Thanks Jason, that was the hint I needed. "Unix domain sockets" was
set but as a module and I did not have the alias defined. One line and it all
worked.

Cheers,
-Robin.

Most likely you don't have "Unix domain sockets" compiled in your kernel.
Its under the networking options. Good luck

er I do not see any problem with kernel-2.4.0-test10 on a RedHat 6.2.
(have just switched to test10 to send out this e-mail - using 2.2.17
usually)

As for X, maybe this is a stupid question, but did you have xfs running
before you started it?

What version of the sysklogd package are you running?
I have 2.4.0-test10 running on 6.2 (with the updated packages of course
since it's dumb to do anything out of the box if there's an update).
I am using sysklogd-1.3.31-17

Suggestion: Go to a 6.2 updates mirror and upgrade EVERYTHING that you're
currently running... glibc, sysklogd, etc. Then try it again. Also, if you
use pppd, grab the ppp-2.4.0 tarball from somewhere, remove the ppp RPM
and install the tarball. 2.4.0 is required by.. 2.4.x :)

The syslog and X server are pretty basic (;-)) , I think the kernel developers
would have noticed.

Keep in mind that this could actually be a 'programming error' in the
kernel, and that you may not be having a config problem.

You say it started after test4? After every release?

RH6.2 + kernel 2.4.0 problems

2000-11-12 Thread Robin Atwood

This is another attempt to solve this problem since 2.4 seems nearly upon us!
When I boot kernel 2.4.0-test10 with a stock RH6.2 system I get two errors,
first the syslog won't start:

syslogd: cannot create /dev/log: Address family not supported by protocol

and then the X server won't start:

..
_X11TransSocketOpen: socket() failed for local
_X11TransSocketOpenCOTSClient: Unable to open socket for local
_X11TransOpen: transport open failed for local/opal.attglobal.net:0
giving up.
xinit: Address family not supported by protocol (errno 97): unable to
connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.

Something is obviously missing, introduced after 2.4.0-test4 I think, but
what? What is this 'address family' business?

TIA
-Robin.
