I can't really give you much information but our club is using a (digital)
MSF-5000 on 2m and it works great. Of course it replaced a very tired GE
Master Pro so almost anything would have been an improvement. I can't
comment on the price as ours was donated by a local company that went to an
800mhz trunking system.

It takes a computer with the Motorola programming s/w and an interface box
and cable to do almost anything to the repeater - fortunately we have a
member with the necessary skills and equipment. We use an Scom 7K
controller on it which was simple to interface. There's a 25 pin DB on the
MSF with all the necessary connections.

Sometimes it is needed. While the signals are on the same cable after the
duplexer there is a great ammount of rejection by the duplexers. There is
several feet of coax between some duplexers and the receivers. It is this
point where the desense by the coax can hapen.
After the coax going to the antenna is a good distance a from the coax
going from the duplexer to the reciever there will be enough free space
loss there will not be any desense.

RE: [Repeater-Builder] Corner Reflectors and UHF Repeaters

2003-11-12 Thread rob . vance
Your obviously going to get a very modified coverage pattern with a F/B
ratio of 5 to 10 dB better than a typical yagi, but about the same forward
gain as a yagi antenna. I presume you need or desire the coverage pattern,
or need the F/B ratio for protection, or perhaps you have the antenna and
are looking for a use. Should be no problems in full duplex service as long
as the unit isn't damaged; depending on reflector material (solid metal pan
vs. multiple elements or wire mesh screen) you could have some wind/ice
loading considerations to keep in mind.
I use 10 dB yagi antennas on some UHF full duplex link antenna systems with
zero problems, I don't see where a corner reflector should be any different,
other than possibly F/B ratio. Test it out, put some power in the antenna
and run some local tests !!

Does anyone use or have tried to use a corner reflector on a UHF
machine? Anyone care to share their thought on the use of this
antenna. I know some antennas work great in normal operation, but when
they are put into duplex service they croak. Just not sure about corner
reflectors.

I have never seen this. But I do have an acquaintance
who wondered why all the jumpers on his duplexers made
noise when he touched them. Of course failing to
solder the shield in the PL259's had something to do
with that.

Never said it was. Sometimes people can't afford it
though. If I was doing a building-top installation
with a short feed-line run, had a limited budget, and
had to choose how to spend my money, I'd put more into
the antenna and use RG213 before I would skimp on the
antenna just to buy 30' of heliax.

Actually, I've found that what is most important in braided-shield coax used in
duplex service (between duplexer & antenna) is not whether it's single or
double-shielded, but whether it's silver-plated. If moisture gets to the
copper braid, it can generate a lot of noise; the silver braid seems to be more
immune to this.

As it turns out, most double-shielded coax is silver-plated while
single-shielded silver-plated coax is rare, so there is a strong perceived
correlation between the amount of shielding & susceptibility to desense for
this reason.

The corner reflector is an excellant quadrant coverage antenna. I have
but one caution - if
you plan on using it where it will be subjected to high wind or icing
conditions, you will need
one rated for that type of service. Expect no duplex service problems.

H-- what about the case where your single shielded cable runs
past a high power paging antenna, or your own repeater tx antenna?
Seems that leakage INTO your receive antenna coax could be a
consideration here.

About RG213, I've witnessed desense in a duplex situation when using
this cable while it is being flexed. Bottom line-- using solid
shield coax is almost never a bad choice.

[Repeater-Builder] want CAT RBS-1000 board info

2003-11-12 Thread skipp025
Hello there,

Anyone got a copy of the manual/paperwork for the early CAT RBS-1000
board? Not the current RLS-1000B or the mid era RLS-1000 units.

The RBS-1000 is the first (analog) Remote Link Switch/board made by
the CAT Controller people. It is a purely analog type of link board vs
the RLS versions which went to micro processor control.

All I really need is the operation paperwork, but anything you have
would be great. CAT doesn't have a copy of the operations manual in
their web archives, just the newer (current) uP version which is the
RLS series.

If you have any RBS version paperwork please contact me direct.

thanks

I would still say not for any length. 100' of 9913 has about 1.5 dB loss
on 2M, which is getting close to the high end of tolerance for that
length. At UHF, it's more like 3dB, and if you're only 100', the height
won't be enough to compensate for the loss, unless you're on a buiding
top, and even then, going to hardline will be a NOTICABLE improvement.
My UHF rptr (on a rooftop) has abt an 80-90' run. I went from 1/2" to
7/8"-just that difference was astounding.

2003-11-12 Thread Dan Hancock
Why do you believe that double shielded cable is
necessary for an antenna run? What are you trying to
keep the signal out of?
Inter-cabling within the cabinet needs to be double
shielded to prevent interaction between the TX and RX
portions, but once those signals are merged at the
output of the duplexer they are both on the same
feedline anyway and double shielding is expensive and
unnecessary.
For short antenns runs, RG213 is actually an excellent
choice.
The only exception to this is if there is no duplexer
being used and the repeater is operating on split
antennas with parallel feedline runs, then 100%
shielding is necessary. Under these circumstances
LDM400 or 9913 would be a good choice if heliax is not
available affordably since the cables are not being
used in a duplex setting.
