Tide hangs cloak

Shula changes long-standing policy by closing Alabama
practices, feeling it will help preparation

07/25/03

By THOMAS MURPHY
Sports Reporter

New Alabama football coach Mike Shula hinted broadly
about it this summer and pulled the trigger on it
Thursday: Crimson Tide practices will be closed this
season.

The day after wrapping up an in-town staff retreat,
Shula issued the announcement that fans will not be
allowed to attend practice and strict regulations will
be placed on the media.

Shula's closed-practice format represents a change for
Alabama, which has typically kept its workouts open to
reporters and the public. The first-year Alabama coach,
who took over from Mike Price after the conclusion of
spring drills, felt it was necessary for his first team
to protect its schemes as much as possible before the
season opener against South Florida on Aug. 30.

"Without the advantage of spring practice, this fall
camp will be a very critical part of our preparation
for the upcoming season," Shula said in a release
issued by the sports information department. "We need
the full attention of our players and coaches."

Dennis Franchione, who led Alabama to a 17-8 record the
last two seasons, closed practices during the week of
the 2001 Auburn game and reaped a huge benefit. The
Tide installed a custom offensive package for
quarterback Andrew Zow while shielding the injury
status of Tyler Watts and surprised Auburn in a 31-7
victory at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Franchione closed
practices again last season during Auburn week, but the
Tigers logged a 17-7 upset at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Alabama media relations director Larry White pointed
out that several SEC teams, including Auburn, Florida
and LSU, have closed practices of one variety or
another. White said a more structured process will be
in place for players and coaches to be available to the
media.

"The information (the fans) need will be as available
as it has been in the past," White said. "There will be
plenty of time for photographers to do what they need
and plenty of time for reporters to talk to the players
and coaches."

Alabama players report on Aug. 4, and helmets-only
practices begin the following day. The Crimson Tide's
first full-pads practice is Aug. 9, with two-a-days
opening the next day.

In Alabama personnel news, linebacker signees Terrence
Jones of Tuscaloosa County and DeMarcus Waldrop of
Pinson Valley have each received verification that
their grades and test results have been accepted by the
NCAA Clearinghouse.

Waldrop apparently had a mix- up in where his ACT score
was sent, which his coach, Wayne Lee, said has since
been cleared up.

"He's all set and ready to go now," Lee said.

Fullback LeRon McClain of Tuscaloosa County made his
final attempt at the state exit exam on Tuesday and is
expected to receive results of his testing next week.

Meanwhile, outside linebacker Brooks Daniels has gone
home to Jasper, Fla., reportedly to attend to personal
business, during Alabama's second summer session.

Daniels, a rising senior, posted 102 and 110 tackles
the past two years to become the first player in school
history with back-to-back 100-tackle seasons. Daniels
ranks No. 13 on Alabama's career tackles chart with
226.

This was posted on the Bunker...

FYI...
Well, it seems Dean Boosinger has returned
from the National Vet Conference and has a new task. He is in search of
organizations who have "eagles for hire" and will fly them prior to the
games this season. The Pigeon Forge group ("Dollyland") charges upwards of
$10k for such, and I think the guy who flies "Challenger", the bald eagle
seen flying prior to many events including NY Yankees games, charges around
$35k if I'm not mistaken. Auburn is the only one who has flown a golden
eagle in such a manner.
Speaking of golden eagles and eagles in general, Auburn was informed (at
least verbally) in a meeting that took place in Atlanta with the regional
director of Fish & Wildlife Services that Auburn no longer has any business
having charge of an eagle...EVER. F&WS has revoked all the permits required
by federal law to maintain the birds of prey. This means that Auburn will
never, EVER have an eagle in its possession again as it stands, Auburn
friends. There is a letter that is now public record addressing the findings
in the meetings that took place. I should have a copy of it to share in the
next couple days. I will post it as soon as I get my hands on it.
I think you all should know that the Raptor Center at Auburn University was
"privately" funded by three groups who in include Woody Bartlett, Carol
Lassiter, and the Ratz family in Mobile. This means that all the salaries of
the individuals at the facility and the facility itself were funded by these
individuals. No university money was ever involved with two minor
exceptions. The university paid the medical insurance premiums just as it
does for university employees. In addition, the university pays the admin
fees for the state retirement program. The private sources of money I
mentioned are all withdrawing their donations because of what has
transpired, and Dean Boosinger and his cronies are to blame.
In summation, Auburn is looking to continue the "tradition" by paying for a
"hired" eagle out of university funds, and if you do the math, that's around
$70,000 for this season assuming that it costs Auburn $10k per game. Does
Auburn have the money to throw away in such a manner? Personally, I don't
think it's a wise idea no matter how much I like the pre-game flight. What's
more important to me is that Auburn no longer has the PRIVELEGE of housing
an eagle...EVER. Things may change well down the road, but that's the way it
is right now.
Speaking of the eagles themselves, Tiger weighed around 3800 grams the last
I heard. Her flying weight, which is light for her anyway, is around 4400
grams. Her bumblefoot is as bad as it has ever been now that Jill Heatley
has charge of her. It was well under control after they took her out of that
aviary. Stirling (Spirit) is not well even though Boosinger and Heatley have
claimed that he is fine. He is emaciated, and it's my understanding that he
will not see football season. I'm not sure about Nova who was the heir
apparent mascot. Nova is wild anyway...too wild to fly at this point not to
mention the fact that he is infected with the pathogen.
More as I get it... [...]

