Idling/Loading/Preparing Times

2001-02-07 Thread Scott Dunn

Hi All,

I've been enjoying this discussion list a great deal. I've taken notice of
the discussion concerning "shoeshining" of the heads and that got me
wondering...

I checked the logs and noticed that 80-90% of the time is spent
idling/loading/preparing. Is that really necesary? Should I be doing
something different? Shoudl I be concerned about this at all?

System configuration: Retrospect running on WindowsNT 4.0, sp6a with an
Onstream DI30 tape drive. With rare exceptions, it backs up reliably every
day and I'm very pleased with it.

If I downloaded my copy of Retrospect, where would I find this guide?

Full instructions for doing an Emergency Restore start on page 114 of the
Retrospect for Windows User's Guide. You may also select "Prepare for
Emergency Restore" from the Window menu in Retrospect; this will list what
you will need to restore and allow you to print full Emergency Restore
instructions.

Searching for "Windows Restore" in our knowledgebase now also returns these
instructions, as well as several platform-specific notes.

RE: Retro Server 5 on NT 4

2001-01-31 Thread Scott Dunn

These are the kind of tips I would hope to see on the Dantz website, too.
Providing a backup solution should be more than just providing the software
and the hardware. Demonstrating effective recovery options for a variety of
situations and platforms on the website will only add value to the software
for the user.

Thanks for your response, Malcolm. I will be updating our recovery
procedures to reflect your suggestions.

RE: Retro Server 5 on NT 4

2001-01-25 Thread Scott Dunn

I know that this sounds like the long way, but isn't it possible to start
from ground zero? I mean that if I start with a clean install of NT 4.0,
then install Retrospect, then have Retrospect rebuild a catalog of the tape,
from there I could do a complete restore of the Server, right?

RE: -24007 error backing up NT server

2001-01-11 Thread Scott Dunn

I would suggest checking the logon settings for the Retrospect client
service in the Services Control Panel. Make sure that the service logs on
as THE administrator account for that machine. This will provide complete
access to the hard drive. Keep in mind that just using an account with
administrative privileges is not enough. Especially domain admin accounts.
I've tried both of those and failed. When I used the admin account for the
machine, it worked fine.

Feature Request: Format Progress

2001-01-08 Thread Scott Dunn

Hi,

I have learned that it takes up to 40 minutes to format a CD-RW and several
minutes to format a tape. When formatting media, we have that little radar
screen spinning around. This doesn't offer much information in the way of
progress. It would be nice if we had a progress screen to show how much has
been done and how long we have to wait.

Thanks.

To use
the client address, you need to have a higher license than Workgroup.  I've
tried that on a trial license issued by tech support and it still didn't
work.  Thanks, though.

  Hi
  All,

  I've
got a rather complicated problem with a Win2k system with two ethernet
  cards.  Here're the details:

  1.
Retrospect Workgroup 5.15 is installed on WinNT Server 4.0
  w/sp6a.
  2.
The Win2k client is running Retrospect client 5.15.
  3.
The Win2k client has two Ethernet cards.
  4.
The client service is set to run on the administrator account as a

  5.
The Bindlistener registry setting is set for the card on our private
network.  The other card was for the internet.
  6.
I have Wingate installed on the Win2k client for internet connection
sharing.  This is important because I had reason to believe that this
program was interfering with the operation of the Retrospect
  client.

  Now,
with one Ethernet card, this Retrospect client worked fine.  After I
installed the second client, I couldn't "see" it from the Backup Server.
I learned from the Retrospect website that Retrospect uses TCP/UDP ports 497
to communicate with clients on the network.  I ran a port scanner to see
what was happening.  The connection was refused.  >From the
client, I opened a command prompt and typed "netstat -a" to get a list of all
listening ports.  Port 497 was not listed.

  To be
sure that Wingate was not a problem, I removed it and ran my tests
  again.  No luck.

  When I
remove the second card, I was able to "see" the client from the Server
again.  Netstat reported that port 497 was listening again.  So what
was turning the port off?  Everything else seemed to work fine, as I
could browse the network with no problem.

RE: Backup Failure

2001-01-03 Thread Scott Dunn

How did you reset the script? Did you just delete it and create a new one
with a the same name?

Scott,

I had the same problem and had to reset the script. Not sure what caused
this. Also using NT servers.

Backup Failure

2001-01-03 Thread Scott Dunn

Hi,

I have Retrospect Workgroup running on a WinNT 4.0 system with sp6a. I have
been having sucessful backups for months until last weekend. I believe that
the problem has to do with the new year since I have made no changes to my
scripts.

Has anyone else seen the same problems?
