[RDD] Rivendell on CentOS 7 + XP VM Questions
Excuse the long post. I qualify this post with the comments that while I am not a total Linux beginner I am also not intermediate nor advanced in my knowledge of Linux. I have no real experience of installing and running VM stuff. I’m currently using Rivendell 2.10.3 to play on-air programming for my LPFM It runs under Ubuntu 12.04 and works well but is dated and I am thinking of updating to the latest version of Rivendell using the available CentOS 7 turnkey image and doing whatever the steps are needed to move my music and database over to the new 3.x build I'm pondering trying to move to this, but there's more :) The current Ubuntu box has a PCI mobo with a legacy M-Audio Delta 44 in it. I want to keep using this card if I shift to the new OS. I’m told the card should work under Rivendell 3.x the trick is to find ‘new’ older hardware that has a PCI card in it. I don't disagree. I can't really update the on-air box without major impact so starting over with a new box build is the better way to go. The current Ubuntu box has this legacy card plumbed into it. The card has x 2 stereo in and outs. The two stereo outs play into a mixer, the mixer stereo out is fed into a different (identical delta 44) soundcard that sits on a Win XP box. This XP box has legcay win32 bit software that takes the input of the card and encodes it to be sent via UDP to another PC running the same win32 software. It decodes the audio, processes it and feeds it to the TX. The only reason I have this XP box running at the studio end is to take the audio ex mixing desk, encode it with legacy Win32 software and then fed to the TX site. Ideally I'd like to remove the physical XP box to cut down on PCs running and chewing up power. Instead I'd change the audio chain to do the following (if I can…) Radio Playout box - running CentOS 7 and Rivendell 3.x and outputting radio music via current Delta 44 soundcard into mixing desk. - output of mixing desk back into one stereo inputs on same Delta 44 used for Playout to the mixing desk - Have a XP VM set up and running on the same CentOS 7 box as Rivendell - employ some Linux virtual audio cable software that creates an audio link to the XP VM. Guessing something like VAC or I hear of Jack mentioned etc? But unsure what and how to set this up. - the XP VM win32 bit software would see this sound card virtual audio cable from the CentOS 'parent' as a valid input to listen to. - The win 32 bit software within the VM runs as per usual and encodes and sends audio to another PC via UDP What I am wondering is ... well a bunch of things Can I run a VM running Win XP on a CentOS box? What hardware specs will I need to allow for the VM to do this? What hardware specs will I need to allow for the CentOS box to allow to run the radio playout software without issue? Importantly - is there virtual cable software out there that I can use to take sound from a soundcard in Rivendell / CentOS 7 and feed it as an input to win32 bit software running on a VM in the same physical machine that will see the audio as valid input on a soundcard? Is anyone has any experience running Win32 audio software within Linux and/or CentOS specifically I'd be interested to chat with them :) I need to stop drinking caffeinated drinks early evening :) Thanks for reading and any feedback you can offer. [RDD] Now & Next Questions
Hi all. I'm running a copy of Rivendell 2.10.3 and have been using the now & next feature successfully by running UDP data to a IP address and a UDP string of %a - %t Recently I have also wanted to create a .txt file with the same data and used the example in the wiki for the RML command line e.g. RN echo %a - %t > /home/myfm/Music/playing.txt! This seems to work most of the time. But strangely some song data does not appear in the playing.txt file at times but the file is updated and becomes 0kb. Yet when I check all the settings the prerequisites for the song(s) that cause this (and there seem to be a number of them popping up as I watch this unfold) all seem fine. I tried moving the song that generates now artist and title data to another group that was also set up to send now and next data to the active service but no joy - still an empty playing.txt file. I also tried changing the song title label but still no joy. Hmm... Any thoughts? Second question is about how I can include another command in the RML line along with the one I am currently using. What I want to do is get Rivendell to create a semaphore file like newsong.txt by doing something like RN touch /home/myfm/Music/newsong.txt! How can I run things so that both RN echo %a - %t > /home/myfm/Music/playing.txt! and RN touch /home/myfm/Music/newsong.txt! are executed each time a song is played? Is the last command line the best way to create such a semaphore? Thanks for your help. At present APRA/PPNZ don't request playlist information per their requirements for LPFM, but the clearly require the station to be in a possition to provide those reports on request - if they ask for samples in the future. The thing I disagree with, is that you're limited to $10,000 turn over before you have to do full reports under a normal broadcast license. However, the software such as Selector or Bluegum that they recommend to output their reports makes an LPFM budget of $10,000 not really practical. I can easily blow that on new hardware to upgrade to RD 2.8 branch, new transmitter, console, mast and antenna and a grand just to get the copyright license for LPFM and online. That would maybe leave enough to pay a tech to give everything a clean bill of health. The closest thing to an LPFM budget is Rivendell for it's features obviously. I've experimented with technical playout report but that doesn't appear to be enough. I need composer/author, record label, publisher and the CD spine number (catalogue) number in those outputs. So far I've made the output path \home\rduser\%y%m%d.txt but I've played audio over and over in RDAirPlay and nothing is showing up in that subdirectory. Granted I'm only on 1.7.2. [RDD] Feature Suggestion - Time & Temp Announcements
