Re: Samba : Linux client to M$ Windows ?

2002-07-03 Thread loophole
yup. It is possible. in RHL 7.2 and RHL 7.3, you can use Konqueror to browse an MS machine by specifying something like this at the location/address:
smb://windows_netbios_name/
windows_netbios_name here is the machine name of the win pc that can be seen in the network neighborhood. You need to configure your
kcontrol
And go to Network Windows Shares you need to provide the username, password (in your win pc) and workgroup.

RE: Samba : Linux client to M$ Windows ?

2002-06-27 Thread Carter, Shaun G

if sharing is enabled on the M$ pc the command would something similar to
the following

mount -t smbfs //server/share

if it is password protected it will ask you for the pw

also you can get the names of the shares on a server with the following
command

smbclient -L //server

if you use Xwindows, you might like LinNeighborhood.

It's a rather nifty program that works like MS Network Neighborhood.

RE: Samba : Linux client to M$ Windows ?

2002-06-27 Thread Engstrom_Carl

The short answer is yes, you can access a M$ share from Linux. I have done
this before with the smbmount command. It basically lets you mount a
CIFS/SMB filesystem to the Linux server for local access. In my case I
mounted a share, music folder, to my home directory, so that I could pull
MP3 streams on the road. It worked fine, except for the fact that when the
windows machine goes down, which happens often due to the built in stress
management system (blue screen), the mount has to be re-established.

Lookup the man for smbmount.

there are also some good docs on troubleshooting and step-by-step testing
and setup that will help you get off to the right start.

Carl,

You can mount automatically (but don't do this over the Internet because the
password is transmitted in clear text):

smbmount //computername/sharename /mnt/mountpoint -o
username=everyone%password

and to unmount:

smbumount /mnt/mountpoint
