RE: Lynksys PCMCIA support ?

2002-10-02 Thread Kim Allbritain

I appreciate your response, but being new to RH, I really do not know
what you are telling me.

My nic is a Linksys 10/100 PCMPC100 PCMCIA card.

You say you are using (null) and that Linksys uses the prism2 module ?
Can you elaborate on those 2 items please ?

I have used a WPC11 card since Redhat 7.1. I am using (null) right now.
The linksys card uses the prism2 module. I did notice, however that the
wireless config option in 'neat' was removed. That was remedied in 8.0.
All of the installs I did for 7.3 though, detected and installed my card
flawlessly.

Just recently installed 7.3 on my Toshiba Satellite 4015CDT
with only a bit more difficulty that Suse Linux 8.0.

One glaring difference is that RH does not seem to support any hardware
from Linksys (i.e. Pcmcia Ethercard).

Do I have to buy a new card just because of RH ?
Everyone,:-) else supports this vendor.
Is there not some way of trying to use this card ?

The pcmcia services are running OK.

Try grabbing RedHat 8.0 (purchase or download and burn) if you can,
otherwise, install 7.3 with the linksys card plugged in. The installer
should detect and install the card for you. I never got into manually
installing the card in 7.3. Last time I did that was when I was using
Mandrake 6 and I used the wvlan_ng program. 8.0 will allow you add the card
through the program 'neat'.

To answer your two questions at the end of your response:

(null) was the beta version for the new RedHat 8.0 Psyche

The Prism2 module is the driver that linux uses to drive the linksys
PCMCIA WPC11 card (which I'm guessing you are using, check the model number
on the card). I have also heard of problems with v.3 of this card. Is this
the card you are using?

RE: Lynksys PCMCIA support ?

2002-10-02 Thread Kim Allbritain

Hi Guys
Indeed it is not a wireless card.
Oddly I did install 7.3 with the card connected, RH saw nothing.
When I attempt to add a card via KDE Network Device utility it sees nothing
either.

Is there no way to make the system probe the hardware again ?

I just noticed that if I look at my PCMCIA info it says that
card 1 has a 'ne2000 compatible ethernet' in it.

Perhaps I can manually configure it ?
I know the memory and IRQ but there are other parms such as :
IO,IO1,IO2,DMA0,DMA1 ???

Some do, some don't. It depends in the chipset revision level of the card.
The linux-wlan-ng homepage has a FAQ about this, if I remember correctly.

You may not need it.

PCI ne2000 compatables work without these values.

The only module I can see on my system resembling an ne2000 is ne2k-pci.o

Can't do any harm to try i think. 'modprobe ne2k-pci' from memory.

There may be some proper PCMCIA version of the driver floating around
somewhere though.

Ed.

I guess I lucked out on the three different linksys cards I have used.
I had a 10/100 modem pcmcia card that I used from 6.0 thru 7.0

some where early I had to go to the linksys site and get a module.

Later it worked out of the box IIRC.
