Re: [Repeater-Builder] Strange Desense issue on VHF Quantar
Andy, When you say you "see" this carrier, how are you viewing it? That is, are you watching a spectrum analyzer with a pickup antenna, while the repeater antenna is connected to the duplexer? Is this mystery carrier present all the time, even when the Quantar is not repeating? All of my Quantar service manuals are at my office, so I can't study the possible leakages from the repeater until Tuesday, but I wonder if this mystery carrier is leaking out of the repeater itself. Are ALL shields in place and secured with every screw required? Are all components of your repeater grounded to a known-good station ground? Finally, how much desense are you experiencing, and how are you measuring it? 73, Eric Lemmon WB6FLY azandyca wrote: > I am building a VHF repeater with a Motorola Quantar, and I am finding a > > strange IM/desense issue. Look at the speech files used by the asterisk project. www.asterisk.org. Those should suit your purposes, and I believe that they are not encumbered by copyright. [Repeater-Builder] Strange Desense issue on VHF Quantar
I am buiding a VHF repeater witha Motorola Quantar and am finding a strange IM/Desense issue. Whn I attach an antenna to the system I see a small carrier at +4.5khz from the carrier frequency. I have verified duplexer tuning, tried several anenna and feedline combos, and everything else I can think of to find/eliminate this issue to include changing frequencies and retuning the whole mess. It works fine into the service monitor with no spurious emmissions and no problem, only on the anteanna system do I see this. There are no other emmitters within several miles so it is not a local IM type thing. Has anyone else setting up a VHF quantar seen this sort of issue? Could it be related to the quantar itself with the 600k split? I am using a 6 can BP/BR duplexer and measure over 130dBm of isolation TX-RX... Yahoo! Are you committed to Motorola? or would a good used GE interest you? Either way, contact Scott at repeater-builder at 814-444-9460, weekdays during normal business hours eastern time. Otherwise, do you know anybody at the MSS ? If yes, ask them what they are pulling out of service. A large number of business radio systems have been or are being retired... as an example in this area every single plumber, air conditioning repair, and other business that you would find on a community repeater system are now using cellphones. The local water company didn't bother installing the 2-way radios in the new trucks this time around... the company calls the crew foreman's cellphone. Even the local cab company has decommissioned their voice dispatch system - they are using their radio channel for digital dispatch/automatic vehicle locating and all voice traffic is via cellphones. In short, voice 2-way for small business is a dead market. See what the MSS has available. They may just have a MSR-2000 or a Micor station in the back room gathering dust. Or ask them if they have any decommissioned equipment up at the repeater site(s). The local shop was storing 4 Micor stations in one of their hilltop buildings because they had no space in the back room. If they have nothing, look around on the net. A while back I saw a MSR2000 Repeater for about $600, and a MSF5000 for about $1200. If you buy something like that, do not buy "as is" or "tech special" - spend a little extra and get a warranty. And manuals! A large number of Moto manuals are NLA - no longer available. You don't want something that you can't get docs for.
