Backing up always-running IIS and SQL servers
Greetings, I was looking into purchasing Retrospect Server to back up our collection of NT servers, but there are two concerns. I have seen the Exchange agent which allows backup of an always running Exchange server, but I saw nothing in the way of IIS. We recently had to restore our IIS 4 server, which was quite a pain since the native IIS backup took literally hours to restore. Does there exist a tool, or is there a plan to make a tool with similar function to the Exchange server agent, but for IIS? If not, does anyone have any strategies for backing up an IIS server? The other issue was SQL. I noticed that the SQL agent was "being worked on". I was just wondering if there was any more detail released about that, like an ETA or a plan for release. Retrospect otherwise looks like an excellent product, and I'm quite pleased with the trial version I downloaded. Even if these problems can't be worked around, we'll probably purchase Retrospect for the rest of the servers. Thanks for your time and suggestions.. --Doug Clements -- -- To subscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives:http://list.working-dogs.com/lists/retro-talk/ Problems?: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Opinions about DDS4?
Hi all, Can anyone who's been using DDS-4 with a Mac for Retrospect Network backup comment about reliability and maintenance? Years ago I used to use DDS-2 (H-P) and go really fed up with tape heads that got dirty after minimal use, excessive cleaning requirements, complicated and ever-changing instructions regarding which brand tapes to use, alignment etc. So, I bought DVD-RAM instead, which after 18 months has been 100% reliable - never a media problem, never a file that couldn't be read, PERFECT. Unfortunately, DVD-RAM is just too small of an online capacity (2.6GB) and due to Retro's limitations on non-tape drives simply adding a DVD-RAM drive or two doesn't really serve to increase online capacity, if you use verification during the backup. (Also DVD-RAM's media cost is at least double than tape.) Sooo I'm back in the market for a tape drive, and my number 1 priority is reliability and maintenance requirements. Any reports from DDS-4 users greatly appreciated... -Steve -- -- To subscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives:http://list.working-dogs.com/lists/retro-talk/ Problems?: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: Opinions about DDS4?
dds-4 (and dds-3 for that matter) are much more reliable than dds-2. I've been using a Mammoth ex8900, however, and find it to be more reliable than any of the 4mm drives (faster too under most circumstances). The 8mm tapes are a little bit more expensive ($45), but easily accommodate 40-gig, and the drive mechanism costs about the same. Works with Retrospect using the advanced driver kit. - Original Message - From: "Steve Rothman" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: "retro-talk" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, July 18, 2000 6:33 PM Subject: Opinions about DDS4? Re: Opinions about DDS4?
Don't know about DDS4, but DDS3 has been great after having the same problems as you with DDS2. . . We use a Sony DDS-4 tape drive with excellent results. It is fast and reliable. Follow normal maintenance procedures and it stays "happy"...:-) -- Best Regards, Chuck Hornish, KF6YBC Narnia Information Systems, Inc.
