You haven't posted the versions of various error-producing progs. However, 
when I installed KDE3, kdeadmin required upgrading rpm to 4.0.4-7, along 
with popt. This conflicted with up2date which I uninstalled. In order to 
get a working up2date I then installed python-clap and built up2date from 
the source rpm on rawhide's site - 2.7.77-7. It now works.

When I upgraded rpm to 4.0.4-7, and along with it popt to 1.6.4-7, it broke 
up2date (which I uninstalled to avoid dependency issues). If you've 
installed kdeadmin from KDE3 you'll have done the same. I haven't tried 
compiling up2date from source yet, rather I'm using RedCarpet.
