Plasma 6.1 and 6.2 release schedule proposal

https://calendar.google.com/calendar/u/0?cid=MDMxZ2tncWcxaGpmOGxjbWowZW0xZDJzajhAZ3JvdXAuY2FsZW5kYXIuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbQ

I've filled in dates on this calendar with the remaining 6.1 release
dates and proposed 6.2 release dates using the normal 4 monthly
release cycle

The main action happens around September, pic attached. We have repo
and soft feature freeze 29 August, 6.2 beta 12 september, 6.2 Tars on
3 October to be released 8 October. That means 6.1.5 and 6.2 beta
happen during Akademy.

Yay or nay?

(Note I'm away for the next two weeks.)

Release team blog

2024-03-14 Thread Jonathan Riddell
We now have a new https://blogs.kde.org

The release team folks make occasional releases of bits which are
communally maintained or where the maintainer isn't very interested in
the release process, e.g. I've just been asked by Laurent to make a
release of Ruqola.

Currently I put those release announcements on my personal blog which
has the nice effect of making me look more important than I am but it
seems like not the most suitable place for it.

Should I set up a blog on blogs.kde.org for releases of communally
maintained software? Keeping Plasma, Frameworks and Gear on kde.org
of course.

Can you put them in a common package that both libraries depend on?

Having two translations for the same repo with the same strings would
likely cause more effort for translators.

As discussed on Matrix our assumption is that Plasma 5 and 6 aren't
packaged together, a single version of Plasma should be packaged only with
the same version.

I've bumped the soversions in libksysguard now. (I'll look at doing the
KFification for kuserfeedback too.)

I've also release noted that ksysguard the app is dead and should be
removed from distros, it hasn't been released for over 2 years and hasn't
been ported.

KDSOAP WS-Discovery Client 0.3.0

2023-11-07 Thread Jonathan Riddell
https://jriddell.org/2023/11/07/kdsoap-ws-discovery-client-0-3-0/

This project is trying to create a WS-Discovery client library based on the
KDSoap
library.

The name is short for Klarälvdalens Datakonsult AB Simple Object Access
Protocol Web Services Addressing Discovery Client

It is used by the SMB KIO worker from kio-extras.

kio-extras will have two releases as part of KDE’s 6th Megarelease, one for
Qt 5 and one for Qt 6. Distros should build and ship both versions of
kio-extras but the Qt5 build should use an internal static copy of
kdsoap-ws-discovery-client so does not need to be built separately. The Qt
6 build of kio-extras does need this external build of
kdsoap-ws-discovery-client. Distros will need an up to date copy of KDSoap
library https://github.com/KDAB/KDSoap/tags.

It needs me for Plasma, Albert for Gear and me and Paul are currently doing
the announcement stuff.

I don't know who is planning to do the Frameworks release, nominally it's
David E, Alex L and Nico F but I've failed to get any replies to my
questions about it. I'm happy to do the Frameworks release or maybe those
three will, I've no idea.

I'm available all day on Wednesday.

Yes we can also just tell distros to build it twice and they will pick
their own source package name for the different builds. If that's what we
want them to do we should release note it. Is there a release notes page

Phonon does nifty build things to built it for both Qt 5 and 6 at the same
time from the same tar, this is cool so if you can recreate it then go
ahead. But it might be easier to just release them separately.

KDE 6 Releases dependencies

2023-11-01 Thread Jonathan Riddell
We have various dependencies needed for the forthcoming alpha release.
It's not vital they all have releases in time for the alpha, we can expect
distros to just make their own git exports as needed, but it would be nice
to have releases.

plasma-wayland-protocols - last releases in January I believe this needs an
update. Aleix usually makes there releases. No Qt5 faff needed.
https://invent.kde.org/libraries/plasma-wayland-protocols

libqaccessibilityclient
https://invent.kde.org/libraries/libqaccessibilityclient
I made the most recent release of this in 2019 (amazing what one is
sometimes), I think it's ready to go for a Qt 6 release, it's used by kwin
and kmag which have both been ported to Qt 6 so no Qt 5 release needed.

