[evolution-data-server] Hard code freeze break plea

2020-03-05 Thread Milan Crha via release-team
Hello,
a user reported an issue [1] in 3.35.92 of evolution-data-server about
missing Google calendars (and tasks), when the account is configured in
GNOME Online Accounts. That's a regression after changes made months
ago.

I can wait with the fix for 3.36.1, but I'd prefer to have the fix
included in 3.36.0, because Google seems to be particularly popular,
thus having not shown calendars for newly created accounts in GOA would
be considered a problem by early adopters.

Thus I'd like to ask: can I commit the change for 3.36.0, please?

The fix is rather trivial [2] and I tested it that it can also fix
already created accounts, thus even users with already created new
accounts will have things fixed silently (after they start patched
evolution-source-registry).

Thanks and bye,
Milan

I also sent a notice to the distribution-list, in a hope to make

Release evolution-rss through GNOME infrastructure

2020-01-29 Thread Milan Crha via release-team
Hello,
for a background: there is an evolution-rss module in GNOME's git. It
was not released for a long time, possibly due to the original
maintainer being gone. I do not want to close/archive it, because it's
used by the users. I prepared a new release and when I wanted to
release it to GNOME's FTP, I realized it was never released through the
GNOME infrastructure. I recalled that the original maintainer had a
special page for its releases. I do not have access to that page. Note,
I'm not going to take over the project, I'm just keeping it running for
the users.

My question: would it be okay to release evolution-rss through GNOME
infrastructure? I guess it will be okay, but I want to be sure.

Just in case, with GNOME infrastructure I mean master.gnome.org and its
`ftpadmin install` tool.

Thanks and bye,
Milan

It already landed, that's why I initiated the mail/plea here:

Yes, yes, it doesn't close the WebKit bug, I thought I'm clear about
that. That's why I call it a workaround.

Hard code freeze break approval plea for Evolution

2019-09-03 Thread Milan Crha via release-team
Hello,
after a lengthy investigation around changes in WebKitGTK+ 2.25.x [1],
there was found a way to workaround the problem [2] for now, which
gives time to look for better solution in the future.

The change on the Evolution side is as simple as setting an environment
variable in its main(), to let WebKitGTK+ know the old behavior is
required, something like:

   g_setenv ("WEBKIT_USE_SINGLE_WEB_PROCESS", "1", FALSE);

This won't break older WebKitGTK+, because it doesn't know about that
new environment variable, and it'll help with the new WebKitGTK+. The
variable addition will be part of 2.25.92 release of WebKitGTK+.
Thanks and bye,

Long story short: This won't happen (any time soon). If you have any

I'm sorry.

Hi,
the above are two widgets, a label containing "URL:", which is also
marked for localization, and an entry showing actual URL being used in
the WebKitWebView below it, aka the URL itself, in the entry, is
changing during the process of the authentication and is not localized.

I wanted to re-use an existing string for the label, but there was none
suitable in the sources.

[evolution-data-server] UI/string freeze break approval request

2019-03-01 Thread Milan Crha via release-team
Hello,
I know this is awfully late, but I also believe this has a very limited
impact to all interested parties, including translators, documentation
and users itself.

I'd like to break the UI Freeze in evolution-data-server's
authentication dialog when using OAuth2, by adding URL line into
it [1]. It's only the

URL: [ https://accounts.google.com/signin/ ]

line in [1], which had been added. It's added, because Google requires
it to be there, which kind of makes sense, even for native
applications, though it makes the dialog uglier. The "URL:" text is
marked for localization, but I guess it's no big deal. Neither I think
this dialog is shown anywhere in the documentation (though I can be
wrong).

I do not think it's really necessary to have this done for 3.32.0, the
same as I agree that the timing, even for such small change, is really
bad, but I think it would be nice to have in the 3.32.0. I'd not ask
for it not being of the Google's requirement for it.

Thanks for consideration.

Bye,
Milan

Hi,
as I didn't receive the approval for the inclusion of the simplified
change for [1], I decided to unmark the two strings from translation in
gnome-3-26 branch (for 3.26.2+). It should not have any bad side-effect
for translators, from my point of view.

