Yes, you are correct.

But now I have doubts that we actually "built" those

I had to buy the aluminum rod for the elements and
thecoax to make the harness instead of manufacturing it from scratch

[Repeater-Builder] Vertex VXR-7000 battery backup

2005-03-26 Thread Per Molund

We have recently accuired a Vertex VXR-7000 repeater for 70 cm ham
service and planned to hook it up to our site battery backup system (~650
Ah with dedicated charger). However the repeater manual states
Never reapply AC power to the repeater with a discharged
battery connected, as the DC startup current can damage the repeater and
battery. Does anyone know if the repeater trickle charger
can be disabled? The minimal manual included with the repeater doesn't
tell.

[Repeater-Builder] Re: 440 4 Pole Antenna

2005-03-26 Thread skipp025

You might want to download and compare the db-408
sheet, available in the same section. The text
includes the coax harness lenghts for the DB
450-470 MHz segements.

Through the years, the commercial antenna versions
of this antenna had some changes... the mount
changed from a tube to the current 1 bent bar
(which appears pretty easy to duplicate).

Charles' article shows the dipole welded to the
mount tube. The early DB versions used pressed
and rivot fits with hose clamp mounts. Might be
easier to press/rivot secure the elements if you
don't have a welder, but Charles method is much
more hardy.

I could snap some pictures of the older vs new
mounts and have Mike make them available. (If
there's any interest in said pictures...)

One yet to be sorted issue is the dipole centering.
Most of the commercial models have the dipole
centered around the mount tube. I have one or
two factory DB versions of these dipole antennas
with the dipole shifted (ie more of the dipole
toward the ground or high side). I'll be
asking a few antenna enginners I know (at IWCE
in April), why the shift done.

cheers,
skipp

Kevin,
Keep up the good work. I think your poll is a good idea.

I was one of those who unsubscribed a few weeks ago when we had a major
outbreak of the Russ-and-Dean show. Couldn't stay away, though, and a
couple of weeks later re-subscribed. You run a good sig.

I believe that Cooktowers is probably a fine company with which to do
business. I recently got a quote from them on an item and it was very fair
and competitive. I plan on doing business with them. That said, I don't
think Dean is generating a lot of business for them here lately.

As far as Russ and his radio station goes, Good luck! You'll need it.
Having been an owner in the late 70's and 80's I came to know the meaning of
Money Pit. Went back to engineering and haven't regretted it.

As far as build goes , yes, a lot of us build repeaters. Of course,
any yoyo with enough money can buy a box and put it up but where is the
satisfaction? A large part of ham radio to me is seeing a need, collecting
the parts, and putting the equipment together to fill that need. Putting a
machine together that works better than a commercial off-the-self one for
ten per cent of the money is challenging and very satisfying to me. I have
always built controllers from scratch, too, thinking that the ready-mades
were cheating somehow. But now they are so cheap it's probably not worth the
hassle to figure out the logic, dig through the data books, make a board,
interface, debug, etc.
IMHO, the Micor and Mastr II receivers are the best repeater receivers
ever made in terms of value. There may be a better receiver made but not for
anywhere near the same money. There are probably enough parts out there to
keep them running another 30+ years and far beyond.

Hang in there.

[Repeater-Builder] Duplexer's Are tuned, Thanks again for the help

2005-03-26 Thread w9mwq

Just wanted to let everyone know that I got the duplexer's tuned this
afternoon. I was from the start in the right direction, you gentleman
led me straight down the path. Only part I missed was reversing the
input and output when aligning up the notch side of the duplexer.
Makes sense after I had it explained why it was not working. In the
end, no decense on the receiver what so-ever, and all the power is not
transferred forward from the transmitter.

Just have to remember, the signal goes one way, and the notch goes the
other, and then it all comes together.

Mathew, I believe this is what you are looking for...

Starting at the antenna port, there are two RG142 cables each 29 1/4

connected to another cavity with a RG142 jumper each 11 7/8 in long

There is no *third can* as referred to above in your post.

Thanks Laryn, I found that they were hooked up ok. I think I was just getting super frustrated when nothing was going right. However the duplexers are tuned. Got them going a little while ago. Was doing everything right, just had the rejection turned around on them, actually did them in revverse of what they should have been. You are right, generally these are a 4 can set, mine is a six can set, not sure why they got the extra set, but they are there, and working excellent now.
