Re: [RedDevils] Kenyon gone -David Gill to fit the bill
As with players, its not so much who leaves as who replaces them thats important. If Beckham, Veron Kenyon are being replaced with Djemba Djemba, Kleberson Gill then I'd have to say I'm a little concerned Bruce Maybe Gill can work the channels, leaving Djemba Djemba and Kleberson to run the middle of the park. [RedDevils] United confirm Kenyon departure
Manchester United have officially confirmed to the Stock Exchange that Peter Kenyon has left as the club's chief executive and named his successor as David Gill. It emerged on Monday that Kenyon was on his way to join Chelsea as part of Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich's rebuilding of the club. Although United released a general statement announcing the changes later on Monday night, as a publicly limited company they were obliged to make it official to the City. The board of Manchester United plc is delighted to announce the appointment of David Gill as its new chief executive with immediate effect, to replace Peter Kenyon who has resigned today, said the statement. Mr Kenyon will now go on 'garden leave' in accordance with the terms of his contract. Manchester United plc chairman Sir Roy Gardner said he was looking forward to a smooth transition during the change of the top man off the field. We would like to thank Peter for his significant contribution to the success of Manchester United on and off the pitch in the last six years, he said. David, as managing director, has also played a major role in that success, and we are delighted that his appointment will bring both experience and continuity to this position. [RedDevils] Gill appointment 'about succession'
New Manchester United chief executive David Gill is determined to dispel the impression that his appointment as Peter Kenyon's successor was a rushed decision. Kenyon has accepted an offer to defect to Roman Abramovich's Russian revolution at Chelsea, a move that Gill himself admitted was a bolt out of the blue. But the 45-year-old's elevation from managing director looks like a move planned in advance by the club's plc board. Gill has already stepped into Kenyon's shoes once before, replacing him as deputy chief executive three years ago when Kenyon took on the role that made him a Chelsea target. And the former First Choice Holidays executive - who joined the club as finance director in 1997 - believes he can repeat the transition. He told MUTV: Hopefully, the decision is the right one. The board didn't make a rushed decision, it is about succession and these decisions are thought through. It's not as if I'm coming in new to the situation. I'm very excited about it, it is an honour to be asked to help Manchester United reach the next level. While Kenyon's position was thought to have been undermined by the collapse of the Ronaldinho transfer deal, his tenure has undoubtedly been a successful one. He is widely credited with turning United into world leaders on the commercial front but he has also attracted praise for his strong relationship with manager Sir Alex Ferguson and his fan-friendly approach. All of which makes him a hard act to follow, but Gill is confident he can fill the breach. It's about making sure we turn more fans into customers, making sure we are at the forefront on and off the field, he said. I've known Alex for six and a half years and worked with him on all the deals and I hope to enjoy as close a relationship with Alex that Peter had. Whatever the contingency plans put in place by the United board, however, Kenyon's resignation, followed by an announcement he had accepted an offer to become chief executive officer of the Chelsea group of companies, is not something United were in control of. Kenyon is now officially on 'gardening leave' but a statement released on his behalf claimed Chelsea had made him an offer he could not refuse. Peter Kenyon has been offered the job of chief executive of the Chelsea group of companies, a position he has accepted, said the statement. He has enjoyed his six years at United enormously but feels this opportunity represents a challenge it is right to take at this stage of his career. It is thought Kenyon has been offered a huge salary hike from his £700,000-a-year Old Trafford post but the chance to work without the controls of a plc board might also have proved attractive. Ironically, only two months ago, as the first suggestions that Juan Sebastian Veron was about to leave United for Chelsea began to emerge, Kenyon claimed the Abramovich-inspired £100million-plus Stamford Bridge spending spree was good for the game as a whole. The Chelsea situation is quite unique, he said The transfer market is very flat but clearly the deals that have been done within England will be circulating around the market again which is positive for the game in this country. All you can say is what has happened there will see them continue to get stronger. Kenyon's advisors were refusing to answer why a confirmed United fan would ditch the club in favour of one which is unlikely to ever generate the same worldwide appeal, no matter how much money is spent. But Oliver Houston, spokesman for the influential Shareholders' United supporters' group, offered some thoughts. We can only speculate on the remuneration package Kenyon has been offered to give up managing one of the world's biggest football clubs to move to a club with very little international reach or profile, he said. Peter Kenyon always made great play of his loyalty to the club and his dyed-in-the-wool support for United. How sad that loyalty appears to have been so easily bought. [RedDevils] Kenyon