I did that, because I'm afraid more users will prefer to not have those
strings localized, while still using their preferred language in the
UI. I may eventually reconsider the whole issue later (for the
development version), but the current state is that the development
version is left untouched and the option to use or not use localized
Fwd/Re is available there.

Hi,
the same applies for 3.26.0+, that's why this plea exists.

That's what added the change above, yes.

Well, those are two different things (also see below). The "composer-
use-localized-fwd-re" bool option is there to let Evolution know that
it should use/add the localized version, as specified by the
translator, of the Fwd/Re prefix when creating a new forward or reply
message (aka when Ctrl+F/Ctrl+R is pressed in the Mail view).

> And I don't understand why it's up to translators to define a

Translators cannot fill "composer-localized-re", translators can only
define what the prefix might be in their language (which happened for
3.26.0, by tagging the strings for translation). The "composer-
localized-re" is to contain all the prefixes the user receives messages
with, thus for example some in German, Czech, whatever. It would not
make sense to need from every translator to define all possible
prefixes for all known languages.

The options look similar, but they are not the same.

I hope it makes it clearer.

[evolution] String freeze break plea for gnome-3-26

2017-10-13 Thread Milan Crha
Hello,
during 3.25 development cycle I made a change for [1], where I marked
Fwd and Re attributions for translation, as requested by the reporter.
What I didn't realize at that moment was that people in
internationalized environments might have problem with it (not talking
that the "Re" is part of RFC, which I missed completely). It stroke
shortly after those users begun to use 3.26 in locale which had
translated those strings. It resulted in bug [2].

I just committed a fix for it for 3.27.1 [3], but I'd like to add the
change also for 3.26.2. The original change contains also UI changes,
because I added a checkbox for it into the Composer Preferences, but
I'd like to simplify the change for 3.26 and include only translatable
strings in GSettings [4]. The default value for the option is not to
use translated Fwd/Re, which will fix it for majority of the users and
those whom prefer the translated strings can change the values of the
option manually or wait for 3.28.0.

I believe that regular users access GSettings/DConf only when told to
do it, thus these two strings [4] not being translated should not cause
any significant harm, especially in compare of the issue itself.

Thanks and bye,
Milan

[evolution] gnome-3-22 String freeze break plea

2017-01-17 Thread Milan Crha
Hello,
I'd like to commit a change for bug:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=776391
also into the gnome-322, but as the Evolution localized also GSettings
keys, then it breaks the string freeze policy. As mentioned, the new
translatable strings are only for the GSettings keys, thus shown only
in the dconf-editor or such tool, where users may not usually want to
go, thus I think it's pretty safe to make the change. The added option
is supposed to be hidden, it's not anywhere in the UI and is only for
the developers, but influences how the Evolution behaves for regular
users, in a not so great way. That's the main reason why I'd like to
commit also to the stable branch.

The added strings are:
 <_summary>Enable special WebKit developer features
<_description>The change of this option requires restart of the
Evolution.

I plan to make the final 3.22.5 Evolution release on February 13th.
Thanks and bye,
Milan

ouch, I knew I forgot something. I did know that I'm adding new
strings, I even know that I should ask first, but then I completely
forgot of it when committing to master and I just blindly committed it
to the stable branch as well. I'm sorry for that.

I'm CC'ing the relevant parties and doing the right thing now:

I'd like to ask for a string freeze break in the gnome-3-22 branch for
the evolution-data-server, where I made a change for [bug #771547]
"Internal Google OAuth2 authentication fails with expired token". The
change is somewhat important, because it fixes broken behaviour in
OAuth2 Google tokens handling. I added couple error messages,
translated (quoted above), which can show up in a user interface,
though only in a very very very rare cases, like when users manually
edit or remove the secrets in the seahorse. I didn't want to add
strings without being marked for translation (and diverge from git
master), thus I'd rather left them untranslated. I know this is pretty
late, quite close before the 3.22.1 release, but I hope you'll still
understand the importance of the change.

Let me apologize once again for my failure in the string freeze break
approval procedure, it really wasn't intentional.

