No, don't be sorry... I think you're on to something. You should work
on that plan... ;)

And that is such a bummer. I know, we can write a program that will
render a document in say postscript, convert it to tiff, email it to a
recipient where if they have the program they can run it through an OCR
program that will supply the original text. Of course we will NOT open
source it but rather patent the process and begin selling it to windows
users.

There are bound to be several million out there that would pay for such
a neat program. When Microsoft calls and threatens to put us out of
business we will cave and sell for a few bucks.

Sorry, I feel like a smart ass tonight.

Those are all external services, which the original poster explicitly
did not want. They also all have phone lines *somewhere*, so they're
not purely internet, which is the other thing he asked for.

Faxing requires phone lines. Somewhere.

No, that would be email. Even if fax were possible over IP, your
recipients would be limited to those who have similar setups, and no one
does. :)

It's not free, of course, but I use the maxemail service that allows me
to send an email and it is faxed to the intended. I can attach PDF files
to the email and they are rendered.

Internet Faxing...

2002-08-17 Thread Jim Hale

Is this possible WITHOUT using an external service?

I setup a Fax Server today (WinFax Pro) for me and my wife and I was
just wondering if it was possible to transmit faxes thru the Internet.

I have it setup on a phone line but was just wondering if it was
possible to send/receive thru the net.

Currently the box is a WinXP Pro box but would gladly switch it over to
Red Hat if there was a program that will allow me to set it up as a
Server and send faxes via Win2K and WinXp Pro Clients over the net (via
IP) or a phone line - and also receive (of course) :)

Thanks! :)
