Goat increasingly the meat of choice among some in Alabama

The Associated Press
7/18/2003, 12:28 p.m. CT
UNIONTOWN, Ala. (AP) -- He may be just a kid to most, but to Jacob Waddy
he's a future burger.
You want any fries to go with that goat?
Goat meat is fast becoming the organic, gourmet meat of choice for some
rural Alabamians and Latin, Carribean and African immigrants who have moved
to the state.
For small Black Belt farmers such as Waddy, goats may bring profit again
from their vacant farmland and offer a farming alternative for those who
couldn't afford or weren't accepted into the fraternity of catfish growers.
I would much rather raise a goat than to fool with cattle, Waddy, 61, said
from his Uniontown farm.
He can raise a cow and her calf on 1 1/2 acres of land. He can sell the calf
for about $300. On that same 1 1/2 acres, two goats will produce 10 kids and
he'll take home about $1,000 for them.
Alabama's three agricultural universities are jointly hosting the first
Black Belt Expo Saturday in Selma, where Waddy and others have been asked to
bring a few goats to show and to cook.
The Alabama Agricultural Land Grant Alliance's goal is to help Black Belt
residents develop and market their products and to show others that the
state's poorest area has much to offer, said Robert Zabawa of Tuskegee, an
organizer of the event. The alliance is composed of Tuskegee University,
Auburn University and Alabama AM University.
The expo will be held at the Innovation Center on U.S. 41, just east of
Selma, and begins at 8 a.m.
In addition to goats and goat meat, there'll be homemade syrup, specialty
food items, including rabbit, and handmade gifts and crafts.
Bonnie Holland of Goshen will be there. She preserves flowers from weddings,
funerals and other events, using an all-natural process.
But organizers expect the goat meat to be a sell-out.
Ralph Noble, co-coordinator of the animal, poultry and veterinarian science
program at Tuskegee, said that since 2000, stockyards in Alabama have sold
nearly 90,000 goats. Most are bought for their meat.
For certain immigrants, goat is a mainstay of their diets. They enjoy it,
and they buy it when they can find it.
That's why Black Belt farmers are being encouraged to add goats to their
cattle herds or grow them on their own. The hilly, grassy fields are ideal
for goats, Noble said. While dairy and angora goats have lost favor in the
state, meat goats are growing in popularity.
Waddy said he can barely keep a herd - and it's not just immigrants who
enjoy the meat. He sold out during Fourth of July to people in Perry County
and the surrounding area who bought goat for barbecues. He's already
promised 15 goats to vendors who set up during the annual footwashing
celebration that is held each September in Hale County.
I would rather have goat meat than beef, Waddy said. The only reason I
don't eat much as I used to, I've lost half my teeth.

[RollTideFan] Kobe in deep doo doo

2003-07-18 Thread Joel Perry
Jesse on Line 1.
Johnny on Lines 2 and 4.
Al on Line 3.

EAGLE, Colo. - Prosecutors have decided to charge basketball star Kobe
Bryant (search) with sexual assault, ending two weeks of speculation about
the fate of the Los Angeles Lakers' star.
The 24-year-old Bryant could be imprisoned for four years to life if
convicted on the single felony count, Eagle County District Attorney Mark
Hurlbert (search) told reporters during a Friday news conference.
Bryant's attorney, Pamela Mackey, has scheduled a news conference at 9 p.m.
EDT at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. It was not known whether Bryant
will attend.
Hurlbert, a former assistant district attorney promoted by the governor in
December, spent the last two weeks looking over results of tests from the
state crime laboratory. Both Bryant and his female accuser, a 19-year-old
hotel worker, underwent unspecified medical tests.
Sheriff Joe Hoy (search), elected in November, arrested Bryant on July 4,
even though Hurlbert hadn't made a decision by that time.
Silverman said the tension created by the arrest and subsequent media
attention made it tougher for Hurlbert to do his job.
All of this could have been going on without any public attention if the
sheriff had kept his powder dry, instead of arresting Bryant before
Hurlbert decided whether to prosecute, Silverman said.
Until now, Hurlbert's biggest decision as district attorney may have been
deciding not to prosecute a British man involved in a fatal skiing collision
on March 2.
As an assistant district attorney, Hurlbert won a second-degree murder
conviction in 2002 against Chuck Garrison, accused of killing his wife and
burying her body in his yard.
Bryant is accused of assaulting the woman on the night of June 30, soon
after he checked into the Lodge Spa at Cordillera outside Edwards. He was
in town to have knee surgery at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic in nearby Vail.
The woman, who worked at the front desk of the hotel, reported the alleged
assault the following day.
The woman is well-known in Eagle as a former high school cheerleader and
talented musician who auditioned for American Idol last year.
Bryant is a popular player in part because he has shown a dignity many fans
feel is lacking in other NBA stars. He frequently appears in television
advertising campaigns and has a multimillion-dollar contract with Nike.
He met his wife, Vanessa Laine, in April 2001 and the two were engaged while
she was still in high school. Their first child, Natalia Diamante Bryant,
was born in January.
In his only public comments on the allegation, Bryant told the Los Angeles
Times he would never do something like that.
Because of the charges, Bryant will have to return to Colorado on Aug. 6.

