I feel Fergie, The FA, The Olympic Committee and my parents should make the distinction between performance enhancing drugs and social drugs. To lump them all together is lazy, predictable and does not address the problem. Social drugs include tobacco and alcohol, which although legal, are far more damaging than marajana (in my opinion). Does Fergie's blanket ban apply to his beloved claret? Social drugs, by their very nature, reduce not enhance sporting performance. Any professional sportsperson should be big enough, old enough and ugly enough to make their own choices between attempting to reach the summit in their chosen sport, or have a good time. They shouldn't be punished by outside agencies which have a political agenda and not the welfare of the athelete at heart. Dave Blatt Yahoo! [RedDevils] Fergie would sack drug takers
Sir Alex Ferguson has vowed to sack any of his players caught taking drugs. The Manchester United manager has promised fans that he will not tolerate players taking drugs, be it for social use or to enhance their performance on the field. Ferguson told the News of the World: "I would like our supporters to be sure of one thing: if there were any danger of one of our players dabbling in any kind of drug, be it to enhance his performance or for his social life, he would be quickly gone from Manchester United. "Be assured that the manager, his coaches and medical staff would know. Believe me, we have nothing like that at Old Trafford." Ferguson has stood by defender Rio Ferdinand who has been the centre of a drugs controversy since failing to take a test. There has been no suggestion that Ferdinand has been taking banned substances but his failure to take an official test is a serious matter and could lead to a ban. The Football Association has gathered evidence surrounding Ferdinand's missed test and are considering their course of action. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Yahoo!
