NFS: How to Use?

2003-10-08 Thread Nick Wilson
Hi all,

Relavent docs for dummies needed ;)

I've set up using the nfs stuff in kde a shared folder on each of the
two networked pcs. Is there a simple way to connect to those shared
folders? - Some tool or GUI that I can use?

Many thanks..

Yep, that and restarting iptables did the trick ;-)

I can't seem to connect to a remote desktop though. When I try to
'browse' it says "browsing the network not possible, you probably have
not set up SPL support properly" (or somthing like that...)

...any idea what that might mean?

Thanks for the help!

Ok, where will i find the subnet mask? - And, are there any tools or
command line apps to inspect the network? - I'm not even sure of the
hostnames... ;-)

Network Troubleshooting Help

2003-10-07 Thread Nick Wilson
Hi all,

So, I'm connected to the net, and have an x-system (if you've seen my

Whilst fixing my nvnet driver though, I seem to have lost the network to
my wifes PC connected via an adsl hub. Earlier I could ping our ip
address and send/recieve packets but no longer can...

Can someone tell me where/what I should be looking at to resolve this
issue?

For anyone that finds this via www or the archives here's how I did it:

I removed the nvidia drivers by hand!
Then re-installed. No problem.

nvnet driver trouble after kernel upgrade - Help please

2003-10-07 Thread Nick Wilson
Hi all,

After finally getting my NVIDIA chipset working I upgraded the kernel to
2.4.20-20.9 (just installed all errata on rh9) and can no longer bring
up eth0

I re-patched the new kernel, ran 'make menuconfig' --> the NVIDIA
chipset is indeed there, and enabled. Ran make dep and now when booting
I get: "nvnet device eth0 does not seem to be present"

I even tried deleting it's entry in /usr/sysconfig/hwconf and
re-detecting it to no avail.

Can anyone help? - I seem to have exhausted all the possibilities I can
think of and it seems silly to boot into the old kernel when I want to
use the net

Many thanks..

BUT, I *know* there is somthing needs doing in the XFree86Config file

I'm not certain. I have to make a disk or some html files and then go
slot it in the win machine and load it to check them in IE

It's unideal I know but I need a temporary solution till I get them
hooked up ;-)

Right, it's got it!

Problem is the GIMP doesn't (under kde)? Thanks for the pointers, is
there some list somewhere of all these handly little service
starts/stops and tools like chkfontpath?

I only seem to find them on this list when I have to ask questions which
is not ideal ;-)

I didn't restart the server (i don't know how?) but I rebooted the

Xvidtune Help with XF86Config

2003-07-01 Thread Nick Wilson
Hi all,

I can set my monitor nicely with xvidtune but cannot make the changes
permanent. Could someone please tell me what to edit in the XF86Config
file?

### Here are the details I think are relevant.

Output from successful xvidtune session:

Vendor: Monitor Vendor, Model: CTX VL510 series, PL5 series
Num hsync: 1, Num vsync: 1
hsync range 0: 30.00 - 56.30
vsync range 0: 50.00 - 110.00
"800x600" 56.30800 848 912 1048600 601 604 631 +hsync +vsync

The Section from my Xconfig file:

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
VendorName "Monitor Vendor"
ModelName"CTX VL510 series, PL5 series"
DisplaySize 280210
HorizSync30.0 - 55.0
VertRefresh 50.0 - 110.0
Option "dpms"
EndSection

### What I tried:

I changed the line HorizSync to 56.30 and rebooted with no joy. I'm sure
there must be somthing I'm missing but I cannot work it out, any
pointers gladly appreciated.

Thanks!

KDE Troubles with Resolution and Windows

2003-06-26 Thread Nick Wilson
Hi everyone,

I've just installed RH9 and am having a spot of bother with KDE. The
main thing is that since I changed my resolution from 1024 to 800x600
all my windows are very slightly off the screen on the right side.

Can anyone help with that please?

Secondly, I have no 'x' close button on any of my windows! It's very
annoying and I just cannot find where to fix this

Many thanks for any help here ;-)

Hi everyone,

I'm having the most bizzare problem. I'll keep it short...

My web pages (on 7.2 box that I've never had trouble from) appear to be
loading twice.

I have tested using an incrementing session variable and it is
definately happening. The really odd thing though is that this happens
in Mozilla, Konqueror and NN4 but NOT Lynx?

What might cause this? Apache or something else? I've been running
Vhosts on this box for development for a long time and never had any
trouble?

Many thanks...

upgrading to 7.3

2002-05-30 Thread Nick Wilson

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

Hi everyone,

I want to set myself a little weekend project and upgrade from 7.2 to
7.3 and as I've found nothing on the redhat site about this thought to
ask for a little advice.

I've not done an upgrade before and I have tons of stuff on my machine
that I don't want to lose. So my question is, if I upgrade, am I likely
to lose any information?

I have a few virtual domains and of course loads of stuff in my /home
dir that I need as well as some custom installs like Mutt and Mozilla
and so forth.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Many thanks...

hehe, no worries.

Yes I believe so. The trouble started after running up2date which was
supposed to update rpm amongst other things...

rpm-build-4.0.4-7x
rpm-4.0.3-1.03

Just up2date'ing... I'm certain that's where the trouble started.

Thanks for the help :-)

Well, the rpm version is rpm-4.0.3-1.03
so I'm not really sure how to do the --replacepkgs?

How do I find the right xxx.rpm?

Very condecending. Whose, 'we'? You talk as if it's some kind of elite
group that I'm not a part of. Rather than wasting my time, just skip
questions if you feel they've been answered. Seeing as the errata only
came out yesterday I think it was quite reasonable to ask a question
directly of the list. If it has been answred before their was no real
harm in the question. It's not as if I'm asking the list how to use rpm

Hmmm... good question, perhaps cumbersome is a bad word choice. What I
mean is that I don't like having to type in te full path to the remote
*and* the full path to the local every time I transfer.

typical command looks like this right?

$ scp path/of/files/to/upload/ :/path/to remote/server/blah

whereas in ncftp id just type
$ put -r dirname

Maybe I misunderstand, feel free to correct me :-)
