[recoznet2] Tent embassy raises international awareness of Indigenous issues

Tent embassy raises
international awareness of
Indigenous issues

Organisers of the temporary Aboriginal tent
embassy in inner Sydney say their protest has
raised international awareness of the problems
faced by Australia's Indigenous people.

The embassy has occupied Victoria Park at
Camperdown since the middle of July.

Residents staged a series of Corroborees during
the Olympics to highlight the call for Aboriginal
rights.

They are planning a closing ceremony this
weekend and embassy founder Isabelle Coe says
the protest has been a great success.

"It's certainly put the treatment of Aboriginal people
in the spotlight," she said.

"We've talked to international media, we've taken
them to Redfern, we've taken them to all other
parts but they've also had a chance to talk to other
people from all round the country right here in
Victoria Park.

[recoznet2] TENT EMBASSY PEACE CAMP: call for support

2000-09-23 Thread Suze

If you could please pass around the following to your networks it would be very muchly
appreciated

many thanx
Suze

ABORIGINAL TENT EMBASSY - VICTORIA PARK, SYDNEY

Call for support

Thanks to the work and support of many, the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Victoria Park
continues
to grow from strength to strength.

We're writing to invite you to participate in and support our struggle for
sovereignty, self
determination, healing and cultural nourishment. The Tent embassy is hosting the
Corroboree for
Sovereignty and the Sacred Fire Ceremony for Peace and Justice from the 14th of
September to the 1st
of October.

About the Corroborree: All are welcome. The Corroborree will involve traditional song
and dance,
indigenous and non indigenous performers and artists, and open public forums in
respect of past,
present, and potential paths forward. The Corroborree will take place on weekends
during daylight
for the duration of the Olympic Games. Film nights will be held on Thursday and Friday
nights.

For more details and a camp history: www.graffitihalloffame.com/tent_embassy

News from the Embassy: The Tent Embassy is ongoing and will reside in Victoria Park
for at least
another month. Our ongoing work includes raising money and equipment to allow elders
from
communities throughout to country to visit and stay.

Our current residential population is at least 100 people, with plenty more visiting
each day,
including media from here and overseas. A healthy camp needs resources. We are
requesting any
contributions you may be able to make: be it money, food, tents, firewood (native
timber only),
cooking utensils and blankets etc. etc. Receipts will be given for any donations, and
equipment can
be returned if need be. Please also forward any brochures etc. relating to your
activities for
distribution through the Embassy.

Feel free to forward this message to others. Thanks.

[recoznet2] Tent embassy to stay during Games

2000-08-23 Thread Trudy & Rod Bray

The Daily Telegraph
Tent embassy to stay during Games

  24aug00

AN ABORIGINAL tent embassy at Sydney's Victoria Park is likely to
remain for the
Olympic Games after South Sydney council brokered a peace deal with
the
  protesters.

Protest leader Isabelle Coe signed a deal with the council late
yesterday, which
enables her to stay at the inner-city site during the Games.

Under the deal, the tent embassy protesters will be required to not
allow any
vehicles in Victoria Park, Chippendale, and to use portable toilets.

As well, they must supervise the "sacred fire" at all times and accept
responsibility
for all people in the embassy.

The protesters have also agreed not to make noise between dusk and
dawn,
unless they first notify the council.

The council last week successfully sought a court injunction against
the
one-month-old embassy, which now has about 25 tents. Despite the court
move,
there was growing evidence that some councillors were likely to allow
the tent
embassy to remain beyond the Games by putting the issue to a vote.

Some councillors were concerned about the image of police dragging
away
Aboriginal protesters before the world's media.

[recoznet2] Tent Embassy gets reprieve

2000-08-22 Thread Trudy & Rod Bray

Looks like South Sydney Council did a Colin Dunkley!

Trudy
***

Tent Embassy gets reprieve
by Colonel Panic 1:43am Wed Aug 23 '00

The Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Victoria Park seems set to stay during
the Olympics following last-minute discussions with Police and South
Sydney Council prior to the midday injunction deadline today.

Embassy representatives met with Police and South Sydney Council to
discuss the Tent Embassy. Ten of the eleven demands made by Council were
negotiated away leaving only the issue of the number of tents in
Victoria Park outstanding. This issue will continue to be negotiated as
South Sydney Council becomes more willing to talk.

Numbers are vital for the Embassy's cause and security, ensuring that
enough people are on-site to handle any redneck rampages and ensure
maximum visibility for the campaign.

More cynical minds than I would point out that Council and Police may
have been reminded that an eviction would result in enormous publicity
for the Embassy, particularly considering the large numbers of foreign
and local media milling around today.

As always, things may change rapidly as the Olympics approach and
pressure from other politicians comes into play. Sign onto the Tent
Embassy Alert centre to be notified of any eviction as soon as it
happens through email or your mobile phone by clicking on the link
below.

Support is still needed. If you can, get down to the Embassy and camp
out. Otherwise drop in and show your support. Donations, monetary,
material and motivational, are always appreciated.

[recoznet2] Tent Embassy allegedly

2000-06-03 Thread Trudy & Rod Bray

ABC News
Sat, 3 Jun 2000 13:46 AEST
Tent Embassy allegedly
attacked

Representatives from the Aboriginal Tent
Embassy, outside Old Parliament House in
Canberra, allege they have been the target of
malicious crime.

Spokesman Michael Wever claims there have
been two seperate attacks on the embassy this
week, during which windows were smashed,
protest signs pulled down and sacred objects
removed.

The Australian Federal Police has confirmed
officers attended a disturbance at the embassy
last night, with only minor damage noted in their
records.

But Mr Wever says those residing at the tent
embassy fear for their saftey.

"Rocks are being thrown through the window and
things are being trashed around here," he said.

