RE: Unix and Linux Books
I found three books that have REALLY helped me: SAMS Red Hat Linux 6 Unleashed by David Pitts and Bill Ball et al. (Explains most networking services in great detail, I use it almost everyday) SAMS Linux: A Network Solution for Your Office by Viktor T. Toth (Good book to go from NT to linux. Lots of networking info) SYBEX Mastering Redhat Linux 6 by Arman Danesh (More of a beginner's book to redhat 6. Explains how to use linux. The one is more of a prequel to the first one) -Original Message- From: Rev. David P. Re: Unix and Linux Books
Thanks for the reply, MJ. This was just the sort of thing I wanted to know. And the quote from Hitler (One People, One Country, One Leader) was great. Rusty -- To unsubscribe: mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe" as the Subject.

Hi, 1) Running Linux - Matt Walsh 2) Unix System Administration Handbook ("The Red Book" hide this book) There are many others but these should get you going fine... regards, Ahbaid. RE: Unix and Linux Books
>am thinking of getting. I am transitioning from a Windows NT administrator Don't worry, nobody's perfect! ;) >Linux in a Nutshell, Second Edition; Siever, Ellen; O'Reilly According to Linux Journal, this is a "must have". >Running Linux, Third Edition; Welsh, Matt; O'Reilly & Associates Really good one. >Linux Complete; Taylor, Grant; Sybex I am not at home right now, but if this is my Linux Complete, then it is a collection of some HOWTO's. You have all them in your computer, but if you want a printout, it is really nice to have it. >Linux : The Complete Reference, Third Edition; Petersen, Richard; Osborne Don't have it. But I have a Linux Complete Command Reference from SAMS, that is a collection of man pages in a printout form. Again, you have them in your system, but if you want a printout and an index, this one's for you! >System Admin Books Not my topic. I am a Mech. Eng., but I am learning! =) >Linux Network Administrator's Guide; Kirch, Olaf; O'Reilly Got this one on your system and CD, along with the System Administration Guide, and a programmer's guide, and two or three different installation guides. You can print the docs yourself, read them on line in your system, or buy the printouts. But you already have them (you may like checking them out before buying). One I bought and like a lot is one called "UNIX Secrets". It takes you from normal user to the next step. -Manuel. -- To unsubscribe: mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe" as the Subject.
Re: Unix and Linux Books
Rusty >Linux in a Nutshell, Second Edition; Siever, Ellen; O'Reilly I consider this book at absolute must have. It's a great reference, I use it just about everyday. It keeps me from having to remember every little command switch :) >System Admin Books > >Essential System Administration, Second Edition; Frisch, AEleen; O'Reilly This book has helped me out on occasion, also TCP/IP Netowrk Administraion by O'Reilly is good. In general I really like the O'Reilly books, plus they have sample chapters for most of their volumes online at their website. -Bob Burton IT Consultant Literati Information Technology, LLC -- To unsubscribe: mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe" as the Subject.

Rusty wrote: > > I just wanted whatever input you guys cared to send my way on some books I > am thinking of getting. IMO: For a general introduction to Linux, _Running Linux_ 3rd ed by Welsh, et al is tops. I've also found _Linux in a Nutshell_ to be very useful. A good Samba book ( for example, _Using Samba_ [O'Reilly]) will be important in a heterogenous network. The _Network/Systems Administrator's Guides_ are available on-line. My most frequently used resources, however, are the usr docs, (file:/usr/docs in your browser if running RH), man & info pages and the RedHat stuff in /usr/docs (e.g. the Reference Guide /usr/doc/rhl-rg ...). The Google Linux search is also useful for finding online resources & documentation: http://www.google.com/linux Marc --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] Veteran, Bermuda Triangle Expeditonary Force 1986 - 1957 --- -- To unsubscribe: mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe" as the Subject.
Re: Unix and Linux Books
One of the ones I found quite useful is Linux Companion for System Administrators by Jochen Hein and published by Addison-Wesley. I found myself doing the same as you a year and a half ago. :-) On Thu, 13 Jan 2000, Rusty wrote: > I just wanted whatever input you guys cared to send my way on some books I > am thinking of getting.
