[Repeater-Builder] Slightly off topic

2003-12-30 Thread Rich Poczkalski
Apologies to Kevin and the group for the off-topic post.

Does anyone happen to know what the subband 144.30-144.50
was used for before it was used for the new OSCAR subband?

Thanks for the bandwidth.
73,

Rich

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: Impedance Matching of Power Amplifiers

2003-12-30 Thread James

The worst one ... TE systems. I have even had Motorola PA's that have
decided that they do not like a particular antenna system as well as
some TPL stuff. (Most of the problems I have could probably been
solved by cutting the feedline to the antenna to make it match to
eliminate the reactences that show up with high input power ... very
impractical since most feedlines have little to no extra length to fuss
with).

[Repeater-Builder] Re: Impedance Matching of Power Amplifiers

2003-12-30 Thread skipp025
Hi James,

I've found many TE amps to be of better quality
when compared to other brands. Since they used
conventional layouts, reactance problems related
to the amp can possibly be corrected.

The obvious answer is a case by case examination.

cheers

[Repeater-Builder] Looking for connectors

2003-12-30 Thread Jeff DePolo WN3A

Anyone have a surplus, or can refer me to a source, of *75 ohm* type N
connectors? I've run my stock dry and need a few. I can use some for RG59
as well as RG11 (either CATV type RG11 or regular RG11). The only place
I've found any in stock is Pasternak and they're $12 each which is kind of
steep. I could use a few or a few dozen depending on the price.

Come to think of it, I could use a few for LDF4-75A too if anyone has any.

Thanks.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: Impedance Matching of Power Amplifiers

2003-12-30 Thread Matt Krick
My thoughts They may be incorrect,

If a duplexer was constructed so that the Inner conductor to outer
conductor ratio was constant the length to the tunning rod, you wouldnt
have the swr dips. Sure the main part is the proper ratio, but none of
the designs take into account the evil impedence mismatch on the
trombone at the bottom of the rod. So while the top half of the cavity
is 50 ohm, the botom is somewhere between 60 and 85 ohms. Most likely 75
ohm considering materials avalible. The solution of using a solid
threaded rod is one way to circumvent this problem, but the materials
avalible (half inch) limit the cavity to a relitivly low Q factor.

Correction:

That should have read 1/2 wavelength.

Kevin

Bird has a table that can be utilized, but you just need to insure you add or
remove 1/4 wavelength of cable; considering the coaxial length of the sampler.

2003-12-30 Thread Russ Stafford

If ever think about running a circulator?
It would solve this.

  Impedance Matching of Power Amplifiers
The worst one ... TE systems. I have even had Motorola
PA's that have decided that they do not like a particular antenna system as
well as some TPL stuff. (Most of the problems I have could probably been
solved by cutting the feedline to the antenna to make it match to eliminate
the reactences that show up with high input power ... very impractical since
most feedlines have little to no extra length to fuss with).skipp025

  James,

What type of power amplifier have you
used which had/has problems matching 50
ohms systems?

Did you even try to first adjust the
duplexer tx cavities for min reflected
power into a proper 50 ohm termination
at the rated power?

have great success with line matchers.

I also have used Airpax devices with great results.

Aiprax (http:www.airpaxtsp.com/tspsite/6700.html) is a very nice thermo
switch. Web site explains all about it. Been using them for years. The size
of a
T0-220 case, handles 1 amp although I prefer driving a fan relay then I can
switch anything. Operating temps start out at 40 deg C and work up to 130
deg C
in 5 deg steps. Purchase the temp you want. I use P/N 67F040 (40 deg C). The
F stands for fan or normally open and the L is normally closed. Stocked
at
Sager Electronics 508 947-. Sager #AIT67F040. Cost $6.85. I ordered
mine
thru Inagitron Sales, Langhorn, Pa 215 250-7778. Drill one 4/40 hole in
heatsink and install with some temp grease. Airpax makes a lot of different
temp
control devices.

[Repeater-Builder] Plotting Audio Frequency Response

2003-12-30 Thread ve7fet
Ok, I've looked high and low... and come up short.

I am curious to see just how good/bad the audio frequency response of
my repeaters are. The problem is that I can't figure out a good way
to go about doing it.

I'm looking for information on how and what to use to check/plot the
audio response through the repeater. I would also like some info on
plotting the audio response independently of receivers and
transmitters. A nice swept response plot is desired... I don't really
want to plot it manually. :)

The rest of the system is quite happy... so I figure it is time to
punish myself and start tweaking the audio side to make them sound
their best. Unfortunately, the audio side is something I know little
about.

Your help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Lee

This is true, as a former BIG M guy I've sourced
my share of problems out. But there are solutions
to most of them. If you use the Z-match device,
after alignment into a proper 50 ohm termination
the duplexer cavities should then be adjusted for
min reflected power as described in my previous
post(s).

I agree with this as long as cabling lengths of any temporary SWR or
wattmeter are taken into consideration. This is why I have permanently
mounted (Bird) samplers mounted in my more sophisticated repeater
installations. This way I don't have to worry about things changing
when I need to tune for maximum smoke. Bird has a table that can be
utilized, but you just need to insure you add or remove 1/4 wavelength
of cable; considering the coaxial length of the sampler. This is also
the reason cheap circuit board samplers/swr meters shouldn't be used in
serious repeater installations.

cheers Kevin, hope to see you at Dayton again (04)

And you as well

[Repeater-Builder] reflected power in amplifiers.

2003-12-30 Thread skipp025
re: the referenced web page.

The text on the web page is not an uncommon example,
but any reflected or unwanted power comming back to
the power amplifier will cause much grief, reactance
is just one player in the mix.

The key is the mentioned circulator, which prevents
(do a degree) and protects from a multitude of sins.

cheers