"The signs are being pulled down and there's
some anger out there in the community about
Aboriginal affairs right now."

[recoznet2] Tent Embassy

2000-03-15 Thread Trudy and Rod Bray

The Sydney Morning Herald (print edition)

Small 'fill in' article:

Tent Embassy

The Federal Government has
admitted it plans to close the
Aboriginal Tent Embassy after
years of attempts to remove
the structure that for many
has become a symbol of the
indigenous struggle. Mr
Michael Anderson, a founder
of the makeshift embassy,
set in 1972 to fight for
land rights, said the move to
close the heritage-listed site
would initiate a complete
"breakdown in race
relations" and "rip the guts
out of Aboriginal people".

Re: [recoznet2] Tent Embassy eviction!

1999-08-06 Thread David Sjoberg

What a classic! "The Authority" has always ignored , 'dispersed', removed
First peoples. I wonder if the NCA spokeswoman can see the irony of locating
herself in a "public health standpoint "in order to silence protest that is
requesting Govrnment to address many issues, not the least of which is
'health' . The "Authority" no doubt see the coming millenium celebrations
as just another reason to continue the denial of Indigenous reality in this
land . All the more reason to support/attend visible protest during a period
of international media scrutiny directed at the Olympics, Millenium
celebrations ect.

[recoznet2] Tent Embassy eviction!

1999-08-06 Thread Trudy and Rod Bray

The Daily Telegraph

  Aboriginal Tent Embassy eviction

  7aug99

ABORIGINAL protesters have been served an eviction notice to
dismantle their Tent Embassy outside Old Parliament House.

The National Capital Authority says Australian Federal Police will be
ordered to drag away the ramshackle buses and lean-tos that make
up the embassy if protesters do not.

The notice was served under the Trespass on Commonwealth Land
Ordinance. Protesters can be prosecuted and fined $550.

"We've been trying to hold discussions and negotiations with the
group of protesters to find a conciliatory solution," a spokeswoman
  for the NCA said.

"But they haven't responded to our requests, so we've served
them with a notice to either meet with us to discuss the removal of
the illegal structures and vehicles dumped there or to do it
  themselves.

"It's a serious problem for the Authority, both for our duty of care
and from a public health standpoint.

"We have the authority to request the AFP remove the structures if
  they don't comply."

Tent Embassy protest leader Ray Swan was unavailable for
  comment yesterday.

Since the arrests yesterday of two people at the protest on Parliament
Hill, ATSIC has now thrown its weight behind the protesters.

If any Recoznetters feel like expressing their feelings to the parties
concerned here are the email addresses of the culprits:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] (Margaret Reid called the police)

"The presiding officers' [Reid and Andrew] approval came hours after
they hosted a ceremony accepting a plaque commemorating the 1967
referendum
allowing the Federal Government to handle Aboriginal issues.
The plaque was presented by the chairwoman of the Council for Aboriginal
Reconciliation, Mrs Evelyn Scott, who was one of the group
which established the tent embassy." - SMH

The minister for assisting the Prime Minister for Reconciliation and the
person responsible for 'setting up' the group for arrest although he
denies knowing about it.
Philip Ruddock [no email published] fax(02) 6273 4144

And, of course, the person ultimately responsible: John Howard.
Paul suggests you try:
try <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Tent embassy protest flares again

Aboriginal tent embassy protesters today lit another fire on the
lawns outside New Parliament House after federal Reconciliation
Minister Philip Ruddock cancelled a meeting with the group.

The protesters moved back up the hill from Old Parliament
House this morning after Mr Ruddock cancelled the meeting,
saying it had become a publicity stunt.

They rejected an offer to meet Mr Ruddock in his office, saying
there would be no meeting in Parliament House.

"We want to meet with them on neutral ground," said embassy
spokesman Michael Anderson.

"We should not be forced into and we won't be forced into
meeting with their terms. We're not about compromising. If they
want us to compromise then they have to meet us halfway."

A spokesman for Mr Ruddock said the decision to scrap the
meeting was taken last Friday on the grounds that it was going to
become nothing more than a publicity event.

The protest began outside New Parliament House last week
following speculation the Government was considering moving
the tent embassy from its site opposite Old Parliament House.

The protesters agreed to move back down the hill last Friday after
senior Liberal Senator Bill Heffernan personally arranged for the
return of 211 ceremonial spears confiscated by police on
Wednesday night.

Police also extinguished a ceremonial fire lit on the lawns.

Senator Heffernan met embassy representatives today and was
handed a submission for Prime Minister John Howard. - AAP

[Fwd: [recoznet2] Tent embassy in world news]

1999-03-05 Thread Trudy and Rod Bray

There was something a week ago in the American press when Neville Bonner
died. In their inimical, English-challenged way the headline was rendered
as "Ex Aussie parliament member dies of cancer".

there's been a lot as well as new coverage of the debate over the constitutional
preamble [see CNN
http://www.cnn.com/WORLD/asiapcf/9902/12/BC-AUSTRALIA-ABORIGINALS.reut/index.html
- REUTERS
http://dailynews.yahoo.com/headlines/wl/story.html?s=v/nm/19990212/wl/aboriginals_1.html]
The BBC has yet to cover this but did cover Neville Bonner
[http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/world/asia%2Dpacific/newsid%5F273000/273655.stm]
as did the Washington Post
[http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/WAPO/19990205/V000256-020599-idx.html]
and
both AP and Reuters. I have generally found the BBC's man in sydney
odd to put
it mildly in what he considers news from australia. there's a large
slice of
appeal to a domestic english audience that doesn't like aussies! but
his
coverage of aboriginal issues hasn't been bad. coverage in the papers
that I see
is extremely erratic. haven't seen anything in the british press about
bonner,
the embassy or constitution. there is very very rarely anything of
interest in
the american press.