I've been to several meetings at which Peter Kenyon was the 'guest'. I've heard him speak and tried, as best I could, to 'hear' what he had to say. I've heard him say that he kept the 'faith'. I KNOW people who believed him. I DIDN'T - I've said so both on this List and to other people on many occasions. The news has NOT surprised me one little bit. Kenyon is the ultimate symbol of that group of people who have 'discovered' Manchester United over the past ten years. He has NO 'faith', no f**king 'faith' WHATSOEVER. It was all 'lip service'. For all his faults, and I acknowledge that he had many, Martin Edwards DID have the 'faith'. Of that there is NO doubt in my mind. Edwards NEVER pretended to be what he wasn't and I've gone on record (several times over the years) saying that I preferred Edwards to Kenyon. It just saddens me that, in this respect at least, I've been proved right. So we have a new man. I know absolutely nothing about David Gill except that he wears nice suits. Plainly he is another 'hard' business man. Far (FAR) greater minds than mine will know whether he is a good business man or not. But I suspect that David Gill will not pretend to have been a Manchester United supporter since 1948 or 1958 or 1968. In some respects that will represent a move in the right direction for me. If Gill is as tough as I think he is (he looks it) then he might be the right man for the job. All we can do is hope. In closing I want to ask anybody on this List who has the ear of anybody in a position of influence at Old Trafford (which I do not have, have never had, and never will have) to beg them to ensure that when Sir Alex wants to revisit his contract as the Manager of OUR football club that he is given what he wants and that we do NOT have the debacle that we understand went on last time. If you do have that ear, and will do me that favour, then you have thanks from the bottom of my heart. Keep the faith, Kenyon said he DID you know - he DIDN'T,Pete For all your e-business needs - Gapnet http://www.gapnet.co.uk Yahoo! [RedDevils] Chelsea forced to wait for Kenyon
Peter Kenyon will start work at Chelsea once the terms of his departure from Manchester United are finalised. Kenyon, who has agreed to become the new chief executive of the Blues' parent company Chelsea Village, is on 'garden leave' after announcing his resignation from Old Trafford. A statement on chelseafc.com, which gave no clue to the future of current chief executive Trevor Birch, read: Chelsea Village confirm it has agreed to employ Peter Kenyon as chief executive officer. Mr Kenyon's employment is set to commence as permitted by contractual arrangements with his current employer. Kenyon's departure - and his replacement as chief executive by managing director David Gill - was confirmed formally in an announcement to the Stock Exchange on Tuesday morning. United's share price fell by five per cent when the market opened on Tuesday morning. It emerged on Monday afternoon that Kenyon was on his way to join Chelsea as part of Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich's rebuilding of the club. Although United released a statement announcing the changes on Monday night, as a publicly limited company they were obliged to make it official to the City. Quinton Fortune and David Bellion should feature for Manchester United reserves as they take on Leeds at Wakefield's Belle Vue Stadium. With the majority of the first-team squad away on international duty, Fortune and new signing Bellion are the only senior players likely to be involved on Tuesday evening as United the reserves play their third game in eight days. The accent will be on youth with both sides fielding youngsters from their Under-19 squads although Cyril Chapuis is set to play his first competitive game for Leeds since joining them from Marseille. [RedDevils] United fans question 'loyalty'
