I've been using xine, which has worked nicely except that about 40% of
my (ordinay commecial) DVD disks don't play.

What exactly do you mean that mplayer is faster at cracking decyption
keys? I wonder if that might be of help in my problem.

Re: (no subject)

2003-03-25 Thread Haines Brown
I also did very well with RH7.3 and previous versions of RedHat going
back to 6.2, but 8.0 never worked out for me. The system installation
seems flawed (clipboard not working right; trouble with IPTables) and
apps broken (pppoe, emacs fonts, etc.). My fumbling efforts to fix the
problems have led to more problems (right now a gnome crash loop
prevents my normal user from using the X server). Part of the problem
is the desktop integration that makes manual editing of configuration
files difficult.

For example, from a console, how does one edit a file so that
windows-switcher won't be loaded by gnome-panel when X server is
started? From a console, how does one prevent gnome2 from loading
gnome-panel when X server is started? By digging, I discovered a
workplace-switcher help file that's more detailed than the one
implemented in the workplace switcher, but its links to a
workspacelist-prefs file seem invalid. All this undoubtedly due to my
ignorance, but I suspect it may also hint that the *.0 version was a
bit shakey.

I was looking foward to 8.2, but because of my problems, thought I'd
even venture an 8.1 upgrade. But I'm sure to be shy of 9.0!

Since I prefer to configure files from the keyboard rather than gui
configuration utilities, I'm considering debian. However, I'll first
try gentoo and move to debian if gentoo overwhelms me.

gnome-panel loop

2003-03-25 Thread Haines Brown
I'm running RedHat 8.0.

I managed to break gnome-panel, perhaps specifically the window
switcher (pager). As a result when I startx, the panel crashes as it
is being loaded with applets, etc. When I dismiss the crash dialog,
the panel tries to load again and I'm caught in a gnome-panel crash
loop, forcing me to stop the X server.

Oddly, both root and one user experience this problem, but not another
user. I tried simply to remove ~/.gnome*, but when those files were
regenerated, the problem persisted. For both reasons I believe the
problem is deeper.

My aim is to escape the loop either by recovering appropriate files
from a backup or by manually editing a configuration file. I would
rather uninstall and reinstall gnome-panel, for this leads me into a
dependency hell.

Is the pager a separate RPM application that I can uninstall and
reinstall? Or is the pager built into gnome-panel?

If a separate application, what gnome-panel script calls the pager so
that I can run the panel without it?

If the pager is built in to the gnome-panel, Where is gnome-panel
called so that I can startx without a panel?

Is there any source of information on gnome-panel that addresses such
questions?
