RE: [Repeater-Builder] 220 mhz repeater isolator
Tom, Check out Telewave's products. I recently put up a Hamtronics repeater on 220, and I installed a Telewave T-2230 single isolator on the transmitter primarily to protect the 18 watt PA transistor. The very basic Hamtronics PA has no protection whatsoever from high SWR or load mismatches, and it also has no power control circuitry; its power output varies directly with the supply voltage, and it is easy to toast the PA transistor. Visit Telewave here: www.telewave.com/pdf/TWDS-4011.pdf Although an isolator is good insurance against IM, it also serves to protect fragile PA transistors from an early demise. 73, Eric Lemmon WB6FLY -Original Message- From: Repeater-Builder@yahoogroups.com [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Tom Sent: Monday, March 12, 2007 5:09 PM To: Repeater-Builder@yahoogroups.com Subject: [Repeater-Builder] 220 MHz repeater isolator Anyone know a source for one please? 73s NB2A Tom

Do your really build repeaters? Converting a GE or Motorola is not building. Is it? I have done my share of Master twos and Micores but I did not build them. Just moved them into the Ham bands and maybe duplexed them but I did not build them. Motorola or GE built them. I did move a Johnson or two as well. So before you get up on that soap box that you are building a repeater think about it. You are not building a repeater you are buying an old GE or Motorola that some one else built and adding to it. Or moving it into the Ham bands. Just my two cents. Converting is not building! Very best and a good Easter week end to all. In reverse order: russ wrote: I will be away so I will not even get to see the flames from folks saying they build Motorola or GE radio's you are only kidding each outer. OH, so you going to slam to the table some BS about people that convert commercial radios to 220 or any other band isn't really 'building' a repeater, and then not stay around for the fireworks? In the end, it won't matter. russ wrote: Do your really build repeaters? Converting a GE or Motorola is not building. Is it? Motorola or GE built them. Well, if you ever built any kits from Heathkit or Hamtronics or whoever, I guess then you really didn't build them either because you bought the kit of parts from somewhere else. Since you didn't build the parts, I guess you didn't assemble it into a working unit. Just because you didn't assemble the whole radio set doesn't mean you aren't building a repeater. So before you get up on that soap box that you are building a repeater think about it. You are not building a repeater you are buying an old GE or Motorola that some one else built and adding to it. I have tried to be very objective in considering your posts, but when you tell me that I'm really not building a repeater when it takes me several days to properly convert a Motorola Micor to 222, I need to draw the line. Re: [Repeater-Builder] 220 Mhz. repeater
Well Dean since you seem to need to shout every time you post here I hope this is large enough for you to read! Building is a state of mind! Even if it means you use blocks to put it together. For an educated person as you so blatantly flaunt after your name you seem to have forgotten the basics of the English language. Let me refresh you with English 101. As stated in the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary:Webster Dictionarynaryam-Webster DictionaryMain Entry: 1build Pronunciation: 'bildFunction: verbInflected Form(s): built /'bilt/; build·ingEtymology: Middle English bilden, from Old English byldan; akin to Old English buan to dwell -- more at BOWERtransitive senses1 : to form by ordering and uniting materials by gradual means into a composite whole : CONSTRUCT2 : to cause to be constructed3 : to develop according to a systematic plan, by a definite process, or on a particular base4 : INCREASE, ENLARGEintransitive senses1 : to engage in building2 a : to progress toward a peak (as of intensity) build to a climax b : to develop in extent a crowd building- build a fire under : to stimulate to vigorous action- build into : to make an integral part of build quality into the product- build on : to use as a foundation building on past experience So based on that and other sources I could quote, Yes we build repeaters. So being that I guess that puts you in the ass category as well, albeit a so called educated one that has to flaunt alphabet soup. Re: [Repeater-Builder] 220 Mhz. repeater
What is Building? How do you define Building? I have built repeaters from several sources. 1. Using a single mobile radio and converting to full duplex. 2. Using 2 mobile radios without conversion. 3. Using 2 handheld radios without conversion and a mobile PA. 4. Using a single base station and converting to full duplex. 5. Designing equipment from scratch to put on the air I consider all of these building a repeater. The only instance that might qualify for not building it would be my Icom RP-3010 and a Standard RPT-11 which were factory built repeaters or what we call Pre-Mods in the computer overclocking industry. And some modification was still required to interface the repeaters to the controllers. Re: [Repeater-Builder] 220 Mhz. repeater
