Re: Realplayer 7 only runs as root

2000-03-14 Thread CCH

I installed RealPlayer 7 in user directory with success. However, it
seems very sluggish in video but audio is great crisp clear. I am not
sure if I installed it right though. I used the file that require glibc
2.0 to install (not an rpm.)

I am fairly newbie but have been using Linux for few months. I have tried
installing this realplayer with success however I am getting very poor picture
frame result. In otherwords it looks more like slide movie than motion movie.
I do not know what I did wrong all I did is follow the instruction along with
this file which puzzle me making it sound too simple such as entering command:

chmod u+x rp7install.bin ./rp7install.bin

then I execute rp7install.bin (still puzzled with .bin ending) and I was able to
install it all the way through.
Now is my picture frame freeze result caused from the program being in beta or
is it installed incorrectly. I tried a few driver option and also tried
changing the quality setting to lower the cpu usage and see what happened with
no success but I was able to hear the audio crisp clear. Thanks in advance.

Just guessing. Make a backup copy on your drive so you can put it back
the way you currently have it, then do the following:

# chown your_user_name.your_user_group -Rv /path_to
_RealPlayer_top_level_directory

...where the '#' sign is your su or root prompt. Then try running it.
Also check the Netscape plug-in directory and it's permissions and
owners.

Hope it works, if so let me know - subject REALPLAYER NOW WORKS.

Bye -thanks_TED

Realplayer 7 only runs as root

2000-03-14 Thread Timothy Reaves

I can't figure this one out. It is installed on a RH6 box, and
permissions are 755 with the directories suid root (which the install
did). Runs fine as root, but not as a user.

Any help appreciated.

That pages states that glibc 2.0 is required. Does that mean it works
under RHL 5.x? Has anybody tried?

Cheers,

Yes, I continually have bad luck with RealPlayer of th eolder varieties.
Core dumps. immediate sig11s. Almost as bad as Netscape.

They (real) just released a new version very recently. Like today.

They have the G2 version which works well, you cannot find the link from
the real page, go to freshmeat and do a search and you will find it, that
is what I did.

I know that Real has released RealServer 7 for Linux, but has the player
been released yet? I couldnt find it. If it hasnt, anyone know when it
will be released? In the meantime, whats the link to the most recent
player? The version I have keeps crapping out.
