kernel oops using bonded ethernet
I'm trying to bond all four interfaces of a D-Link DFE-570TX ethernet card using the bonding module (kernel version 2.2.16). It appears to work as long as I'm very gentle with it, but sooner or later I start to get segfaults, usually just in the course of trying to get the system into runlevel 3 or 5. I can _usually_ bring about the segfault condition deliberately by attempting to bring down networking. For example, in runlevel 1: # /etc/rc.d/init.d/network start (completes fine) # /etc/rc.d/init.d/sshd start (completes fine; routing table looks good; system accessible via ssh using the bonded interface. HOORAY!!!) # /etc/rc.d/init.d/network stop -- kernel oops As soon as I see the output of the oops on the console once, I can't get the system sane again without a reboot. Sometimes the system freezes altogether, and fsck is my friend. From watching "strace ifconfig", I see that I get a segfault every time we try to read from /proc/net/dev after the first fault. The problem does not appear when I only use one interface on the D-Link card, so I suspect that the problem is something to do with bonding rather than the device driver for the NIC. The rest of this mail is taken from /var/log/messages during an attempt to bring down networking. I'm not great at reading these things but I notice that we seem to get something similar for each interface in the bond, including bond0 itself. Thanks for any thoughts. -m Sep 22 17:54:52 prouter0 kernel: Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address 62696c6f Sep 22 17:54:52 prouter0 kernel: current-tss.cr3 = 06a7b000, %cr3 = 06a7b000 Sep 22 17:54:52 prouter0 kernel: *pde = Sep 22 17:54:52 prouter0 kernel: Oops: Sep 22 17:54:52 prouter0 kernel: CPU:0 Sep 22 17:54:52 prouter0 kernel: EIP:0010:[c885137b] Sep 22 17:54:52 prouter0 kernel: EFLAGS: 00010286 Sep 22 17:54:52 prouter0 kernel: eax: 62696c2f ebx: c6a40c60 ecx: c6993000 edx: c6993484 Sep 22 17:54:52 prouter0 kernel: esi: c6a37520 edi: c6a3757c ebp: 0400 esp: c6a7df24 Sep 22 17:54:52 prouter0 kernel: ds: 0018 es: 0018 ss: 0018 Sep 22 17:54:52 prouter0 kernel: Process ifconfig (pid: 576, process nr: 17, stackpage=c6a7d000) Sep 22 17:54:52 prouter0 kernel: Stack: c66a6143 c0150608 c88514c0 0143 c88514c0 c01506d9 Sep 22 17:54:52 prouter0 kernel:c66a6143 c88514c0 c69cca54 0400 c66a6000 0400 c0144a8e Sep 22 17:54:52 prouter0 kernel:c66a6000 c6a7df98 0400 c69cca40 ffea Sep 22 17:54:52 prouter0 kernel: Call Trace: [sprintf_stats+20/160] [c88514c0] [c88514c0] [dev_get_info+69/136] [c88514c0] [proc_file_read+154/468] [sys_read+174/196] Sep 22 17:54:52 prouter0 kernel:[system_call+52/56] Sep 22 17:54:52 prouter0 kernel: Code: 8b 40 40 ff d0 89 c2 83 c4 04 8b 02 01 06 8b 42 08 01 46 08 Sep 22 17:54:52 prouter0 network: Shutting down interface bond0 succeeded Sep 22 17:54:53 prouter0 kernel: Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address 62696c6f Sep 22 17:54:53 prouter0 kernel: current-tss.cr3 = 06a7b000, %cr3 = 06a7b000 Sep 22 17:54:53 prouter0 kernel: *pde = Sep 22 17:54:53 prouter0 kernel: Oops: Sep 22 17:54:53 prouter0 kernel: CPU:0 Sep 22 17:54:53 prouter0 kernel: EIP:0010:[c885137b] Sep 22 17:54:53 prouter0 kernel: EFLAGS: 00010286 Sep 22 17:54:53 prouter0 kernel: eax: 62696c2f ebx: c6a40c60 ecx: c6993000 edx: c6993484 Sep 22 17:54:53 prouter0 kernel: esi: c6a37520 edi: c6a3757c ebp: 0400 esp: c6693f24 Sep 22 17:54:53 prouter0 kernel: ds: 0018 es: 0018 ss: 0018 Sep 22 17:54:53 prouter0 kernel: Process ifconfig (pid: 591, process nr: 17, stackpage=c6693000) Sep 22 17:54:53 prouter0 kernel: Stack: c66f4143 c0150608 c88514c0 0143 c88514c0 c01506d9 Sep 22 17:54:53 prouter0 kernel:c66f4143 c88514c0 c69cc4b4 0400 c66f4000 0400 c0144a8e Sep 22 17:54:53 prouter0 kernel:c66f4000 c6693f98 0400 c69cc4a0 ffea Sep 22 17:54:53 prouter0 kernel: Call Trace: [sprintf_stats+20/160] [c88514c0] [c88514c0] [dev_get_info+69/136] [c88514c0] [proc_file_read+154/468] [sys_read+174/196] Sep 22 17:54:53 prouter0 kernel:[system_call+52/56] Sep 22 17:54:53 prouter0 kernel: Code: 8b 40 40 ff d0 89 c2 83 c4 04 8b 02 01 06 8b 42 08 01 46 08 Sep 22 17:54:53 prouter0 network: Shutting down interface eth0 succeeded Sep 22 17:54:53 prouter0 kernel: Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address 62696c6f Sep 22 17:54:53 prouter0 kernel: current-tss.cr3 = 06a8d000, %cr3 = 06a8d000 Sep 22 17:54:53 prouter0 kernel: *pde = Sep 22 17:54:53 prouter0 kernel: Oops: Sep 22 17:54:53 prouter0 kernel: CPU:0 Sep 22 17:54:53 prouter0 kernel: EIP:0010:[c885137b] Sep 22 17:54:53 prouter0 kernel: EFLAGS: 00010286 Sep 22 17:54:53 prouter0 k
