Unless RH9 is different than earlier versions you should have a
config- in /boot. It will indicate what your kernel
has set or unset.

Thanks for the response. I cant believe this would not have even been
mentioned in any of the FAQ's or installation guides. Is this something
that RedHat recently stopped compiling into their own blessed kernels? I
am not keen on downloading the entire source RPM for the latest kernel
over my tiny pipe just to find out that its not the problem. Can anyone
confirm that USB modem support is in fact no longer compiled or
modularized into the latest official Redhat 9 kernel's?

Thanks for any help.

look at your .config in /usr/src/your_kernel_name
In the line
# USB Network adaptors

You must have activate your USB modem drivers.

Redhat 9 and the Alcatel Speedtouch 330 USB

2003-05-29 Thread kenk
I have followed a few FAQ's and HOW-TO's to get this as far as it
currently is, but I am still unable to get the modem to connect. Here's
the log:

May 28 19:03:15 server pppoa3[25098]: pppoa3 version 1.2-beta1 started by
root (uid 0)
May 28 19:03:15 server /etc/hotplug/net.agent: NET unregister event not
supported
May 28 19:03:15 server pppoa3[25098]: Control thread ready
May 28 19:03:15 server pppd[24798]: Using interface ppp0
May 28 19:03:15 server pppoa3[25098]: host  --> pppoa3 --> modem stream ready
May 28 19:03:15 server pppoa3[25098]: modem --> pppoa3 --> host  stream ready
May 28 19:03:15 server /etc/hotplug/net.agent: assuming ppp0 is already up
May 28 19:03:15 server pppoa3[25098]: Error reading usb urb
May 28 19:03:15 server pppoa3[25098]: Woken by a sem_post event -> Exiting
May 28 19:03:15 server pppoa3[25098]: Read from usb Canceled
May 28 19:03:15 server pppoa3[25098]: Exiting
May 28 19:03:15 server pppd[24798]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/pts/2
May 28 19:03:15 server pppd[24798]: ioctl(PPPIOCSASYNCMAP): Inappropriate
ioctl for device(25)
May 28 19:03:15 server pppd[24798]: tcflush failed: Input/output error
May 28 19:03:15 server /etc/hotplug/net.agent: NET unregister event not
supported
May 28 19:03:15 server pppd[24798]: Exit.

This is using the 1.2b user mode driver from Source-forge. The modem works
flawlessly under Windows of course. I cant find any details when I STFW on
the "error reading usb urb". I am loading the alcaudsl.sys image into the
modem with no problem and it syncs up just fine. I am running kernel
2.4.20-13.9. My USB hardrive on another port works fine as well.

Can anyone recommend a fix before I go out and buy a DSL to ethernet bridge?
