Re: [RDD] Ok, back to the Rivendell Project.
I haven't played with lots of JACK compatible compressors but I've had good results from Jamin. As pointed out by another guy on this list (James Harrison I think) its also good for crash recovery as Jamin can be set to load a profile on startup. I've not come across Omnia/Orban before so can't really comment on the comparison. Re: [RDD] SSD for Rivendell Root/Boot drives
Hi, To be honest I've messed with SSDs a little bit for unrelated purposes and they are lightning fast which makes a general desktop machine much more pleasurable to use. However I honestly don't have a slowness problem with Rivendell. Sure you might shave a few seconds from boot time but I think cost vs benefit its not really worth it. I'd be much happier just using any old random pair of SATA HDDs on a RAID1. The costs are skewed at the moment due to the flooding but generally 2 HDDs are about half the price of 2 SDDs. Obviously you get more capacity with the HDDs but I appreciate that Riv doesn't need it when you have the audio on a server. Regards, Wayne On Tue, 24 Jan 2012 20:08:06 -, Bill Putney bi...@wwpc.com wrote: We're moving to 2.1.2 (at last). I need to upgrade one of our machines to a dual core 64 bit machine and I'm thinking of other things we might do to improve things. It seems like the Rivendell client machines would be quite happy on a 60 GB drive (except for the /var/snd which lives on the server). 60 GB SSD drives are under $100 these days and I'm thinking that the reduction of heat and increase in speed might make them good choices for the client machines. They should also be quieter than even the quietest spinning drive. Reduction in the heat load in the boxes might mean that the smart fans will spin a little slower further reducing noise. I am thinking that if there isn't a downside, making the server root/boot drive an SSD too might be a good thing to do just because it might be faster and make database look ups quicker. The /var/snd volume will stay a big spinning drive RAID-5 (or Raid-Z) array of expensive enterprise class drives. Any thoughts or experiences would be appreciated. Any drives to stay away from? Any that have worked well? I saw a comment by one user that said that they had an SSD drive that was lightning fast except for the twice a day when it took 15 second to do some internal function. Clearly that's not something I want to have in the automation system. Re: [RDD] Clarify behaviour between NFS sharing and Apache2 service
Up 2012/1/16 Alessio Elmi alessio_e...@hotmail.com: Hi all, I'm trying to figure out how to setup properly two machines running RDD 2.1.2 (taken from Ubuntu binaries). We'd like to have: A) Main computer: it is responsible to play the radio, store the music... it has everything to run the complete radio station. B) Service computer: it has a daily/weekly backup of A:/var/snd into B:/backup/var/snd and mysql backup. It should be used to update music (import music, set start/talk markers and so on). Question is... Does computer B need to have write permission on A:/var/snd (via NFS) or Apache service would be enough? And how Xport service should set in Menage Host (localhost or MainComputer)? If something is not clear I will explain in details what misses... Thank you all in advance. Re: [RDD] Can Import Everything Except MP3
Probably nothing to do with your problem, but a friend of mine gave me an mp3 cd that he compiled using musicmatch on windows. When I dragged and dropped the songs into my dropbox they would not import. I opened them in Audacity and saved as mp3, dropped them again into my dropbox and they worked fine, go figure.
