I did an Exec II, but pulled the RX out and mounted in a separate box just 
in case.

Yes-it can be done. However, there was noticeable in-cabinet desense in 
the one a local club put together. I wasn't involved, and not sure why 
it was doing it. I think they put a MII PA on it in place of the MVP PA, 
and it was much better-at least until the Ch.2 DTV came online. 42dB of 
desense!

Joe,
I haven't done the MVP, but have converted the Exec II for a 1 MHz split 6
mtr rptr. 
Basically the same radio in trunk mount version with a bigger PA.