polkit-qt-1
https://invent.kde.org/libraries/polkit-qt-1

Last released in 2021 by Heiko it builds fine from master with
-DQT_MAJOR_VERSION=6. Distros will need both a Qt 5 and Qt 6 build so I
propose to make a new release for Qt 6 and another one called polkit-qt5-1
with the same contents for Qt 5 builds.

phonon
https://invent.kde.org/libraries/phonon/
4.11.1 released 2019 by Harald
https://community.kde.org/Phonon/Releases/Core
master now builds both Qt 5 and 6 fine so I propose just making a 4.12.0
release

phonon-vlc
https://invent.kde.org/libraries/phonon-vlc
0.11.3 released by Harald in 2021.
https://community.kde.org/Phonon/Releases/VLC/0.11.3
master now builds both Qt 5 and 6 fine so I propose just making a 0.12
release (or be bold and call it 1.0).

phonon-gstreamer
https://invent.kde.org/libraries/phonon-gstreamer
4.10.0 released in 2019 by Harald. it has a Qt 6 port by Montel but I've
not tried it (in KDE neon).
https://community.kde.org/Phonon/Releases/GStreamer/4.9.1
It's not the recommended backend, does anyone still use it?

kuserfeedback
Last released 1.2 by me (amazing what one is again)
Builds Qt 5 by default and 6 with -DQT_MAJOR_VERSION=6
Distros need both Qt 5 and 6 builds although I think Qt 5 is only for
ruqola now so possibly that can be dropped or I can make a final Qt 5
release with a renamed tar.
It has been requested to add it to frameworks so hopefully that can happen

Any others I've missed?

Jonathan

KDE Gear Qt 5 deps

2023-11-01 Thread Jonathan Riddell
There's a couple libraries that distros need to build both Qt 5 and Qt 6
versions of because they have apps which use both.

libkgapi still needs a Qt 5 version for kio-gdrive and a Qt 6 version for
pim bits.

libkcddb needs a Qt 5 version for k3b and a Qt 6 version for kio-audiocd.

So I propose to make standalone releases of the Qt 5 versions using the
names libkgapi5 and libkcddb5 which distros can pick once when they move
their packaging to Qt 6 bits.

How does that sound? Are there any more such cases?

Frameworks 6 alpha

2023-10-31 Thread Jonathan Riddell
We chatted about the alpha release due next Wednesday in the Frameworks
meeting today.

>From my notes:

- Frameworks would like do be part of this release

- Nico F, Alex S, David E are release spods

- There's not been any work on doing the tooling. There's a desire to move
to releaseme for tooling. Jonathan uses this plus a load of supporting
scripts for Plasma and will look at adapting that for Frameworks and come
up with a proposal

- Plasma would like to take over release of plasma-framework, kwayland and
kactivities and that presumably means also kactivities-stats. There was
discussion on the problem of moving the gitlab entries for this while 5
releases are still ongoing so it's probably best to just leave that for now.

- oxygen-icons5 tar should be renamed oxygen-icons (again probably leave
gitlab repo renaming until later)
- We didn't discuss it but kirigami2 tar should also be renamed to kirigami

Does that seem right?

Anything else?

Re: Suggestion to drop ktp from KDE Gear

2023-06-22 Thread Jonathan Riddell
The distros don't want it, the authors don't want it, the Telepathy project
is bitrotting and has had no part of it released in over 2 years.
Sometimes you just need to be like Elsa and say Let it Go

Suggestion to drop ktp from KDE Gear

2023-06-21 Thread Jonathan Riddell
I'd like to suggest dropping ktp packages from the next KDE Gear release.
Telepathy upstream is unmaintained, KTP is unmaintained and discussions
with one of the original authors says it should be dropped.

Modules we release are:
ktp-accounts-kcm
ktp-approver
ktp-auth-handler
ktp-call-ui
ktp-common-internals
ktp-contact-list
ktp-contact-runner
ktp-desktop-applets
ktp-filetransfer-handler
ktp-kded-module
ktp-send-file
ktp-text-ui

I don't have a problem with tags for tars being made publicly available
