[Repeater-Builder] Help - GE Mastr II repeater documentation

2004-01-29 Thread Derek B. McIntyre
I have acquired a GE Mastr II repeater station for VHF, probably
150.8 to 174 MHz but not sure. Data tags are missing. The repeater
was crystalled for 155 something TX and 158 RX. I have several
questions about this unit.

1. I have been running a Mastr Exec II converted mobile for repeater
use on the ham band. I wasn't sure if the same crystals in the Exec
II channel elements would work in the Mastr II ICOM's so I tried it
anyway, and it works, but wondering if it's proper and if I need to
send the ICOM's to Bomar and get them to do it the "right way" since
they do the temp compensation when cutting the new crystal.

2. The exciter is a PLL exciter, so I have been told. It has no RF
adjustments on it except for one trimmer cap next to the RF output
transistors. What is this for?

3. The transmitter and PA ran fine (the PA is a 110 watt or so)
without any adjustments. The receiver never would quiet down. No
matter how many times I ran the alignment procedure, I never could
get better than about 20 microvolts or thereabouts. I took the
shield off the back end of the oscillator/mixer board and re-aligned,
this time with 0.5 uV for full quieting (about 0.35 uV for 12 dB
SINAD) ...I am assuming this is typical? Why would taking the shield
off the back of the board make for better RX sensitivity, or is there
something I am overlooking (like a short to ground or something)?

4. Some of the trimmer caps in the oscillator board are extremely
touchy. Is this normal?

5. I can find alignment instructions for the front end on the web,
but haven't been able to locate how to adjust the I.F. and mixer. I
simply SINAD everything but I know it's not the right way. Where can
I find info on this? Can I use Exec II tune-up instructions?

6. (sorry this is so long but I am new to this repeater...) There is
some sort of controller with this unit. It has a local speaker,
volume knob, CS/NORM/PTT/Disable switches on the front (no plug-in
cards). Behind this is a small board which contains numerous jumper
settings and two or three small pots. I have figured out that by
changing some jumper settings you can alter the hang time but have no
idea what the rest of them do. Where can I get documentation for
this "station control board?"

7. Who is a supplier of service manuals for this repeater? I need
one if I plan to run this thing right on.

Thanks for the help in advance,
Derek KC4FWC

Re: [Repeater-Builder] 2m quad

2004-01-29 Thread Al Allum

Hi Sandeep,

I have made a 3 element quad for 2 meters.  I used
3/4 inch PVC (stronger then 1/2 inch) for the mast and got two of those
fiberglass flag poles that you put on bicycles to use as the spreaders.
Just drilled apposing holes to hold the spreaders and used epoxy to secure
them.  I used the dimensions from the ARRL handbook.  Copper wire is
the best.  You will make it either vertically polarized by feeding in on
the side in the middle or horizontally polarized by feeding it in the middle on
the bottom. For the driven element I left about 1 1/2 inches extra on each leg
which I turned up at a 90 degree angle and used it to tune the antenna to the
frequency I wanted by attaching the coax  higher or lower on the two ends.
Have fun.

2004-01-29 Thread Russ Stafford
We have 18 of the Hi-Pro R-1's in service on the Metro-Comm, INC repeater
network. Two of them are two meters. We use the Waycom duplexers (now TX/RX)
they are 100 DB at 600 Hz the combo works just fine and has for years.

These are built to order. It might be worth a phone call to see if they will
build you a ham band version.

The dualbander uses an extra-heavy-duty pipe - if you go thie route you might
want to order the db314 pipe and then delete the pipes from the two antennas
you want to mount on it.

[Repeater-Builder] VHF (vocom) Power Amplifier Retuning

2004-01-29 Thread skipp025
A subject near and dear to my heart...

I can help you through some of the amplifier
questions you have. It would be much easier
to get a handle on the retune if you could
or would share the diagram(s) and you received
from Vocom. It would make the process much
easier.

