Actually the standalone %freebsd target that re-invokes devtool
is more likely to have bit rot than building from a cvs checkout and using
./devtool checkout
./devtool fbsd8x
which was running under buildbot's more recently than whatever
is in FreeBSD ports.

And the %fbsd8x target removes a level of recursion that is
quite tricky to explain and support imho.

No matter what:
Have it your won way!
has made RPM nearly impossible to build reliably anywhere, not otherwise.

Thanks for inquiring. I've resolved the errors and got RPM5 to install.

I resolved the problems by adding other environment variables, including  
CPPFLAGS, LDFLAGS, and LIBS, to the configure command line.