Food for thought. I have watch this group grow out of control due to ones personal view point. Hams who have the ability to modify, repair or build equipment out way the others. Each of us have are strong areas which we are good at and we leave things we dont know enough about to others that can. Therefore; buying new equipment and placing it into service is easy but how much did we learn about it, what just pushing a few buttons, maybe some type of programming and tweaking a few knobs or pots. There is a good side to having access to this old equipment that is pulled from service, hams may get to do what they what with the equipment, the equipment doesn't end up in a land fill site, and we learn something by working with the equipment and making it do better than what its intended use. To each there own, we still put something into service and it works, but the ham that can repair the equipment will out way the others who cannot when a real problem arises. Buying cheap radios can be fun to put in service but there is real satisfaction from this achievement of the term building. So whats with all the flame wars here?? We are all here to learn something from one another in this form, and personal view points should be weighed individually and should be not taken to heart.. get over it... Good morning all, We sell the Maggiore and when you team it up with an Arcom 210 controller you can't beat the audio. They work very well from what I have seen. We never get them back for repair. This is bad for us as we have a repair business. RE: [Repeater-Builder] 220 Mhz. repeater
Kevin, I say your correct here, I have never bought a "new" repeater. I fell into a great deal, a friend in the two way business GAVE me 4 new in the box Kenwood TKR-850 repeaters. Really good friend, worked for his Dad in the two way industry for a long time but till then I always built my own repeaters out of junk. That is the fun part of Ham radio. By the way, to keep the coordination on a 440 frequency I put one of the Kenwood's on-line on a temporary basis till I get time to build one out of junk. The Kenwood's are going in service on my tower as a commercial trunk system. Withthe Kenwoodnow running I still havetwo Ham repeaters built from Johnson mobile radios, they have been running for more than 7 years with no problems. I have a GE Mastr II repeater set up (almost complete) on the 2 meter frequency but as long as the Johnson's are running I can't see putting the time, what little I have, into finishing it! Re: [Repeater-Builder] 220 Mhz. repeater
Hey Kevin, I am not saying it is bad to buy older stuff. Just if you do not have the test equipment or know all the ins and outs you mite be better buying something new with a warn tee. I am real sure your converted stuff works just fine. I see lots of folks come in and out of our shop each day buying parts for all the GE and Motorola stuff but they can fix the older stuff. So yes in the long run a new repeater on 220 is not a bad idea at all. You guys can pick on Russ all you want but he has 26 Maggiore repeater on the air at last count and they all work. So I think on this one he knows the Maggiore stuff. Let us not forget his wife and father in law has dealerships for the big brand radio's and he can sure buy them at cost. Lord know we have tried to talk him into a few things over the years. Plus he can afford to buy any thing. He buys Maggiore. Why? Because they do not break down! when you have a very large on the air system like his you can't run to it ever. He does not! So you guys who say he has no idea are wrong! On 220 the Maggiore works well. Kevin your Micors I am sure works well. I have even seen the Master II's work well on 220 but if I did not have the test equipment and the know how. I would buy a new repeater. If I needed 220 that really only leaves Maggiore for a good off the shelf repeater that works day in and day out. 73, Dean Westbrook, EE,PE. Yahoo! But you are right I guess and I do not sell used stuff like you do so as I cannot speak on this I will be silent. 73 Dean Westbrook, EE,PE. Yahoo! Dean I agree with you for public safety you want new. But as an Engineer and an Amateur I have to disagree with you for Amateur use. Amateur Radio is about experimentation and building projects to the best quality you can. Unfortunately in this day and age few Hams build stuff anymore, so when I see people on this list wanting to build repeaters to a high quality level it just plain warms my heart. This is what Ham Radio is supposed to be about. Now as to the term "junk" remember what is junk to one man is gold to another. Yes we start with things like GE Mstr. II Exec's that commercial radio shops deem not fit for public safety. Their reason is usually based on the cost to repair them vs. new. As Hams we can take these and restore them back to new condition or better because were not trying to make a profit. We do it because we love to build and experiment. You are looking at it from a commercial view point not an Amateur Radio Operator view point and there is a big difference. So to those of you who like to build projects a hearty "RIGHT ON" this keeps Ham radio alive. 73, Mike/K1EG Another Ole Fart in the Radio Field. - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Repeater-Builder@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, March 24, 2005 2:48 PM Subject: Re: [Repeater-Builder] 220 Mhz. repeater Hello All, I do not know about some of the bands that are posted. Perhaps the repeater buyers would like to start a Repeater-Buyers group and leave the technical challenges to real repeater builders. Dex Yahoo! I have to agree. The ham repeaters here outperform the fire, police and med systems hands down. All with cast-off "junk." Hams are MUCH harder to please and demand better performance. My 2 meter system and my 440 system covers all of my County, something that cannot be said for the multi-thousand dollar County radio installation. I do know that with Kenwood, Kenwood Systems and Maggiore you get a two year wan tee. Also, the topic here is 220 MHz repeaters. Does Kenwood, Motorola, Midland, and Johnson build 220 MHz. ham repeaters? If not, it really doesn't matter how damn good their (wan tee) is.Kevin Custer Yahoo!