Spirit is probably going to die. I might mention this, too. Auburn has
been told that no birds are allowed to ENTER the raptor center. Those
birds that have repeatedly tested positive for these terminal pathogens
are to be euthanized. This includes the eagles. If any bird tests
negatively on a repeated basis then that bird is to be released into the

"behavior" is going to do nothing more than hurt our chances of EVER
having another eagle. [...]

[RollTideFan] Remember the Star wars kid?

There's more..

http://www.jedimaster.net/

The Star Wars Kid was just goofing off at school. Now he finds his private performance
downloaded by Internet users across the world.

The Star Wars Kid is a 15-year-old from Quebec known only as Ghyslain -- his parents
are keeping his last name secret to protect his identity. Back in November 2002,
Ghyslain was goofing off at a school video studio and recorded himself fighting a mock
battle with a broomstick lightsaber. Over two minutes, the video shows the lone,
overweight teenager twirling his mock lightsaber ever faster while making his own
accompanying sound effects.

Yes, we've all had our dorky, private moments, but this poor kid is living the
nightmare of having his private dorkiness projected across the world to giggling Web
users. His friends found the tape, and uploaded it to KaZaA as a joke on April 19.
Within two weeks, someone had added full Star Wars special effects and noises to the
tape, and the video was linked on gaming, technology, and Star Wars-related sites
across the Internet.

Currently There Are 38 Clone Videos.
3 more in the making! [...]

[RollTideFan] Mike Shula is going to call the plays.

2003-07-25 Thread kr10
http://www.al.com/sports/birminghamnews/kscarbinsky.ssf?/xml/story.ssf/html_standard.xsl?/base/sports/1059137411236991.xml

Who's boss? Shula sends clear signal

07/25/03

TUSCALOOSA -- Listen. Do you want to know a secret? Do you promise not to tell?
Closer. Let me whisper in your ear. Say the words you long to hear.

Mike Shula is going to call the plays.

That's right. The Alabama head football coach is going to cut out the middle man. He's
going to follow in the footsteps and headsets of former head coaches and play-callers
Ray Perkins and Dennis Franchione.

There will be no scapegoating of the coordinator if the offense fails to complete a
pass during the homecoming game.

The cross-buck stops here.

This means Shula will have to wear a headset on the sidelines at all times. And not
just to keep his ears warm.

This information is not a security breach. It is not a tip from a federal prosecutor
in Memphis. It is not part of a sworn statement from the friend of a friend of a rival
booster whose Internet handle is Tennstud.

This news comes from a reliable source: Mike Shula.

"I'm leaning towards me doing it," he said Thursday afternoon in his office in the
football building. Practices closed, eyes wide open.

Why would a first-year head coach take on the added responsibility of matching
play-by-play wits with the opposing defensive coordinator?

"It's just, you're in charge," he said. "I've always loved calling plays. The first
time I called them was in high school."

And then he came to play at Alabama for Perkins. And then Shula didn't call so many
plays.

Shula was surprised to learn that Perkins let offensive coordinator George Henshaw
call the plays during that staff's first season. The next year, Perkins took over that
responsibility.

"They never really told us (who was calling the plays)," Shula said. "I just assumed
it was Perk doing it. Knowing Perk."

There was no mistake while Perkins was the Alabama head coach. He was the boss.
Calling the plays just added to the feeling that he was in control.

At the opposite end of the spectrum was Mike DuBose. A career defensive assistant, he
was never going to call the plays, but he opened himself up to serious criticism in
his first season as head coach for being out of the loop.

After Alabama fumbled away a needless screen pass, the lead and the 1997 Iron Bowl,
DuBose admitted he didn't know offensive coordinator Bruce Arians had called a screen
when running the ball and the clock was the smart thing to do.

Arians would lose his job. DuBose would lose a sense of command.

Shula's decision is no disrespect to Dave Rader, the offensive coordinator, whose
input Shula wants and needs. Two headsets are better than one.

There is only one head coach, though, and everything the man with the title can do to
show that he's in charge, the better.

It's refreshing to hear a football coach wants to take responsibility for his own
program. Then again, it's hard to blame a bad call on the faculty rep and the
compliance director. Kevin Scarbinsky's column appears Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and
Friday.

Hey ya'll - my daughter informed me last night that:

Just thought some of you might find that interesting. My daughter is wearing

Well you can dayum-well bet I ain't giving anybunny a home-made CD for this
Christmas season.

I can't wait to watch Christmas Vacation again this year. Dats my favorite
video that depicts the true meaning of Christmas.

"Where do you think you're going? Nobody's leaving. Nobody's walking out on
this fun, old-fashioned family Christmas. No, no! We're all in this
together. This is a full-blown, four-alarm holiday emergency here! We're
gonna press on, and we're gonna have the hap, hap, happiest Christmas since
Bing Crosby tap-danced with Danny fucking Kaye! And when Santa squeezes his
fat white ass down that chimney tonight, he's gonna find the jolliest bunch
of assholes this side of the nuthouse! "

NCAA investigator's recent visit to interview several
coaches and athletes as "routine" and says the
university is not under official investigation.

2003-07-25 Thread Steven Johnson
That was great Devonna. I have been looking through
my book Remembering Bear published in 1983 and ran
across the poem that Coach Bryant carried with him, I
know everyone has read it at one time but it is worth
repeating.

This is the beginning of a new day,
God has given me this day to use as I will,
I can waste it or use it for good,
What I do today is very important because I am
Exchanging a day of my life for it,
When tommorrow comes this day will be gone forever,
Leaving something in its place I have traded for it,
I want to be a gain, not loss- good, not evil,
Success, not failure in order that I
Shall not forget the price I paid for it.