Also... there is a yahoo rfamplifiers group,
which I'll be cross posting to. You can receive
your answers by Email, by reading the replies
on the:

If the repeater builders group wants to see

Re: [Repeater-Builder] 2m quad

2004-01-29 Thread Virden Clark Beckman
Conducting boom is ok but not spreaders, if you are a purist you will
find feedpoint impedance ranging from 75 to 300 ohms - use some 1/2
electrical wave length of inversion coax to return to 52 ohm for your
transmitter to enjoy.

Funny. I've had 7 of those "ham toothpicks" in the air for over 10 years at
7300 feet in the Rockies thru ice and snow with nary a broken fiberglas hair.
Guess it's all in the way you mount them. All side mounts have an extra PVC
upper support and the one top mounted at 40 feet has weathered over 15 years
with
no problems.

I'd expect the metal boom to have *some* effect on the overall design...
good or bad.
Of course, yagi's are made both ways all the time -- might hunt up some
of those & see what kinds of differences are built in, and adjust from
there.

Sounds like a great experimental project ! Good Luck.

Larry, your post leads me to believe that there may be some
misunderstanding about the DB dual band antenna. You'd have to use a
splitter or separate feedlines for it also, since it is totally
separate antennas mounted on one mast, just like you are proposing to
do... :))

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Dual Band Antenna's?

2004-01-29 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
The antenna looks great, and the price is certainly reasonable (we're a
Government agency, not a ham group on a tight budget.) We just need a dual
band 2-Meter / 440-MHz antenna for one remaining available support that
will be stout, like a Stationmaster or similar commercial grade antenna.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like they have a ham band version. Perhaps
we should just buy two - similar ham band version 2M and 440 MHz folded
dipole type repeater antennas and stack the UHF above the 2M ant and use a
M/A-COM splitter or similar.

Thanks,
Larry

You could try this antenna.
http://www.decibelproducts.com/productnotebookantenna2.asp?Param=ModelNumber
&Model=DB314-A&freq=on We used this antenna at my work for our
interoperability initiative. You won't like the price though as it was
over $1000.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: Dual Band Antenna's?

2004-01-29 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
The DB antenna looks great - unfortunately, we need a ham band version
2-Meter/440 MHz for a Government Emergency Operations Center. It's
beginning to look like we'll just have to go with separate antennas and a
M/A-COM splitter, like their CC-150-450 unit. We don't have time to try to
"modify" some commercial band gear on this project.

Thanks to all for the suggestions,
Larry

It has been done and it must be side braced, the original build from DB
uses a much larger base mast for the high band segment which holds the
uhf unit above. I didn't think this was still being built, it is a great
performer - basically you are getting 2 650bux dipoles on a stronger
mast - even if you can't order for the ham band it is not that tough to
move it down by adding some more metal like Derek KC4FWC has done to his
high band set-up. It is worth the 1000 to get the dual band in a safe
tower mounted antenna system, not the ham toothpick you will have to
rebuild in 2 years.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] VOCOM (or VO-COM?) Power Amplifier Retuning

2004-01-29 Thread Maire Company
We have used Vocom amplifiers for may years (UHF) and have been very happy
with them. Get a RMA number and send the unit in. In a very short time you
with get it tuned, any repairs needed, and a cost that will not kill you.
We just got a unit not to long ago on Ebay and had them go over it and are
very happy with the job they did.
The amplifier has been install since we got it back and like the other 6
units we have work fine. We have even sent a unit back to be check and they
could find no troubles and there was only shipping cost.

Hi Group,

I would like the same information for a UHF VOCOM. Took multiple phone
calls and months to get the service manual out of them. What I got was
useless. And I specifically told them I needed instructions to retune it to
the ham band. All I got is what could be considered a "specification for

[Repeater-Builder] Z matchers

EMR makes Z matchers and discounts 25% off list to hams.

The model 6550/Z for UHF ends up $67.50 and the model LB6350/Z for six
meters ends up $78.75 after the discount. Forgot to ask about the VHF high
band (I don't have any repeaters there).
