Re: Kernel oops

2002-05-25 Thread Statux

Whenever I change any hardware, I like to recompile the kernel to make
sure everything is peachy. Try recompiling the kernel and see what
happens.

but this drive should not have been accessed at this time (it's only used

kernel oops using bonded ethernet

2000-09-22 Thread Michael R. Jinks

I'm trying to bond all four interfaces of a D-Link DFE-570TX ethernet card
using the bonding module (kernel version 2.2.16). It appears to work as long
as I'm very gentle with it, but sooner or later I start to get segfaults,
usually just in the course of trying to get the system into runlevel 3 or 5.

I can _usually_ bring about the segfault condition deliberately by attempting
to bring down networking. For example, in runlevel 1:

# /etc/rc.d/init.d/network start (completes fine)
# /etc/rc.d/init.d/sshd start (completes fine; routing table looks good;
system accessible via ssh using the bonded interface. HOORAY!!!)
# /etc/rc.d/init.d/network stop -- kernel oops

As soon as I see the output of the oops on the console once, I can't get the
system sane again without a reboot. Sometimes the system freezes altogether,
and fsck is my friend. From watching "strace ifconfig", I see that I get a
segfault every time we try to read from /proc/net/dev after the first fault.

The problem does not appear when I only use one interface on the D-Link card,
so I suspect that the problem is something to do with bonding rather than
the device driver for the NIC.

The rest of this mail is taken from /var/log/messages during an attempt to
bring down networking. I'm not great at reading these things but I notice
that we seem to get something similar for each interface in the bond, including
bond0 itself. Thanks for any thoughts. -m

ok... all joking aside I just got my second Oops in the log files... I am getting
concerned... just not too sure what I should be doing about this... is this a sign of
things that are going to be getting worse real soon now?

is there a man page I should be reading or a HOWTO or FAQ?

TIA - dan.

Not necessarily, but it probably won't go away.

%-
%- is there a man page I should be reading or a HOWTO or FAQ?

Yes, read the /usr/src/linux/REPORTING-BUGS and the
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/oops-tracing.txt text files. They gives you
step-by-step instructions on how to trace and report the problem.

kernel Oops?

Hiya - just found this in my log files and was wondering if it's
something I should be worried about, and if so how I should start
worrying about it! :)
