Re: [Repeater-Builder] Motorola TPN1106A Pwr Supply

2004-02-12 Thread Eric Lemmon
Don,

I believe that you have an Option C28 Power Supply / Battery Charger
with the C29 "battery Protection & Alarm" option. Before you go
further, you should purchase the manual #6881104E92 from Motorola for
about $8.

The TPN1106A Power Supply differs from previous linear models in that it
is a switching power supply. It is more efficient than a linear supply,
and it produces no audible hum.

The wires you mentioned are part of the C29 option. A brown-black and a
black wire go to a normally-closed relay that shuts down the radio when
the battery voltage drops to a certain point where damage can occur.
The blue wire is an audio tone feed that connects to pin 22 on the F1 or
F1-PL control module. This causes a tone to be heard over the air when
the radio is on backup battery power.

Most of the early MICOR radios that included the battery backup option
used ten large (80 to 100 AH) nickel cadmium wet cells, and the power
supply was adjusted to 14.25 VDC in the Float position of the switch.
If lead-acid batteries were used, an internal pot had to be adjusted to
13.0 VDC in the float position. When a modern deep-cycle sealed lead
acid battery is used, the pot should be adjusted to maintain the float
voltage specified by the battery manufacturer. The equalize position
raises the voltage by about one volt, and is used only with wet-cell
nicad or lead acid batteries, but never with SLA batteries.

When you get you copy of the manual, make note of the fact that SMR-4945
changed the value of a zener diode to improve the reliability of the
TPN1106A power supply, and you probably should make that change.

These would normally go to the external low voltage drop-out
relay. The relay de-energizes if the external battery voltage
 drops below a prescribed setting.

Goes to the back plane of the control shelf mother board. A
short repeated beep is heard on the transmitter carrier when
the the AC utility power is interrupted. This serves as a
warning to the radio system users that the radio is operating
 on battery power.

Yup, supplies 13V and 9.6V power to the mother board.

Is there to keep your mind occupied whenever you visit the
radio site. (Otherwise is not used.)

The Pot is the intermittent alert tone level control.

Just keep the battery well ventilated.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Motorola TPN1106A Pwr Supply

2004-02-11 Thread Ted Maczulat
The only batteries that are safe for indoor use are sealed type batteries.
(Gel Cell)
We use 2 100AH Gel Cell batteries in the bottom of the equipment racks that
house the VE7RPA and
an service rack I have in my shop. Vented rechargable(lead/acid) batteries
emit hydrogen gas when they are being charged
and represent a significant explosion risk. These batteries must be in a
(sealed to the inside) enclosure that is vented outside.
Photos of the VE7RPA installation are at: http://ve7ku.dyndns.org/ve7rpa

The "Float - Equalize" switch shifts the regulated voltage output on the
heavy current output up and down. In the 1106 manual
the "Float" position the voltage is set at 13.0 volts and in "Equalize" the
setting is 14.0 volts. These voltages are for Lead Acid Batteries.

The Tone Pot is an alert tone for low battery voltage. It is only present
if the power supply has the "C29" option for Battery protection and Alarm.
