Re: [Repeater-Builder] Solar Panel Question
Rod, It's generally not a good idea to run dissimilar solar panels in parallel. However, you can do it safely if you combine their outputs using Schottky diodes. A Schottky diode has an extremely low forward voltage drop, usually around 0.3 volts- less than half that of a typical silicon diode. Use just one controller, which should be rated at least 20 amperes with panels totaling 142 watts. A rule of thumb is to figure a dropout voltage of 10 volts (which varies with the controller) and divide the total panel watts by this number. Your max current at 10 volts will be around 14.2 amperes, well above your controller's rating. Remember that one of the tasks performed by a good solar controller is to shunt all of the excess power produced by the panels, once the batteries are fully charged. 73, Eric Lemmon WB6FLY [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > I just put up a repeater using solar power and my question is this: > > I have one 110 watt panel and one 32 watt panel and a 10 amp > Morningstar solar controller. [Repeater-Builder] Solar Panel Question
I just put up a repeater using solar power and my question is this: I have one 110 watt panel and one 32 watt panel and a 10 amp Morningstar solar controller. Can I wire these two panels together, then go to the controller or run separate wires to the controller or use two controllers? The combined amperage would be less than 10 amps in full light. Kevin, That looks like the one I have, but based on Eric's post, I would be better off getting a 100 watt unit, so we don't have to convert the TLD1703 to work on 144 MHz.
