a work-in-progress gui
frontend to it in Naali.

For uploading individual meshes, I actually realized yesterday that we
could perhaps simple dragdrop of the mesh from your desktop to
in-world. Because the ogre .mesh file has the material ref inside it,
and the material refers to the textures it uses, Naali could inspect the
mesh and load all the assets and assign them correctly. Something to
investigate, perhaps next week.

 Best regards George.

cheers, and please be patient with us :)