[Evolution] Hard code freeze break approval plea

2016-03-14 Thread Milan Crha
Hello,
I'd like to ask for a hard code freeze break for the evolution, to
include a patch for bug [763631]. It turned out that some change in
gtk+ (3.19.11 is affected, 3.18.6 is not) caused a break in the
evolution's Mail view's Folder->Subscriptions dialog, which could cause
crashes and didn't allow users to see their subscribed folders for a
mail account. The bug contains a simple fix which works for both gtk+
versions and I'd like to have it included in the 3.20.0 release of the
Evolution.

I received the bug report after I made a release today, thus this
requires the approval process.
Thanks and bye,

[Evolution] UI/Feature freeze break approval plea for 3.19.91

2016-02-19 Thread Milan Crha
Hello,
I'd like to ask for a Feature Freeze break approval, together with a UI
Freeze break approval and, if accepted, I'd also announce a new strings
in the evolution, all for bug [761301], which adds an option to "Create
events, memos and tasks as Private by default" (that's also the added
string, once with a mnemonic, another time without it). The option can
be found in Edit->Preferences->Calendar and Tasks->General tab, in a
newly added section Miscellaneous, as the last section there.

It's pretty simple change in the code, and UI, but can improve
usability for users where privacy of this kind matters.

Thanks and bye,

[evolution-data-server] Hard code freeze break approval plea

2015-09-16 Thread Milan Crha
Hello,
as is described in bug:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=755075

a recent change in GLib 2.45.8
https://git.gnome.org/browse/glib/commit/?id=00933dfc9cc525963c6833d3

broke evolution-data-server settings save/load for mail accounts.

The reason is that the evolution-data-server uses a hack to copy
GParamSpec structure, while the GLib change uses private structure
member, which was not properly copied, thus the code failed to notice
the changes in GObject properties.

There is a fix available for the evolution-data-server, attached in the
above bug report, which fixes the evolution-data-server side.

I'd like to ask for an approval to commit it before the 3.18.0, because
the bug report is a blocker for the evolution-data-server release.
Either that, or revert the change in GLib, but fixing the evolution-
data-server feels more correct.
Thanks and bye,
Milan

Evolution - string/UI freeze break approval plea

2015-09-01 Thread Milan Crha
Hello,
in order to provide an application menu for Evolution, attached patch
at bug #675154 [1], I added one new translatable string
"Quick _Reference". All other strings are reused (this one was
required due to a mnemonic clash with a "_Quit" string).

Could I commit this to git master, please?

I think it would be nice to have this finally done for 3.18.0. If you
consider application menus part of UI, then I ask also for a UI freeze
break.
Bye,
Milan

P.S.: I'm sorry to provide a fix for this thing so late in the release
cycle, it made it upper in my ToDo list only recently.

[Evolution] String/UI freeze break request for gnome-3-16

2015-06-04 Thread Milan Crha
Hello,
I just committed a change into git master of evolution for:
Follow GNOME notification settings under gnome-shell
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=735747
I was told that users of GNOME 3.16 are confused with the way evolution
notifies the users and that it doesn't follow their preference as set
in Notifications.

I added one localized string Open _GNOME Notification settings, thus
I cannot simply commit it also to the gnome-3-16 branch, the same as
Edit-Plugins-Mail Notification-Configuration tab looks differently
in GNOME, most of the options were hidden and a button with the above
caption is shown instead.

Can I commit the same change with the added string into the evolution's
gnome-3-16 branch, please?
Thanks and bye,
Milan

P.S.: I'm not subscribed to any of the lists, thus please keep me in
the loop when replying. Thanks.

Is it possible to update gtk-doc comments within the hard-code freeze?

2015-03-09 Thread Milan Crha
Hello,
I'm wondering whether I'm able (and allowed) to update gtk-doc
comments, developer help in general, during the hard-code freeze
period. The hard-code freeze looks like an ideal time for such changes
to me.

I would not change any real (in my case C) code, at least not directly
(if there will be required any annotation fixes, then they can
eventually update language bindings and introspection), thus I guess
it should be fine, together with a change of exported gtk-doc sections
and functions and so on.

What do you think, please?

Hi,
I had on mind things like fixing typos in annotations, for example, I
never know whether it's allow none or allow-none. I'm pretty sure
eds evo has plenty of such typos.

 Beyond that, changing doc
comments may break your build (if you manage to confuse gtk-doc
badly), but that seems less likely.

