[Repeater-Builder] Interfacing RLS1000 to Rc210 Controller

2010-08-30 Thread ka2ajh
Good Morning to the Group. I have a new RLS1000 Hub and a RC210 and have read
where Skipp and others have been successful in interfacing the hub with the
controller for more ports, but don't see how the connections are made. Does
Skipp or anyone else have any notes on hooking the two together? Would much
appreciate the information and help.
Thanks in advance.

[Repeater-Builder] Tram 1481 Dual Band UHF/VHF Antenna

2009-08-31 Thread ka2ajh
Hi Guys,
We spent most of yesterday working on a UHF Mastr II Exec. Repeater, we are
using a TRAM 1481 Dual Band Antenna on. This is the high gain 8.3 dB VHF/11.7
UHF. The system uses UHF Repeater, VHF Simplex, and IRLP. The antenna works
very poorly on UHF and much better on VHF. The SWR is about 3-1 on both
frequencies. The antenna is not DC Ground and there is no shorted connectors.
Lack of help prevented us from taking the antenna down and apart at this time.
We ran tests by putting the antenna on a portable and working a fixed base and
again the VHF pinned the meter and the UHF was weak, only a couple of S units
better than the portable rubber duck. Has anyone had a similar problem. I
understand that the antenna is a compromise and not as good as a single band
folded dipole for example, but several of us have these and they work great
except for this one. I am thinking there are enough Tram 1481 out there and
someone may have had the same problem.
Also there has been many posts about the LMR400 used in repeater service. It is
my understanding that the foil type should NEVER be used between duplexers,
from the TX, RX to the Duplexers, but I am not sure about between the duplexer
and the antenna. Comments please!
My friend has the LM400 on the repeater mentioned above and I know it is NOT
the present problem as even on simplex the antenna performance on 440 very poor.

Thanks again an advance for your experiences and thoughts.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Higher Output Exciter

2006-01-17 Thread ka2ajh
Thanks for the information Kevin,
I have some factory made 5 watt, 3dB attenuators. If your custom made 10 watt
amp was turned down to five watts and the attenuator was used I could get my
2.5watts for the one PA and my 5-10 watts without the attenuator for the other.
Do you see any problem using the attenuator with your PA so I could drive the
lower power input PA if I needed?
What does Repeater Builder (the business) get for the Custom 10 watt amp?

Thanks JIM KA2AJH

Hello to Kevin and the group.
Still another amplifier question: In my case I have a great Micor
Repeater and I have a need to increase the output of the exciter to
either 3-5 watts or 5-10 watts to drive some commercial amplifiers
that operate in that INPUT range. I am wondering what is the best
way to get that kind of drive, from the existing 400-500 Mw Drive I
 have from the Micor Exciter.

Have Repeater Builder (the company) build you a custom 2 to 10 watt IPA.
 (Intermediate Power Amplifier)
Since you said the exciter is putting out 400 mW, I'm assuming you need
one for 2M or High-Band, but maybe you mean something else.

Here are some pictures of a 10 watt 2 meter unit that is stable and
adjustable from 5 to 12 watts. The 'secret' is in the custom wound
output transformer. Also note the metering shunt that enables the
original metering socket to work. I also build a similar version with
only one transistor that is stable from .5 to 3 watts. Mathew Quaife,
N9LV is running one of these (the prototype) and maybe he will comment
on how it is working for him.

 Let me know...

Re: [Repeater-Builder] mobile repeaters

Give this company a try. http://www.pyramidcomm.com/svr214.html
You can interface their mobile repeaters with about any radio.

Good Luck JIM

 What band?

For VHF, it would be very difficult, even if only on one channel due to
 duplexer size.

For UHF, the duplexer is doable, however, it would have to be retuned when
you change frequencies, so, not practical.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Chance of a Lifetime (kinda OT)???

2005-06-30 Thread ka2ajh
Before I built my tower I looked into a situation similiar to yours. I backed
away because of the following concerns.
The taxes on the property would have been excessive. Check to see what you
would have to pay as the new owner. I know of sites that went for 3K and the
property was NOT assessed for the selling price.
Does the tower need painting or 24 Hour lighting in lieu of painting. Do you
have to paint or put up strobe lights. If you have to light the tower which you
may if you are close to an airport or over 200' what will it cost you per month
for electric. I have heard the average is $75 per month. I kept my tower at
180' away from the airport and no paint or lights are necessary. Is there a
fence? Liability is a concern if a kid was to climb the tower. Then there is
insurance.
Not trying to discourage you but just pointing some things out that I had to
consider.
Good Luck. JIM KA2AJH

 Here's my situation.

I have been looking for a new repeater site for quite awhile. One of
my potential sites was owned and previously used by a BIG utility
company for a microwave site about 10 years ago. It has since been
abandoned and left to deteriorate. It's at about 3000 ft elevation,
with an access road about 1/2 mile long that has for the most part
eroded away to a four wheeler trail. There's still a transformer on
the pole, but no drop, and a 20x10 concrete block building with two 4
masts sticking up about 15 ft from the roofline.

Just for kicks and giggles, about a month ago I shot off an email to
the corporate website to see if I could get access. Their land agent
 called me this morning.

They want to sell it to me. At appraisal. 1 acre of mountaintop.

Am I nuts for thinking this may be the opportunity of a lifetime--if
not from a ham radio perspective, then as a business venture (site
 leasing, etc.)?

Just curious if anyone had experience with this.

 Steve, KE4MOB

[Repeater-Builder] Dayton

2005-05-13 Thread ka2ajh
 Hi Kevin:

What spaces will Repeater Builder be at this year at Dayton?
Looking forward to stopping by again this year.

The most recent instance was with a Cushcraft ARX-270 2m/440 antenna.

I tried one of these antennas first as a low profile repeater antenna,
then as a remote base antenna. I was so disappointed with it that I
took it down and threw it in the trash. Yes it was brand new. That
antenna will never bother me or anyone else again. I'm not a big fan of
Cushcraft antennas anyway, but whoever designed the ARX-270 didn't have
 a clue

Repeater Builder is currently vending a dual band antenna that works
well in duplex service. We'll have several at Dayton, with a special
 show price.
Scott and I have installed several for non critical ham repeater duty
and are very pleased with their performance so far.