Just a guess, but I'm betting an envelope delivered via USPS gets more
attention than any E-mail. Regardless the destination.

You R krect. It gets microwaved in an oven before it gets filed in #13.

[RollTideFan] punish GIs who spoke out on TV

2003-07-18 Thread SAR
Fallujah, Iraq -- Morale is dipping pretty low among U.S. soldiers as they stew in
Iraq's broiling heat, get shot at by an increasingly hostile population and get
repeated orders to extend their tours of duty.
Ask any grunt standing guard on a 115-degree day what he or she thinks of the
open-ended Iraq occupation, and you'll get an earful of colorful complaints.

But going public isn't always easy, as soldiers of the Army's Second Brigade, Third
Infantry Division found out after Good Morning America aired their complaints.

The brigade's soldiers received word this week from the Pentagon that it was extending
their stay, with a vague promise to send them home by September if the security
situation allows. They've been away from home since September, and this week's
announcement was the third time their mission has been extended.

It was bad news for the division's 12,000 homesick soldiers, who were at the forefront
of the force that overthrew Saddam Hussein's government and moved into Baghdad in
early April.

On Wednesday morning, when the ABC news show reported from Fallujah, where the
division is based, the troops gave the reporters an earful. One soldier said he felt
like he'd been kicked in the guts, slapped in the face. Another demanded that
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld quit.

The retaliation from Washington was swift.

CAREERS OVER FOR SOME
It was the end of the world, said one officer Thursday. It went all the way up to
President Bush and back down again on top of us. At least six of us here will lose our
careers.

First lesson for the troops, it seemed: Don't ever talk to the media on the
record -- that is, with your name attached -- unless you're giving the sort of
chin-forward, everything's-great message the Pentagon loves to hear.

Only two days before the ABC show, similarly bitter sentiments -- with no names
attached -- were voiced in an anonymous e-mail circulating around the Internet,
allegedly from the soldiers of the Second Brigade, Third ID.

Our morale is not high or even low, the letter said. Our morale is nonexistent. We
have been told twice that we were going home, and twice we have received a 'stop'
movement to stay in Iraq.

The message, whose authenticity could not be confirmed, concluded: Our men and women
deserve to be treated like the heroes they are, not like farm animals. Our men and
women deserve to see their loved ones again and deserve to come home.

After this one-two punch, it was perhaps natural that on Thursday, the same troops and
officers who had been garrulous and outspoken in previous visits were quiet, and most
declined to speak on the record. During a visit to Fallujah, a small city about 30
miles west of Baghdad, military officials expressed intense chagrin about the bad
publicity. And they slammed the ABC reporters for focusing on the soldiers' criticism
of Rumsfeld, Bush and other officials and implying that they are unwilling to carry
out their mission.

COMPLAINTS CALLED ROUTINE
Soldiers have bitched since the beginning of time, said Capt. James Brownlee, the
public affairs officer for the Second Brigade. That's part of being a soldier. They
bitch. But what does 'bad morale' really mean? That they're not combat-ready or loyal?
Nobody here fits that definition.

The nervousness of the brass has a venerable history. It has long been a practice in
American democracy that the military do not criticize the nation's civilian leaders,
as Gen. Douglas MacArthur found out in 1951, when he criticized President Harry
Truman's Korean War strategy -- and was promptly fired.

Yet several U.S. officers said privately that troop morale is indeed low. The problem
is not the heat, said one high-ranking officer. Soldiers get used to that. The
problem is getting orders to go home, so your wife gets all psyched about it, then
getting them reversed, and then having the same process two more times.

In Baghdad, average soldiers from other Army brigades are eager to spill similar
complaints. ...
