Re: Thoughts on KDE Gear 23.08.5?

2023-12-07 Thread Justin Zobel
As you mentioned, it's hard to predict what will happen, so I think
it's fine to do releases as is needed. If a serious bug-fix lands, it
can be discussed at that time and a release made if necessary.

Maybe a release team on Invent, this way it can be used for the Mega
Release and future release related tracking.

We don't particularly have a good team to put a project in for
this, is this something you foresee needing many times more in the
future?

No it's just for this one megarelease

Isn't this going to cause distributions all sorts of pain as package
managers are going to assume 23.08 > 5.80 and refuse to update?

Fedora has an epoch variable to cater for situations like this. I
imagine most other distributions have something similar.

The 23.08 would be upgraded to 1:5.80.x.

Any issues?

Plasma depends on kexiv in Gear so Gear would need to be before Plasma.

Beta 1 is during Qt World Summit that is not ideal but I guess doable?

I'll answer to this email with a few other emails things i thing we have to
discuss to try to organize the discusion earlier.

Do we want common times for dependency/feature/string freezes for all the 3
products or different for each of them?

I have no particular opinion.

I'd say that by nature KF needs to freeze before Plasma & Apps.

I don't think there's any difference between apps and Plasma.

I'll include the Plasma and Frameworks lists JIC.

Re: KDE Gear "6.0" status update: all 40 games & 2 libs now Qt6-only in master

2023-10-01 Thread Justin Zobel
Great work Friedrich! Thank you for this. I will start packaging more of
the KDE Games in my Fedora Copr in preparation for the transition to Qt6.

Hi,

just a quick heads-up to keep more people in the loop:

all the 40 game apps & 2 game libs covered by KDE Gear starting today are now
Qt6-only in their master branches. And thus can/will be released based on Qt6/
KF6 in the KDE Gear "6.0" 24.02 release.

So the section "Games" can be checked off WRT Qt6 porting for KDE Gear.

For libkdegames I plan to use the window of opportunity with API/ABI changes
to consolidate some things, e.g.
* Rename Kg* classes to KGame*, to iron out some historic artifacts
   https://invent.kde.org/games/libkdegames/-/merge_requests/30
* Split-off QWidgets API into separate library,
to prepare more QML work in the years to come

Re: KHealthCertificate in Gear

I would certainly prefer it go into Frameworks than Gear as I think Gear
should be only applications. It's odd enough that Plasma depends on
kexiv and that's in Gear.

Hi,

it looks like we missed KHealthCertificate (https://invent.kde.org/pim/
khealthcertificate) when dissolving Mobile Gear, and it's currently not
covered by automated releases. This went unnoticed as it hasn't gotten
API
changes recently, only a few data updates, but I'd like to fix this as
we
have things depending on it.

So I'd suggest we include it in 23.12, assuming we don't want to add
things
to the 23.08 series at this point.

Seems it was done on purpose?

https://invent.kde.org/teams/plasma-mobile/issues/-/issues/186

I don't particularly mind if it goes in KDE Gear but whoever wrote that
table seems that decided it's not what was wanted for KHealthCertificate?

oh, interesting... why/how was that decided?

I've no idea :D

Devin Lin (cc-ed) wrote that issue, so maybe he knows?

Cheers,

I don't remember being involved
in that, and I'm kinda the maintainer, and responsible for one of its main
consumers...

It does seem to be based on the assumption of moving to KF instead of Gear
though, which isn't really necessary nor intended here.

Volker

The more items in gear the easier it is for packagers to keep everything
in sync. +1 from me.

Can you please add git-master as a version for kio-extras on Bugzilla

For some reason, the reply emails aren't coming to me. I have seen the
replies though on the mailing list web interface. Can we add it back
in if it compiles and works as it is carried in Fedora but hasn't been
updated for a while due to the lack of tarballs.
