Re : Re:Severe problem (cannot boot) after upgrading glibc and glibc-common

2003-10-20 Thread sting sting
Hello ,
Thnxs everybody !
Well , I had tried to follow Chris Purcel FAQ (in Tek Tips) , as he advised
in his post;
I did start linux rescue from RH CD #1 , I did say "yes" to mount the
filesystem, (and
***NOT*** chose the "read only' option).
and erased glibc rpms ; but when
I tried to install the first glibc rpm by
rpm -Uvh /mnt/sources/RedHat/RPMS/glibc-2.3.2-5.i386.rpm --nodeps

I got the follwoing error:
error:
unpacking of archive failed on file /lib/i686: cpio: mkdir failed - read
only file system

I really hasn't a clue from where does this "read only file system" error
stems.

So Still i cannot boot my RH 9 ;
what shall I do ?

Severe problem (cannot boot) after upgrading glibc and glibc-common

2003-10-20 Thread sting sting
Hello ,
Help !
I have severe problem (cannot boot) after upgrading glibc and glibc-common
on RedHat 9 ;
I had   glibc-2.3.2-11.9.i686.rpm
I wanted to update to glibc-2.3.2-27.9.i386.rpm.
rpm -Uvh glibc-2.3.2-27.9.i386.rpm said it needs updated glibc-common.
I had  glibc-common-2.3.2-11.9.i386.rpm;
So  I downloaded glibc-common-2.3.2-27.9.i386.rpm and
put it and glibc-2.3.2-27.9.i386.rpm in a separate folder , and performed
from there rpm -Uvh *.rpm ;
I got an error telling something about scriplet;
from then on I could not go on , because starting a terminal or
openeing a simple application did not succeed (segfault).
So I restarted Linux ;
I get the follwoing errors at start:
(befor reaching Login)
NIT:Id"1" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT:Id"2" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT:Id"3" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT:Id"4" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT:Id"5" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT:Id"6" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT:Id"4" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT: no more processes left in this runlevel.
also power off/power on did not solve the problem.
I cannot user that machine currently.
What to do ?
regards
john

a tool for converting from *.avi to vcd or svcd?

2003-10-05 Thread sting sting
Hello,
can anybody recommend a tool on RH9 for converting
from *.avi to vcd or svcd?
I had googled the net and afterwards
I had tried with mplayer utilityies; I had also tried with avidemux
http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/ ; I followed the conver avi section in
their doc link)  to
create a video file and an audio file from the *.avi file, and then to
combine them together
with mplex , but the mplex operation failed;

Did anybody succeed in a task like that ?

CD writer for RH 9 - how to know if is suitable ?

2003-09-28 Thread sting sting
Hello,

I want to use a simple internal CD writer on Linux RH 9 .
Now , I tried to see if the types of CD writer
which I was suggested by my dealer (and work on windows)
are fit to Linux RH 9.
The 4 types are:
BENQ 5224
TEAC 52
PHILIPS 5224K
SAMSUNG 52X24X52
Now I had looked at the RedHat Hardware Compatability List
in RedHat web site , and performed search for
theses types but could not find any information.
(when searching by "MAnufacturer", the SAMSUNG and BENQ do not appear
at all)
what should I do ?
