Re: [recoznet2] List issues
Trudy, This is the last time I will enter any of this discussion about K. Crook. All I want to say is that it appears that one very constructive member has been removed out of exasperation in the interests of a 'racist, ignorant, fool'. This morning I have opened my email to see nothing but discussion of our rules and how we are defending the right of this subversive (nobody interested in joining this group could carry on like K. Crook and yet act just like so many of the Government front bench - make outlandish statements, then when the heat comes on change the subject and finally talk loud, fast and meaningless - and be a sincere member of the group.) The woman is obviously a stooge from whatever where and quite frankly I think she has made fools of us. Is that enough personal abuse? The sooner we have a vote on who is invited to this group or we have the democratic right to remove people who 'divert us from our primary function' then this situation will continue. So far we have lost three weeks of constructive argument about mandatory sentencing and reconciliation because this stooge has diverted us. Noticeably, that was just when our specific attention was required. Get real. Trudy I am sorry to have to do this but I am exasperated. My computer is being clogged with a mass of stuff, and we have been through this before. But my greatest exasperation has been reserved for the amount of energy that is not being directed where it should. We, or more to the point, the Aboriginal Peoples we purport to assist cannot afford the luxury of us playing silly buggers with an obvious stooge. Ian. Re: [recoznet2] List issues
Thanks to Trudy for posting these rules. I can't speak for others on the list, but in my case, it isn't that I haven't seen these rules, but that I still can't see how Laurie has breached them. There's only one paragraph that would seem to apply to Laurie's situation: > -While all members have a dedicated aim of working for reconciliation > and justice for Aboriginal Australians, there are > bound to be many different viewpoints on how to attain these goals. > Members are encouraged to discuss and debate > vigorously but in language that respects the viewpoint and humanity of > others. Or, possibly, this comes into play: > -Any personal disagreements which go outside the boundaries outlined > above, should be kept private. If any member is > found to be harassing others on the list - even privately - that member > may be asked to leave the list. > For me, the problem is that there are in fact no boundaries explicitly stated. What is "language that respects the viewpoint and humanity of others"? That is so broad as to require interpretation, so the question is, what are the guidelines for interpretation. Specifically, in this case, is it or is it not ok on this list to call someone racist? Is it or is it not ok to call someone's ideas racist? Even more specifically: I have very little or no respect for Karen's viewpoint as she has presented it in her posting to this list. Am I not permitted to express my view of her viewpoint? It's a can of worms. And the very vagueness of the rule as it is constructed at present has, at least on me, a chilling effect. How am I to know when I've crossed a line when the line is not clearly drawn? So, to my mind, the question is not whether we have " . . . an open forum where there are no standards of discourse > or do you support a minimum standard of no personal attacks?" but rather, whether we have clearly defined standards of discourse, and if so, what are those standards, who defines them and who enforces them. > If there are standards, do you think they should apply to all members or > only those we don't like? I can't imagine that any person on this list would agree that standards should only apply to "those we don't like"! C'mon, Trudy, we may not be as "adult" as you'd like, but I think most of us behave like reasonable people! [recoznet2] List issues
-Attachments cannot be processed on the list so please remember: No attachments. -If subscribed to the Digest , please remember to change the subject line to what is being discussed when 'replying' to a message so that there are no 'Re: Recoznet2-L's' in the subject line, please also remember to delete irrelevant text copies when replying so the length of emails is shorter. Remember also to change the 'Reply to' for private communications. -While all members have a dedicated aim of working for reconciliation and justice for Aboriginal Australians, there are bound to be many different viewpoints on how to attain these goals. Members are encouraged to discuss and debate vigorously but in language that respects the viewpoint and humanity of others. -Any personal disagreements which go outside the boundaries outlined above, should be kept private. If any member is found to be harassing others on the list - even privately - that member may be asked to leave the list. -Members are encouraged to take part in discussions and debates. If you only feel comfortable contributing one line on an occasional basis then, please, do contribute that. We need ideas, education, information, inspiration as well as support for lobbying and other activist projects. -Although some discussion of off topic issues is encouraged please do not post items irrelevant to the purpose of the list. -Persistent offenders will will be removed from the list! It seems that some people have not seen the rules for some reason so I have posted them above. They are available on the Recoznet2 homepage and the URL for this page is posted at the bottom of every message on the list. For those who want to have a consensus on the issue - there are 101 members subscribed so a consensus would have to be from a majority of these - say 60%. Perhaps a consensus would first have to be reached on which question to ask. e.g. Do you want an open forum where there are no standards of discourse or do you support a minimum standard of no personal attacks? If there are standards, do you think they should apply to all members or only those we don't like? Do you support a seeking of consensus every time someone disagrees with the judgement of the listowner? How many would have to disagree for this to occur? One? Five? More?