United fans question 'loyalty' By Richard Bright Telegraph 09/09/2003 Peter Kenyon's move from Old Trafford to Stamford Bridge has already provoked stinging criticism from Manchester United fans. Oliver Huston, spokesman for Shareholders United, the Manchester United Supporters Trust, has also called into question Kenyon's much-publicised loyalty to the club he has supported since his father took him to watch the European Cup final triumph in 1968. Peter Kenyon has always made great play of his loyalty to the club and his dyed-in-the-wool support for Manchester United - how sad that his loyalty appears to have been so easily bought, he said. But the move has been welcomed by those close to Chelsea. Colin Hutchinson, the former Chelsea chief executive, said: It is a shock and is out of the blue, concerning the rivalry down the years between United and Chelsea. Obviously, as part of the new Chelsea they have brought the guy in to try to surpass United. He is a very good businessman. I think it is fair to say that what he has done commercially has made them streets ahead in England as far as resources are concerned. If you look globally at their financial situation - compared to Real Madrid who have assembled a superb squad but also piled up a load of debt - they are on a sound footing. He will be a big loss to Manchester United. Kenyon will be moving from a plc with shareholders to satisfy to a private company under new owner Roman Abramovich. Hutchinson added: I think the interesting thing is Chelsea, in recent times, has got its soul back and it is back to a football club. There has been a feeling among supporters over the last couple of years that perhaps the priority was not football and there was a distraction from the plc. I think obviously Peter will be involved throughout but it won't make that much difference on a day-to-day basis to [manager] Claudio Ranieri. The football side has got its own structures. Peter Ridsdale, the former Leeds United chairman, said: Peter spent a lot of money when he bought Rio Ferdinand from me at Leeds so he is obviously used to writing big cheques and that is what probably attracted Roman Abramovich. [RedDevils] United shares fall
Shares in Manchester United fell 4 per cent after the club confirmed that chief executive Peter Kenyon was leaving to join Chelsea. Shares in the English champions dropped 8p to 170p as investors reacted with dismay to the surprise announcement. Kenyon, who is moving to Chelsea as part of Roman Abramovich's rebuilding of the club, will be replaced immediately by United managing director David Gill. City analysts said Kenyon, who oversaw United's transformation into a global brand, would be a loss to Old Trafford. The club sealed their ground-breaking £303million, 13-year deal with kit manufacturer Nike under his leadership. They also signed a £30million sponsorship agreement with Vodafone in 2000. In April this year, United announced sharply improved turnover and operating profits, up by 13 per cent and 32 per cent respectively. One City expert played down the fall in the share price, saying it was just a reaction to the surprising news. Recommending investors to buy the shares, Wise Speke analyst David Pope said United would be left in very capable hands. New CEO Gill and finance director Nick Humby have significant experience and little would change, Pope said. He added: There isn't anything that won't get done. Although United released a statement announcing the changes on Monday night, as a publicly limited company they are obliged to make an official announcement to the City. Shares in United reached a peak of more than 400p in 2000 when United were champions of Europe, league champions and FA Cup winners, but sank to less than 100p before staging a revival this year. [RedDevils] too close for comfort?
REUTERS; LON; 04 SEP 2003; SP Upton Park Chief Terrence Brown has promised supporters that the hammer sales are over after selling fans in the Bobby Moore lower to Chelsea for GBP8m, despite claims he would only have to sell the fans in the Chicken Run. Brown had claimed in May, that the 'nucleus' of West Ham support would be kept. Brown's statement released yesterday read: Chelsea now have an array of talent on the field, but because they have no fans, and the ones they do have are crap, Roman came in and bid for some fans, I had to say yes. Plus they were getting on my nerves a bit As the deal was sealed, those entering the stadium for last nights game against Bradford, were whisked down to Stamford Bridge in coaches and ordered to support Chelsea. One former Hammers fan said: The board and I had been in discussions for 18 months about the renewal of my season ticket, but ultimately I just wanted Champions League football to further my enjoyment of the sport, something the club couldn't provide. So I've fcuked off to Chelsea with the players Another supporter said: I was preparing for life in division 1, when the board told me they'd sold me to Chelsea cos their fans are so pony. But now i'm here I'll forget about my past and start wearing naff earrings, mind you, it seems like yesterday I was telling fellow supporters not to pi$$ off and leave just cos we got relegated Trevor Brooking insisted today that no more supporters would have to be sold, despite claims in a newspaper this morning which suggested some fans would be loaned out to Portsmouth till the end of the season. However, Portsmouth club source stated that's fiction, because even if we did, we'd have nowhere to put them... because our ground is a $hit hole. Brown was unavailable for comment today as he had changed the GBP8m into five pound notes and was rolling in the money in his garden, laughing. Yahoo!