Being able to insert a command on the RDAirplay that called an appropriate time / temp audio file would be a really nice feature to have. In the case of ZaraStudio the software looks at two different text files for the numeric values to read for 'temp' or 'time' and just calls the corresponding audio file(s) to play on the on-air accordingly. I'd say there are a lot of installations reliant on just keyboard/mouse. The luxury/cost of touch screens are not an option for my setup. Drag/drop 'move' functionality would be welcome and seems strange to me not to be available. It's a great step forward Fred (and thank you for implementing it) however the ideal would be to be able to move or copy items. Can I suggest this may be achieved by allowing users to select the desired behaviour by assigning it to a left or right mouse click and drag? Other systems I have looked at have a alternating move/copy message displayed above the element being dragged so a user knows when to 'let go' of the item. [RDD] Keyboard Shortcuts
When you are in RDLibrary and have opened up a specific songs details (title, year etc.) by double clicking on a record - are there any keyboard shortcuts I can use to step between individual song records? At present I have to press escape to close out of the song details screen and then either use the arrow keys to move the selector bar up / down or click on a record using the mouse. Can you force your external scheduler to schedule the final overfill at fixed times? 59.40, 59.50 etc. In my case I use a different scheduler set to load all music (including overfill) in to a music import event that spans 00:00:00 to 58:30 and then have one soft-timed make next event thereafter at 58:30 to drop the remaining overfill. I too would support options for larger resolutions - as you say many of us have moved to LCD displays that easily support higher default resoulutions. Hi Gavin, Yes there are three TP-Link Gigabit switches in the setup. The router is a 2wire Telecom business model – not sure it has a built in switch in it. I have found sometimes if I tell Ubuntu to disconnect from the network then reconnect it can (sometimes) kill the crazy activity but other times upon reconnection the activity recommences more often than not. Hi all, I've noticed a jump in my LAN activity and router traffic when I run any of the modules such as RDAdmin, RDLibrary, RDLogedit, RDLogmanager I can see the ports on my switcher and router suddenly start to flash all the time the moment I run any of these modules. It's like something behind the scenes is constantly testing to see if there is a network connection? The system has been compiled on an Ubuntu 12.04 LTS box. Any ideas what this behaviour may be, how to find out and stop it? I have noticed the Firefox browser often times out when I have this sort of activity going on and it's very frustrating. In RDLibrary the tick boxes 'show audio carts' 'show macro carts' 'show note bubbles' 'only show first 100 matches' as all selected by default on start-up Could some default behaviour settings be included in the RDAdmin > Manage Hosts > RDLibrary dialogue box allowing the user to set the default status of each tick box on startup? This would save me (an I'm sure others) from having to unselect certain tick boxes each time I start the RDLibrary module. Hi Wayne & Ruediger, Thanks for responding and for your help with scripts and instructions. For some reason it's Qt that's failing at the ./configure stage despite installing all the dependencies from Ruedigers script. The error says 'failed to find matching components of a complete Qt installation' I'm suspicious that updates I let Ubuntu do after installing the initial set of dependencies detailed in that url I posted earlier may have somehow caused my Qt problem? It's only a hunch and I'm probably wrong :-) 2 questions. 1. What do you think is the best sudo apt-get command I should invoke to clear out all of the Qt related files and reinstall what I need to get past this error? 2. [RDD] Dependencies - building from source - Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
Hi there, I've been trying (without success so far) to build Rivendell from source on a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with all the Ubuntu system updates applied before downloading the Rivendell-2.3.0.tar.gz I can't get to the point where I can 'make' things as the ./configure fails with errors. I have tried the list of dependencies at rivendell.tryphon.org/wiki/Ubuntu_BETA_ Dependencies but - no joy - and I note it's for an earlier ver of the OS Is there a complete list of dependencies that someone can post to the Rivendell wiki for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS please? I just want to be able to copy an updated 'sudo apt-get install xxx' command line to sort out what this OS needs in order to get compiling. I'm aware of Albans packages for 2.2.0 and have set up one Ubuntu box with this successfully. That said , what I really want to do though is be able to compile my own as updates are they released. If I load a music log with an macro event (has a make next command in it) timed to play at 58:30 as the last time in the hour but schedule music that may start after it (Love Is) the log ignores the fixed time nature and adds the macro into the new hour as a new item to segue to around 2 mins past. [RDD] Importing music & including timed events
How can I externally schedule timed events into a music log? Or should I be looking at an hour clock that combines a couple of events that load the external music log either side of a timed event late in the hour? Ideally I want to include a 'make next' event around 58:30 in the hour to drop any overfilled music At present I have followed Fred's wiki advice and have an hour clock with one event in it that contains an import from music setting with first/imported carts set to 'segue' The event is programmed in the hr clock to run from 00:00 to 59:59 All is good, music fills the hour but at this point no timed events... I did move the timing of the import music event back to 57:59 and added a 'make next' timed event at 58:00 followed by another 'import music' event from 58:01 to 59:59 I found when the music logs imported that if music was scheduled to start after 58:01 it was placed after the 'make next' event - not ideal. Perhaps I should have a 'make next' set early at the start of each hour (00:05) and then fill the rest of the hour with music etc? Separately (but related) I'm interested to learn more about the 'post import carts' and 'import inline traffic with the..' options in the edit event screen - I'm wondering if that could be a way forward to schedule timed events? I'd also appreciate info about the 'edit service' section where music data imports are configured. Whilst I have a music log importing I am not using 'contract #' 'event ID' or 'Annc. Type' - what are these fields and can any be used to tell Rivendell what type of event (timed) to schedule? What is the use of the 'pre import command' and 'note cart string' options?
