Technically, networked, even if it's just a cross-over cable,
is on-line, so please clarify what it is you want to do.

I'd caution against VLANs unless you're already making use of VLANs,
from a maintainence standpoint they add a bunch of complexity, your
switches etc all have to support it, etc.

Given the low cost of dedicated networking hardware of a sufficiently
good standard for Rivendell, I'd go for dedicated switchgear over
VLANs for most studio installs. It has the advantage that a
misconfiguration won't doom you, too (either to a broken network or an
exposed network).

[RDD] Cart Select Window Not Displaying Play Controls

2015-04-08 Thread Joe Panarello
Hi;
This one has got me stumped. I am setting up a standalone Rivendell Client
from the Appliance Disk. Everything seems to be working BUT I have a strange
issue. I went into RDLogEdit to modify a log and when I clicked on Insert
Cart > Select Cart. The Select Cart window opened But there were No Play
controls just (OK and Cancel). Has anyone ever seen this?? The play controls
work on all the other apps including the base page of RDLogEdit. They just
do not show up in the Select Cart window. One thing that might help is when
I loaded the appliance disk there was no sound card present. Is there a flag
or switch to control this? I've seen this once before and it fixed itself
when I ran an upgrade to a new version of Rivendell. Unfortunately there are
no new versions to upgrade to at the moment.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

Re: [RDD] Networking

2015-04-08 Thread Lorne Tyndale
Ryan,

For starters I'd would never use a laptop as a primary on-air / audio
store / database machine. The hardware on laptops are generally not
built for this purpose. Sound cards that come with laptops are
generally no where near broadcast quality, plus the fact that it is easy
to knock a laptop around causing potential damage and failure of the
hardware, it just seems like a recipe for problems.

(admittedly I have used laptops for demo purposes, but in that case the
demo machine is never meant to become a primary system and it is
expected that on a demo there may be unexpected problems that would not
show up on production hardware)

Setting that warning aside, I'm going to guess that you may already have
Rivendell installed on the 2 computers in question, either the broadcast
appliance or something out of one of the repositories.

You'll want to share via NFS the /var/snd on the machine that stores
your audio. There is info on how to do this on the Wiki at:

http://rivendell.tryphon.org/wiki/NFS_Server_and_Client_Configuration

You'll also need to configure your MySQL server on the primary machine
for remote client access, the wiki has info at:

http://rivendell.tryphon.org/wiki/Remote_Client_Access

And you'll need to tweak your workstation's rd.conf, nfs mount, and add
a host entry for your workstation in rdadmin-->Manage hosts.

What you're looking to do is pretty straight forward and documented in
the Wiki.

You'll likely also want to set up the automation of regular backups of
the system and such, but the first step is getting things working as
you'd like them to.
