"Very soon now" Retrospect will be able to do an action before a volume is
backed
up and then another action after the volume is backed up.

You could use that feature to stop a database, do the backup, and then start
the
database back up.

I note that you specifically use the term "hosted" instead of "served".
>From this I assume you are simply using FMP in "host" mode and not FMP
Server to serve your databases.

Even for a small workgroup, FMP Server is worth the investment. One of the
nice features of FMP Server is that from a simple command procedure you can
tell FMP Server to pause, then xcopy the databases to another directory,
then tell FMP Server to resume.

Restrospect can then backup the "copy" instead of the open files.

I use the NT Scheduler to execute the script some period before Retrospect
runs.

If you are using WinNT Workstation instead of WinNT Server be a little
careful shutting down or restarting the machine. From my experience WinNT
Workstation does not stop services correctly ... has the same impact as
having FMP Server crash.

Cheers, Malcolm

You will need a program from several different vendors that scheduled
scripts are different of repeat intervals. We are using "Script
Scheduler". It seems to be working quite well.

Adam's right--St. Bernard's Open File Manager may be an option for some.
However, Open File Manager only works with Retrospect 5.0 for Windows, not
Retrospect 4.2 for Macintosh.

RE: Backing up FileMaker Pro 5 on a PC

2000-02-25 Thread Adam Cohen

Another option is to use a product called Open File Manager from St Bernard
Software (www.stbernard.com). Backs up all open files no matter what they
are. OFM assentially takes a snapshop of the open file/s then deletes the
snapshot after they are backup up. This product even can backup the NT SAM
files and an Exchange Post Office while open. It works very well and takes
little resources.

I use it with all my NT Servers. In my office we run a Filemaker 5 database
for customer tracking and billing. OFM handles it with no problem. So nice
not to worry that a database or any other file is open.

Version 6.2 of OFM does work with Retrospect.

Set up a server script in FileMaker Pro to backup the databases just before
the Retrospect backup is supposed to happen. Retro will be able to read the
backup files, since they won't be open.