The intention is just the opposite, I want to see what gtk-doc claims
when the documentation is built and fix/address as many warnings as
possible. I rely on it with the annotations too.

[evolution] Plea to break UI freeze

2015-02-17 Thread Milan Crha
Hello,
I'd like to break UI freeze for contributors' patches at [1][2][3].

The first [1] changes UI of the new message composer, shows an
emoticon on the toolbar for the plain text mode, while it used to be
visible only with the HTML mode on.

The second [2] adds support for Unicode smileys, that is to use
Unicode letters for smileys instead of images. The changes UI is only
in
Edit-Preferences-Composer Preferences-General tab, where was added a
new checkbox to enable this option, the same as in composer's Options
menu. It also adds couple new localized strings, namely in GSettings
and in the code, related to the new UI elements and actions.

The third [3] changes UI in the new message composer's 'From' address
picker. I'm not fully satisfied with the proposed change, with the way
it looks in the UI, but I do not expect any major changes too (I'd
prefer to have the extra name/email fields under some expander-like
container, than being always visible).

I would include the patches for [1][2] before the yesterday release,
because the changes look harmless, but I noticed them only after I
made the release.

Could I still commit the patches, please?

 What was/is blocking?

Matthew decided to outsource the usability to GtkFileChooser, but it's
not ready yet for our needs (to open in previously used folder), thus I
want to return back functionality users are used to in Evolution. It's
very rare to attach the same file multiple times, you usually want to
add more files from the same folder. Currently, you are presented with
Recently used items, which is useless, then you need mouse to get to
your album folder, which can be anywhere. I hope you can imagine the
pain for users.

As an example, I cannot imagine loosing option for Always ask me where

(also can be read as not sufficient for Evolution needs), though the
change to be reverted touches translated strings too. These are GConf
schema keys, thus maybe not a big deal anyway?

Please let me know if I can fix usability of Evolution.

If you are wondering, evolution team plans to do a 3.4.4 release in time
of 3.5.90 development release.
Thanks and bye,
Milan

Re: Evolution - string freeze break for gnome-3-4 branch

Could you list the strings here and tell us about how many strings we
 talk?

Hi,
sure. It's only about two options, which used to be in evolution for
ages. The first is from mail/evolution-mail.schemas.in:

/apps/evolution/mail/composer/current_folder
shortComposer load/attach directory/short
longDirectory for loading/attaching files to composer./long

and the second from shell/apps_evolution_shell.schemas.in:

/apps/evolution/shell/file_chooser_folder
shortInitial file chooser folder/short
longInitial folder for GtkFileChooser dialogs./long

Otherwise there is no string (re)addition, nor change.
Bye,
Milan

String freeze break request for gnome-3-4 branch of evolution-ews

2012-06-05 Thread Milan Crha
Hello all,
I would like to ask for a string freeze break in gnome-3-4 branch of
evolution-ews, to be able to commit patch for bug [1], where I changes 1
string, removed one string and added 4 new strings for translation. One
string is an error message when user tries to Check for Supported
Types from Evolution's Edit-Preferences-Mail Accounts-ews
account-Edit-tab Receiving Email, the error reads:
Query for authentication types is not supported
This one is not that important and can be skipped, but the other
changes, also on the same tab, on the left of this button are important,
thus users can choose which authentication method should be used when
connecting to Exchange server. The other new strings are NTLM and
Basic, with their descriptions.

As is written in the bug [1], libsoup fixed its bug about using Basic
authentication when NTLM fails [2] before its 2.37.91 release, which
makes evolution-ews unusable for Exchange servers which support only
Basic authentication. This fix and need of change on evolution-ews side
wasn't noticed soon enough, before string freeze, unfortunately.
Thanks and bye,
Milan

evolution-ews does not even have its gnome-3-4 branch listed on
 http://l10n.gnome.org/module/evolution-ews/ in master the only
language with 100% translation coverage is Spanish.
Translation Coordination Team approval 1 out of 2 in case others really
expect the Coordination Team to decide here...

Do you mean that I'm technically safe to commit?

Your message implies that there are more 3.4.x releases planned though,
 right?

Yes, there will be at least 3.4.3 release of it, maybe also 3.4.4, but
it depends whether any important issue will be found or not.
