[Repeater-Builder] "Aftermarket" Moto RSS software documentation

2009-02-01 Thread W. H. Phinizy
Being well aware of Motorola's copyright enforcement vigorousness and
not wishing to trnsgress same, does anyone know of any *aftermarket*
or "public domain" documentaiton or operating notes for the HT600/
P200 and the MT1000 RSS?

Please understand that I am NOT looking for illegitimate copies of
the RSS or the documentation.

Thanks in advance,

Also, any referrals to good sources for aftermarket battery packs for
the above radios would be appreciated.

[Repeater-Builder] CD IDer needed for GR300

2009-02-01 Thread Joe Serocki
I have a GR300 with M120/M10 radios. Seems nice, puts out about 25 watts,
clean.

I need to get an IDer into this repeater. Suggestions on how and where to
get it?

Thanks

[Repeater-Builder] Icom Pan f420 Repeater

2009-02-01 Thread tait700
Hello,
Was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this particular
model of Repeater ?
I am having trouble with the fan control section which i believe is
actuated by the main repeater controller board that also controls the
Audio path between the RX and TX radios.
I have contacted Panther Electronics but have not received any reply
so i assume they do not provide any support for obsolete products.
The contoller board contains 2 555 timer chips along with a selection
of resistors, 2 pots and several transistors which i think might
control the fan timer circuit.
Bypassing this section altogether and wiring directly to the fan
relay mounted on the fan itself brings it into life but i would
prefer to have the original circuit working if possible.
If anyone has any info on this board and how it is supposed to
operate in regards the fan circuit, and also if it alters the Rx
audio signal path between the two transceivers i would be most
appreciative for any help.
A circuit schematic would be really handy or any other info.

All replies gratefully received.

[Repeater-Builder] GE Master II Pa decks

2009-02-01 Thread Randy
Hi group whats the deal with the GE Master II PA decks needing to use a
ferrite isolator with a 50 ohm dummy load and a low pass filter between
the PA and the High Q duplexer. Is this something that most do with
the 75 and 100 w Pa's We just replaced one in a Master II Mobile radio
which lasted for years with no issues. After installing the PA and
doing a tune up the Radio did about 80 watts we set it to 45 watts I
was also told that was not a good thing to do so whats the story on the
PA. I seen where Repeater Builder the Company talks about the 75 or 100
watt PA's in there web site only bening good set to 45 watts or so
anyway so I assume they are setting theres at that level when they do a
Duplex conversion ect making the radio into a repeater. I have read the
information on the website about this but would like some user comments
as well. Also where would one get the needed parts ect to do this Mod.

Joe,

The Communications Specialists model ID-8 is probably the most versatile
unit on the market, but not cheap at $70:

There are many simpler and cheaper units available, but not so easy to

[Repeater-Builder] Repeater - Radio - Receiver Pre-Selector Recommendations

2009-02-01 Thread skipp025
Re: Repeater - Radio - Receiver Pre-Selector Recommendations

I received the following question by direct Email and thought
it might be useful to reply back via the group. There I go
thinking again...

> Do you have any recommendations for a 3 cell pre-selector
> for 150-160 MHz with an insertion loss of around 3 dB ?

Yes and No... the obvious answer.

Each and every application seems to be different so I end up
engineering front end filtering pre-selectors based on a
checklist of requirements mentioned below.

1. Fixed single frequency of operation or x-amount of
   bandwidth required.

It seems to be an advantage for most people to use receiver
cavity type pre-selection to protect a single frequency
receiver. Repeater input frequencies for a time tended to
be placed in one portion of a band with corresponding high
power transmitters place at/in another portion of the band.
But nowadays... all bets are off. Are you feeding one or
more receivers?

2. Adjacent transmitters and their respective frequencies.

Continuing on from above... I now see a lot of very poorly
planned frequency coordinations. In some cases including my
own... the FCC has licensed relatively high powered transmitters
a very short physical and spectral distance from a number of
receiver input frequencies.

I have one location where the FCC generously granted a large
number of repeater transmitter frequencies less than 200KHz
from the receiver input frequencies. Go figure...

Another mountain-top location where a valley floor located
co-channel user 80 miles distant blows 160 watts from a 200
foot tower station master antenna system and quite often takes
out local portables operating on our system.

Both the above examples are clearly serious head scratchers,
which obviously change the pre-selector requirements.

3. The type of antenna or antenna combiner/distribution
   system.

Sometimes you need wide-band antennas and sometimes you want
narrow band antenna performance. In the case of two different
folded dipole layouts... one specs operation from 138-174MHz
while the other brand/type a more conservative 10 MHz segment
of 138-174MHz. No sense making it easy for strong out of band
undesired signals to reach your receiver. Omni or directional
antenna patterns desired..?

4. Options

Do you buy a pre-made pre-selector filter assembly or design
one?

So... in reality there is no off the shelf filter that takes
care of all situations. If you don't have to deal with any
of the commercial world land minds... I do like and generically
use a lot of the DCI filters for out of band protection. I've
even had DCI custom make a number of UHF repeater pre-selectors.

I do see a number of wide-band VHF receiver pre-selectors
(Cellwave, Decibel, Sinclair & Pyramid) but I normally don't
use those as repeater site pre-selectors where I need a lot
of performance for portable (HT) operations. Notice I wrote
"normally"...

The Pyramid BPF-1604 seems to be the type of pre-selector
referenced in the original question.

http://www.pyramidcomm.com/pdf/BPNF/4%20Page%20Filter%20Brochure.pdf

I am a Pyramid Dealer and use a fair number of their various
filter products successfully installing in-band and cross band
SVR-200 mobile vehicle repeaters. It's not super easy to get
a duplex frequency agile receiver to happily live spectrally
and physically next to a 60 watt transmitter.

Otherwise it's a custom design and assembly based on the
specific application. As always... the no free lunch rule
applies. The group here is a great place to ask for ideas...
so do ask and we'll all chime in with free or very low cost
opinions... I can be easily bribed...

cheers

[Repeater-Builder] Re: CD IDer needed for GR300

2009-02-01 Thread skipp025
Hi Joe,

In addition to the suggestions made by others... I like
the N0AXS ID O Matic, which is now selling on Ebay for about
$21.50 and $2.50 shipping

You have to assemble the ID'er from parts, but it's a
through hole part type kit and easy to complete.

You then have to sort through the ability to access and
program the ID'er kit using an RS-232 connection and a
terminal program such as procomm or hyperterm. Since doing
said is not plug and play... sorting out the RS-232 connection
and programming can turn off the "more informal" folks.

Well worth powering up your soldering iron...

But once you get the ID O'Matic going... it's a great
product and a very fair dollar value.
